This is Your Brain on Porn

Looking at brain scans, it's easy to see.

The brain of a porn addict looks similar to - and perhaps even worse than - a drug addict's.

A normal brain has the topography of a beach ball... nice and smooth. In stark contrast is the Swiss-cheese-like surface of a porn addict's brain.

It's shocking and scary, but the good news is that the damage can be reversed.

To understand why this happens - and how to fix it - we need to understand just a little bit about the brain.

Who's in Charge?

The CEO of your brain is the prefrontal cortex. It is the top front portion of your brain and, though it may be smaller in size, it really runs the show.

It is responsible for good decision making, impulse control, planning, and other complex functions befitting its executive position... and it's not fully formed until the age of 25.

On the brain scans of porn addicts, the prefrontal cortex looks diminished - much like a deflated tire.

By watching porn, this person has bypassed their CEO many times to go straight to "I want to feel good."

That "feel good" portion of your brain would be your limbic system.

This is why an addict will do things they never thought they would, because their higher reasoning takes a back seat and the limbic system takes over.

Operating on Automatic: Our Limbic System

Our limbic system is housed in a lower section of the brain.

It's our survival system - where we act on impulse to jump out of the way of an oncoming train, for instance. Dodging certain death is an automatic reaction that we don't have to think about.

Because one of its purposes is to keep us alive, the limbic system can overpower the prefrontal cortex.

This is great when facing a dangerous situation.

It's not so great when it's been bypassed on a daily basis to do something our CEO would put a stop to... and watching porn fits that bill.

The Delicate Balance

Your limbic system acts as the gas pedal, while your prefrontal cortex is the brakes. Even in a normal situation, the limbic system can override the prefrontal cortex.

Dr. Ted Roberts, former Marine Fighter Pilot, pastor, and host of the Conquer Series, a cinematic DVD series that helps men break free from porn explains it this way:

"Your brain is like a Ferrari with bicycle brakes."

Watching porn repeatedly is strengthening the limbic system pathways to unhealthy behavior, ignoring your CEO in process. And like a muscle that hasn't been used, the prefrontal cortex will atrophy. This makes us even more impulsive and less "in control" of our behavior.

With a regular porn user, their ability to control their behavior has lessened considerably, and they are much more driven to act out again and again on impulse.

In a perfect storm situation for those who use porn: The limbic system is also where memories are formed and pleasure registers. So even seeing the computer or the phone used to view porn in the past can be a trigger to watch porn again.

All told, you end up with a brain that is highly overactive in some places and woefully underactive in others. Your brain isn't functioning normally.

Thankfully, there is a way to get back to normal.

This is not an excuse for those in the midst of addiction, but understanding the battle they are up against is a critical step in recovery.

Restrain or Retrain Your Brain?

Many people treat porn addiction like a willpower issue.

"Just stop watching," they'll say. Or, "All you need to do is put a porn blocker on your phone."

Unfortunately, it's not that easy.

Dr. Roberts admonishes, "Trying to defeat your addiction on your own is like trying to do brain surgery on yourself!" Don't try that at home... or anywhere else for that matter.

You really need to understand how you got here in order to get to where you want to be.

You can retrain your brain to healthy, God-intended sexuality. Freedom from porn can be found with a reprogramming of the limbic system.

It's a process, but it works.

"Prior to 1990, we were under the assumption that the brain never changed," Dr. Roberts reveals in the Conquer Series. "You were born with a certain number of neurons, you died with those neurons. Then we discovered neurogenesis."

Neurogenesis tells us that the brain is constantly changing. It's continually making new connections, giving birth to new neurons on a moment-by-moment basis.

What this mean is, just as your brain "molded" in response to pornography, it can "re-mold" in response to healthy sexuality.

He must be saved from the guilt and penalty of sin before he can proclaim the plentitude of God's forgiveness to the chief of sinners. He must know the Gospel as the power of God unto salvation from the dominion of sin in his own heart. He must be anticipating the consummation of God's purpose in the redemption of the body. As the helmet glistens in the sunshine, so must the crown of the Christian's experience point upward to heaven and onward to the glory yet to be revealed. He must speak that which he knows, and declare what he has seen and heard. It is when we are experiencing the power of God's salvation that we can declare it to others, with a freedom and a power that needs no further corroboration. And it is when men see the salvation of God exemplified in our own life and character, that they will be prepared to accept it as indeed the Word of God.

Reformation Theology Waning As Many Protestants Believe More Like Catholics

Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation 500 years ago in October of 1517 with the nailing of 95 theses to the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Germany. He also wrote to his bishop, Albrecht von Brandenburg to question the sale of indulgences, and for his protest he was excommunicated.

Since that time, Protestants and Catholics have found themselves enemies in countless conflicts, religious wars and fierce nationalistic struggles throughout the Western world.

But two new surveys from the Pew Research Center show signs that this is changing as the beliefs of the majority of protestants have reverted toward Catholic doctrine once again.

The Pew Center conducted telephone interviews with 24,599 Christians across 15 European countries between April and August of 2017 and with 5,198 panelists in the United States between May and August.

The Pew studies examined the two questions of faith central to the Protestant Reformation: sola fide and sola scriptura. Sola fide is the belief that Christians are granted salvation through faith alone and represents a break with the Catholic Church's position that salvation requires a combination of faith and good works.

Sola scriptura is the Protestant doctrine that the Bible represents an infallible totality of all one needs to know about God's will for man on Earth which contrasts with the Catholic belief that Church tradition and official edicts should also be followed.

Protestants taught that a person can reach Heaven by God's grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ's perfect merits alone, based on what is written in the Bible alone; whereas Rome added to the requirements of salvation numerous traditions, such as praying to Mary and dead saints, repeating the rosary, confessing sins to priests, performing works of penance, paying money to release one's dead relatives from the flames of purgatory and, above all, belief in the supreme authority of "the Pope" as the successor of St. Peter as the universal head of Christianity.

Rome also added the practice of selling "indulgences" which was a payment to the Catholic Church that purchased an exemption from punishment for some types of sins.

"Yes, these traditions aren't mentioned in the Bible specifically," popes and priests admitted, "but they come from the Holy Spirit working through God's Church." "Sorry," countered Protestants, "we don't buy it. We'll stick with Scripture, not man-made teaching."

In the 1500s, these issues divided Christendom.

Since these two elements of doctrine represent a central point of schism between the Catholic Church and all the Protestant denominations that were to follow, it would stand to reason that Protestants should be in wide agreement today that man is saved by faith alone and that the Bible is the lone and absolute authority for God's will on Earth.

But that is no longer the case. The results of the survey, though not uniform between Western Europe and the United States, show a narrowing between Protestant and Catholic beliefs as expressed by thousands of practicing Christians.

In the United States, 52% of Protestants responded that they can enter Heaven through both good deeds and faith (the Catholic position), contradicting the reformation doctrine of sola fide that approximately 46% of US Protestants hold.

Just under half of US protestants also hold with the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura with again 52% saying that Christians need to live their lives according to church tradition and the guidance of Rome, the Catholic position.

The Pew Center's survey is even more startling in that a mere 30% of Protestants believe in both sola fide and sola scriptura, putting 70% of the Protestant population much closer to the Catholic position on two key aspects of Christian doctrine.

Among US Protestants, there were some divisions along racial lines with 67% of white Evangelicals holding a belief in sola fide whereas only 37% of white mainline Protestants and 29% of black Protestants are in agreement.

Although there have been many attempts in recent years to find common ground between the two groups, the fact is that the differences remain, and they are just as important today as they were at the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

Right-wing coalition passes law allowing Jerusalem to be divided
A law ostensibly meant to make it harder to cede parts of Jerusalem to a foreign entity, which has a glaring loophole that allows Jerusalem to be divided, passed in a final vote in the Knesset overnight Monday. The amendment to Basic Law: Jerusalem, requiring a vote of 80 MKs out of 120 to give parts of the capital away, was proposed by Bayit Yehudi faction chairwoman Shuli Moalem-Refaeli with enthusiastic backing from her party leader Education Minister Naftali Bennett.

Western Wall Prayers for Rain Answered
Prayers for rain offered up by thousands of Jews at the Western Wall on Thursday had an effect as desperately needed rain fell, raising the level of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) one centimeter. Israel has suffered five dry years in a row, causing the worst drought in 40 years. The country has received just 45 percent of its multiyear average rainfall for September through November, and with only two light rainfalls in December. This dire situation has led to emergency measures, both spiritual and physical. At the behest of Chief Rabbi David Lau three weeks ago, Jews and Christians around the world began adding special prayers for rain.

Mattis: “War Is Not Over” In Iraq And Syria
Declarations of victory over ISIS by both Iraq and Syria, along with Russia, are not having an impact on US military policy in the region, according to Defense Secretary James Mattis, who insisted on Friday that “the war is not over.” Which isn’t to say that the US is determined to keep fighting a war against ISIS, as such, but rather that there’s definitely going to be a war against somebody in those countries. Mattis in particular has been keen to talk up the idea of an “ISIS 2.0” emerging in areas ISIS has been expelled from.

Geologists See 2018 As Year of Monster Quakes

WASHINGTON – Geophysicists who studied seismic activity over the past 117 years report 2018 could be shaping up as a year of monster earthquakes – especially around the equator.

Why?

The signal that causes the alarm from a historical pattern, they say, is the slowing of the Earth's rotation.

The new study, presented at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America, in Seattle, is published in Geophysical Research Letters by geologists Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana.

It tracked the incidence of magnitude 7 or greater earthquakes worldwide since 1900, revealing through recent history, such major quakes occur about 15 times per year. Yet, over the last 117 years, there have been evenly spaced intervals in which the annual total jumped to between 25 and 30.

"Major earthquakes have been well recorded for more than a century and that gives us a good record to study," said Bilham.

While the researchers caution that 117 years is a relatively short period of time in the history of the Earth, something else caught the attention of the researchers.

Quake-prone periods seem to follow by five or six years periodic slowdowns in the speed of the Earth's rotation. And one of those slowdowns occurred five or six years ago.

What causes the slowdown of the rotation?

Bilham and Bendick explain that Earth is hardly a solid sphere. Not only is the planet surrounded by a gaseous atmosphere and 70 percent covered by oceans, but even the outer core some 1,200 miles deep is composed of mostly liquid iron and nickel. In fact, another new study earlier this year suggests water equivalent to all the surface oceans lies deep beneath the crust of the Earth. All of this non-solid matter is in motion in a pattern that oscillates somewhat predictably over time, like a bucket filled with water moving about in a repeating cycle.

"The correlation between Earth's rotation and earthquake activity is strong and suggests there is going to be an increase in numbers of intense earthquakes next year," Bilham said.

How does this movement change the speed of the Earth's rotation?

The change is not dramatic. It can only be measured or recorded by atomic clocks. In fact, it only slows down the Earth's rotation by about a millisecond per day. But that is enough of a change to cause the molten core to strain outward in accordance with Isaac Newton's law that objects in motion tend to remain in motion unless acted on by some outward force.

That motion results in pressure through the rocks and plates and fault lines above the liquid mass. The researchers calculate that it takes five or six years for that energy to reach the outer layers of the planet where quakes occur.

Therefore, they surmise, five or six years after the slowdown in rotation is detected, the larger quakes occur more often.

"It is straightforward," said Bilham. "The Earth is offering us a five-year heads-up on future earthquakes."

Since the last slowdown in the Earth's rotation was seen in 2011, the pattern has already been validated in 2017 with the 7.1 quake in Mexico City Sept. 19, the 7.3 quake in Iraq and Iran Nov. 12 and the 7.0 quake off New Caledonia Nov. 19.

The study also predicts the uptick in large quakes will be seen in and around the equator, the planet's widest point, within a latitude of 30 degrees north or south. That's because the equator rotates faster – up to 1,000 mph faster – than do the poles. Therefore, they suggest, the slowdown there would be more powerful.

"The inference is clear," said Bilham. "Next year we should see a significant increase in numbers of severe earthquakes. We have had it easy this year. So far we have only had about six severe earthquakes. We could easily have 20 a year starting in 2018."

What do other scientists think of the study?

"The correlation they've found is remarkable, and deserves investigation," says Peter Molnar, a geologist also at Colorado University.

The evidence for some kind of link is compelling, says geophysicist Michael Manga of the University of California, Berkeley. "I've worked on earthquakes triggered by seasonal variation, melting snow. His correlation is much better than what I'm used to seeing."

Canada: Obsessed With Islamophobia
Jan 2nd

The current government seems not to believe that Islamic terrorism in Canada even exists.

In September, the Canadian parliament began its study on how to combat "Islamophobia" as decided upon in the M-103 motion. A parliamentary committee, the M-103 committee, was established for that very purpose.

Although motion M-103 was not binding, Samer Majzoub, a Muslim Brotherhood affiliate of the Canadian Muslim Forum, tellingly advertised:

"Now that Islamophobia has been condemned, this is not the end, but rather the beginning... so that condemnation is followed by comprehensive policies."

Majzoub's statement presumably meant that the next steps would be to make M-103 binding.

Part of the problem, however, with any study of "Islamophobia", as with any motions about it, is that it is never clearly defined.

Now fresh statistics released at the end of November 2017, showed that in Canada, hate crimes against Muslims actually fell in 2016, but those against Jews increased:

Hate crimes against Muslims:

2015, there were 159

2016, there were 139

Hate crimes against Jews:

2015, there were 178

2016, there were 221

In Canada, with a population of 36 million people, approximately 330,000 are Jews and slightly more than 1,000,000 are Muslims.

Should not parliament, then -- if anything -- instead be studying how to combat Jew-hatred? Statistics, of course, do not mention who is behind the rise in hate crimes against Jews.

Moreover, the Canadian media is not investigating what might be causing it, or whether the regular preaching of Jew-hatred in many mosques might have something to do with it. Canadian politicians? They are too busy studying "Islamophobia".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently labelled a question about putting returning ISIS jihadists in jail from Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer, part of a pattern of "Islamophobia". (How can that be, if ISIS supposedly has "nothing to do with Islam"?)

Trudeau said that Canada needed to ensure that resources would be "in place to facilitate disengagement from violent ideologies, in particular [for] children who return from conflict zones [and] require tailored solutions... we're also there to help them to let go of that terrorist ideology."

"The Prime Minister," said Scheer during the debate, "is using a broad spectrum that includes poetry and podcasts, and all kinds of counselling and group hug sessions. When," he asked, "will the Prime Minister take the security of Canadians seriously and look for ways to put these ISIS fighters in jail?"

Trudeau's response was to accuse Scheer of Islamophobia:

"Mr. Speaker, the Conservative Party... ran an election on snitch lines against Muslims, they ran an election on Islamophobia and division, and still they play the same games, trying to scare Canadians... They play the politics of fear, and Canadians reject that."

Trudeau's own Public Safety Minister, Ralph Goodale, also appears to disagree with the policy that you can hug terrorists back into society. He recently said that the chances of turning around someone who has actively engaged in terrorist activities in a war zone were "pretty remote".

Scheer has repeatedly demanded to know how many ISIS fighters "are now being welcomed back to Canada by the prime minister with the promise of reintegration services to help them."

The government does not appear to have an answer to that, or, if it does, appears unwilling to share it. Apparently, 180 Canadians were involved in terrorist related activities overseas -- 100 of them in Turkey, Iraq or Syria -- and about 60 had returned, according to the testimony of Former Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) director Michel Coulombe before a senate committee in March 2016, citing figures from 2015.

None of those figures, however, includes the supporters of terrorist groups at home or potential jihadists who tried to leave the country but were prevented from doing so. "Every extremist prevented or deterred from traveling abroad may become an individual at home that requires ongoing investigation," Coulombe said.

Another document, produced in 2016 by Public Safety Canada, stated that among the returnees, "law enforcement agencies are investigating approximately 63 cases involving 90 individuals."

Last month, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale repeated the 2015 figures, stating that "about 60" foreign fighters returned to Canada. According to news reports, the use of that number "raised eyebrows among national security experts and sparked calls for the government to clarify how it is dealing with individuals who return from having fought with the brutal terrorist group in Iraq and Syria".

What is clear, however -- even if the Canadian government is not inclined to reveal it -- is that returned jihadists are walking around freely in Canada. It is not known how many have been charged, as the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) do not comment on individual cases.

One jihadist, Abu Huzaifa, who was repeatedly questioned after his return from Syria, where he had gone to joined ISIS in 2014, was never charged. Instead, he has been receiving counselling for the past year.

It seems the authorities do not seem to be trying particularly hard to charge returning jihadists: "In other cases, we've assessed that they're back, they're sorry, they're working to try to get their heads straight and we're relying on family members or other professionals," RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson said on the matter in March 2016.

The current government, in fact, seems not to believe that Islamic terrorism in Canada even exists. In the 2016 Public Report on the Terrorist Threat to Canada, the government acknowledged that groups such as Islamic State and Al Qaeda do in fact constitute the main terrorist threat to Canada. However, according to the Minister of Public Safety, Ralph Goodale, who wrote the foreword to the report:

"It is a serious and unfortunate reality that terrorist groups, most notably the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), use violent extremist propaganda to encourage individuals to support their cause. This group is neither Islamic nor a state..."

Unfortunately, however, its self-described "caliph," Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, received his PhD in Koranic studies from Iraq's Saddam University in 2007.The group correctly claims that everything it does is based on Islamic literature.

Similarly, the RCMP -- Canada's national law enforcement service and as such responsible for the protection of Canadians from terrorism -- published the Terrorism and Violent Extremism Awareness Guide in 2016. The purpose of the guide was to raise awareness about terrorism and to help the public better understand the early warnings of radicalization and signs of terrorist-planning activities.

The guide, however, is premised on the belief that radicalization occurs because of perceptions of "injustice" (not because of perceptions of jihad) and mainly argues that fringe groups on the far-right and the far-left constitute the terror threat against Canada. Islamic groups are not mentioned. The message is that terrorism is "diverse" and has nothing to do with Islam.

However, Public Safety Canada's list of terrorist entities contains 54 terrorist groups, 46 of which are Islamic terrorist groups. Strangely enough, none of the right-wing or left-wing groups mentioned in the

RCMP guide as the "leading extremist groups nationally and internationally" are on Public Safety Canada's list.

Canada has also made life easier for jihadists in some ways. The recently passed Bill C-6 has ensured that dual citizens will no longer lose their Canadian citizenship if convicted of terrorism, treason or espionage.

Meanwhile, the war on free speech in Canada grinds on: Ottawa Public Library cancelled the screening of "Killing Europe," a documentary about, ironically, among other things, the death of free speech in Europe.

The film featured interviews with, among others, Lars Hedegaard, Lars Vilks, a former Muslim Somali activist and many others, but the Ottawa Public Library deemed this content not suitable for Canadians -- apparently snowflakes not allowed to know about the rise of migrant rape crime, anti-Semitism, far-leftist violence and other irritants in Europe.

Catherine McKenney, a library board member, said she "wholeheartedly" supported the library's decision to cancel the screening and promised "better discussion in the future about what the library chooses to allow".

In September, a man who had written, "No More Muslims" on Durham Region Transit shelters was sentenced to five months in jail. Whether his message was genocidal, or merely an expression of not wanting more Muslims to enter Canada, is unclear. The judge said:

"Mr. Porco's message left black marks on a public bench but even after the words are scrubbed away with a guilty plea, it leaves stains that may be more permanent... Mr. Porco's message was both hateful and hurtful to the community and needs to be deterred."

While worried about graffiti, Canadian authorities appear far less concerned about deterring Canadian imams from preaching jihad, Jew-hatred and the murder of Jews to their Muslim congregations, despite Jews being approximately twelve times more likely to be targeted for hate crimes than Muslims are.

Two imams who, in 2014, in a Montreal mosque, called for the death of Jews, will not be prosecuted, due to the amount of time that has passed, Canadian authorities decided. For anti-Muslim graffiti, you go to jail for five months, but inciting an entire congregation to kill Jewish citizens does not, "for technical reasons," even merit prosecution.
