The Power of the Gospel
Sep 19th, 2020
Commentary
Henry Morris 3rd.
Categories: Bible Salvation

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)

This verse contains important information. We are told God’s power resides in the gospel, and that the purpose of this power is the salvation of both Jew and Greek. This passage is intended to incorporate spreading the gospel to all humanity and is specifically stated by the Lord Jesus: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).

Evidently, the event that takes place when one is twiceborn is nothing less than a supernatural creation by the Creator Himself (Ephesians 4:24)! There is no need for salesmanship or psychology or finesse or technique; the dunamis (power) of the Living God is transmitted, applied, and exercised as the gospel is spoken and a person listens.

• Ephesians 2:8—“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
• Romans 10:17—“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
• John 6:63—“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
• 1 Peter 1:23—“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”
• 1 Corinthians 15:3-4—“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

To be successful (not to mention obedient) to the Lord’s command, we must surely use the power of God that has been made available to us in the Scriptures.

Rising Up Betimes. 2 Chronicles 36:15

Morning Meditation

WHAT a touching and graphic phrase! How did God yearn over that sinful and rebellious city! Sending his messengers, "rising up betimes, and sending " ‑‑ like a man who has had a sleepless night of anxiety for his friend or child, and rises with the dawn to send a servant on a mission of inquiry, or a message of love. How eager God is for men's salvation!

From God's eagerness, may we not learn a lesson of anxiety for the souls of men? We do not long after them enough, or rise betimes to urge them to repent. Did we realize what heaven is, or hell, what men are missing or incurring, what our duty is, as saved ourselves, we should rise up betimes to seek their eternal interests.

But if God rises betimes to seek men, should they not do the same to seek Him? Think you not, that when Adam heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden at morning prime, he would be up and away to meet Him on the upland lawns of Paradise? Can we wonder that our Master would rise up a great while before day, to meet his Father on some unfrequented height? Let us not cling to beds of sloth when God is awaiting us; let us heed his loving remonstrance’s, that we may be saved in the overthrow of the world; and let us, like Lot, pass on the word to others enwrapped in fatal slumber around us, bidding them to escape to the mountains, before the sun rise on the earth, lest they be consumed.

It was the practice of Sir Henry Havelock, during his campaigns in India, always to have two hours for prayer and Bible study before the march. If the camp was struck at 6.00 a.m., he would rise at 4.00.

Revelation 12:5 - Exploring Revelation

We saw last week that Satan hates Christ because Christ is promised to bring about Satan's destruction, Gen. 3:15.

"And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne." verse 5.  In this one short verse we have the whole span of Satan`s attempts to take Christ's life. From the ages that Israel travailed to bring forth the child and to the time He was caught up to God's throne.

This verse also looks forward to the millenial kingdom when Christ will rule the nations with an iron hand.

When Christ was caught up to heaven that ended Satan's attempt to defeat him who is promised to destroy  him.

Satan's only hope was to destroy the people of Christ, whether it be Israel or the Church.  If Satan can destroy Israel then Christ cannot come to rule and reign over her and God's purposes and promises will fail. That is the only hope left to Satan.

Since Israel has been temporarily set aside and God is calling out a people for His name, the Church, Satan has fought with all his strength and resources to destroy the church. When the church is raptured the battle of Satan against the church will be over forever.

However at that time God will return to working with Israel, to redeem them and set up His earthly kingdom and rule over them. Then Satan's last opportunity will be ended.  Christ will have finally  manifested His triumph over His adversary the devil.

In verse 4, we see Satan standing before the woman to devour her child.  Satan did that all down the long centuries of Israel's history. A careful study of the Old Testament will reveal dozens of attempts by Satan to destroy the line of the Messiah.  At the cross Satan rejoiced in his triumph over Christ, but Christ arose from the dead to seal Satan's defeat.

Satan never knew when the child would come so he persisted  over the centuries, how Satan hates God and His Christ. We see that same hatred for Israel today as he enters the hearts of men and women to fight against Israel. We see in the suicide bomber the satanic hatred for the Jew.

Satan will never give up until He is bound in hell. Satan's greatest fury against God's people Israel is yet future. The mid tribulation period will see the greatest violence the world has ever known. Multiplied millions of tribulation saints will be slaughtered, perhaps hundreds of millions. Zechariah tells us that two-thirds of all living Jews will die at the hand of Satan and his man of sin, that could be as many as 8-10 million.

We often fail to realize that we are in a monumental warfare with Satan and his, perhaps billions of demons. The greatest tool of Satan in the last days according to Jesus in Matthew 24, is religious deception. How we need to guard against spiritual deception. We are seeing this subtle attack all around us. Bringing the world into the church, the world's music, the world's methods and entertainment. Christ is no longer the center and circumference of the church. Sometimes the church seems to go on as before but Christ is on the outside looking in and the Spirit of God has departed. The saddest thing of all is that no one understands what has happened. Spiritual deception comes from the Lord and it is in response to indifference and hardness of heart.

New Survey Shows Widespread Confusion on Basic Theology Among U.S. Evangelicals

Ligonier Ministries, along with LifeWay Research, has released its biennial State of Theology survey, which aims to "take the theological temperature of the United States to help Christians better understand today's culture and equip the church for discipleship".

The survey explores the religious and cultural beliefs of U.S. adults regarding the nature of God, authority of the Bible, salvation, or Christian political engagement, among many others.

They conducted the study every two years since 2014, and for this year edition they surveyed a representative sample of 3,002 US adults, from March 10 to 18, 2020.

Among those surveyed, 630 declared themselves professing evangelicals. According to the survey, although they "tend to express great concern for the gospel, trends in our findings reveal that many evangelicals also express erroneous views that mirror the broader U.S. population".

God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit

When asked about the doctrine of God, evangelical respondents were nearly unanimous in affirming that God is a perfect being (97%); that God is a Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (96%); and that God cares about our day-to-day decisions (87%).

However, when it comes to whether God accepts worship from all religions, evangelicals are more divided, with 42% agreeing with it and 49% answering "no".

Regarding Jesus, two-thirds of evangelicals (65%) affirmed the statement that "Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God", while 30% do not believe that Jesus is God but instead think he is simply a "great teacher", which is "very concerning" for the authors of the survey.

For the questions about the Holy Spirit, 46% of evangelicals pointed out that "the Holy Spirit is a force but is not a personal being", while 78% do not think the Spirit can instruct someone to do something that goes against Scripture.

94% evangelicals agreed that the Bible has authority

When it comes to the Bible, 98% of evangelicals believed that the biblical accounts of Jesus' resurrection are "completely accurate", and 91% affirmed that the Bible is "100% accurate in all that it teaches".

Although 94% agreed that the Bible has authority to instruct in us in what to do, 18% of evangelical respondents also believe the Bible "contains helpful accounts of ancient myths but is not literally true".

The doctrine of salvation

According to the survey, "only a minority of U.S. Evangelicals (38%) agree with the biblical doctrine that God chose the people he would save before he created the world, showing that the influence of Arminian theology remains strong in American evangelical churches".

Furthermore, it "shows a decline in the number of professing evangelicals who have an accurate understanding of the Holy Spirit's work in salvation, with only 57% affirming that the Holy Spirit gives a spiritual new birth or new life before a person has faith in Jesus Christ".

Related to the doctrine of salvation, the survey revealed that "84% of evangelicals surveyed believed that God counts a person as righteous not because of one's works but only because of one's faith in Jesus Christ and 46% affirmed that everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature".

Evangelicals in politics

This is a presidential election year in the US, and "evangelicals express strong support for the freedom of Christians to join the debate", the authors of the study underlined.

Only 16% of evangelicals said that "Christians should be silent on issues of politics". This is down from 39 percent in 2016, ahead of Trump's election.

"Widespread confusion about the Bible and the reality of who God is"

According to Chris Larson, president and CEO of Ligonier Ministries, "the 2020 State of Theology survey uncovers widespread confusion in the United States about the Bible's teaching and the reality of who God is".

"Many have observed the drift among Americans toward relativism, and this survey helps to quantify how this nation is abandoning objective truth altogether", he added.

Larson warned that "sadly, just when the church needs to be clear and bold about our triune God, the Scriptures, sin, and salvation, many evangelicals are evidently being influenced more by this cultural drift than by the Word of God".

However, "Christians have an opportunity to bring light and comfort to our troubled times by pointing to Jesus Christ and the authority and sufficiency of the Bible".

"These survey results reveal that there is much work to do. Let us pray for an awakening to our holy God and to what He has revealed about Himself and how we are to live in this world", he concluded.

In the harvest field now ripened There’s a work for all to do; Hark! the voice of God is calling, To the harvest calling you.

Little is much when God is in it! Labor not for wealth or fame. There’s a crown—and you can win it, If you go in Jesus’ Name.

In the mad rush of the broad way, In the hurry and the strife, Tell of Jesus’ love and mercy, Give to them the Word of Life.

Does the place you’re called to labor. Seem too small and little known? It is great if God is in it, And He’ll not forget His own.

Are you laid aside from service, Body worn from toil and care? You can still be in the battle, In the sacred place of prayer.

When the conflict here is ended.  And our race on earth is run, He will say, if we are faithful, “Welcome home, My child, well done!

Knowing God

“In the Beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” God brings every man and woman to that understanding. God speaks in the heart of everyone and reveals Himself to them as the creator of the all things. “Because, that which may be known of God is manifest (revealed) in them; for God hath shewed it unto them” (Romans 1:19). God places the knowledge of His existence in every human heart. Every man has an intuitive knowledge of God.

Notice one way that God reveals Himself to all men everywhere. “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). No man can say to God, I didn’t know about your existence. I didn’t understand that you created all things. I didn’t understand about your eternal power and Godhead. God says that every man is without excuse for not knowing about Him.

Every man under God’s heaven looks at the sky and at the world around him and he clearly sees and understands there is a creator God who made it all. John says of this creator God, “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John1:9).

Psalm 19:1 further reveals this truth, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

The acknowledging of the creator God does not bring salvation but it is the starting point of understanding the gospel which alone brings salvation. The gospel is the entry point into a relationship with God. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The problem is that men refuse to embrace the knowledge of God and instead turn away from it. “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened” (Romans 1:21). It is man’s sin against God that condemns him and causes him to turn away from God’s presence and reject God and in some cases even the very existence of God. Like Adam, all men refuse to allow God to tell them what they are to do.

The evolutionist has turned away from the knowledge of God’s existence. “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God…” (Psalm 14:1). It is in the heart that a man first turns away from God and not in the mind. Guilt for sin against God cries out in the heart for the denial of God. The mind then proceeds to justify that denial.

My friend, at some point in your life you have entered into an understanding that there is a sovereign God and that He created the heaven and the earth. Have you turned away from that intuitive understanding of God you once had?

God has spoken in His Word to enable men to make the transition from knowing about God to a relationship with Him. Man has lost his relationship with God through his sin and by the fact that he was born in sin and alienated from God.

God has said, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2).

Paul says that instead of a loving relationship with God, man is under the wrath of God because of his sin. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18).

All men are born estranged from God with a fallen sin nature inherited from Adam. The natural man is estranged from God and is the enemy of God with a sin nature. “Because the carnal (natural) mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be” (Romans 8:7).

The Bible tells us the good news that Christ has died to take away our sin and bring us into a wonderful relationship with God. Christ crucified for our sins is the remedy for removing the wrath of God from us because of our sins. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18).

Today God is striving with men in order to bring them into a relationship with Himself. Jesus said, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost“(Luke 19:10).

Peter said in second Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

The Lord through the Holy Spirit is seeking to draw all men to Christ for salvation. Jesus said, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32). Christ died an atoning death on the cross and He is seeking by His Spirit to draw you to Himself for salvation.

During WW 2, a US aircraft ditched in the Pacific Ocean, many of the crew drowned. Five managed to scramble onto a life raft. They drifted for twelve days in the burning sun, their skin was scorched by the burning sun and their rations were exhausted. Their lips were cracked, their tongues were swollen and they shrank into living skeletons. Two went mad and leaped overboard. Another died in the night and they rolled his body into the sea.

There were two left, when the rescue aircraft found the raft only one was alive. The survivor wept as he told of his companion’s death.

He said, “The night before you found me it rained, the raft caught a pail of fresh water. I tried to give some to my buddy; it would have saved his life. He fought me; he thought I was trying to poison him with sea water.”

My unsaved friend that is your condition, Christ died to save you and he is earnestly reaching out to you. He is offering you salvation full and free, but you think that He is trying to hurt you. You are turning away from the water of life and you will die and go to hell forever. Come to Christ in repentance and faith right now before it is forever too late.

Do not turn away from the offer of life. The Lord has said, “…My spirit shall not always strive with man…” You must choose eternal life or eternal torment. If you refuse God’s offer of salvation there will come a time when God will refuse you. Choose now, to delay or to say no is a choice.

Jesus said, “…Except you repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3).

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16)

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Galatians 2:16).

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).

There is a line that is crossed by rejecting our Lord where the call of His Spirit is lost. Have you counted the cost if your soul should be lost? Have you counted the cost?

The door of salvation is open for you to walk through it in repentance and faith.
