"And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered." Rev. 12:2

Last week we said that the woman here is Israel, it is important to establish that the woman is indeed Israel. We need to understand that this chapter has only to do with Israel. That shows that the church is out of the way, safely in heaven. This proves the premillenial rapture of the church and that God is not finished dealing with Israel.

Today we want to give three proofs that demonstrate that the woman is Israel.

FIRST - As we said last week, Genesis 37:9-10 reveals that the woman is Israel.

SECOND - The identity of the woman in verse :2 is confirmed She is  Israel who brought forth the Messiah. That Christ is born of the nation Israel is seen in Hebrews 7:14 , "For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood." Notice, The emphasis is not on Mary but on Israel. We see the same emphasis in Romans 9:4,5  "....Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ Came....."  Also in Micah 4:9,10 Israel is presented as a woman in travail of birth pangs.

Also in verse 13 and 14 the woman is persecuted, that is not Mary but the nation of Israel. In John 4:22 Jesus is united to Israel to provide salvation, "Salvation is of the Jews."

THIRD - The identity of Israel as the woman is from the tense of the verbs in this chapter. The words are "being", "travailing", "pained" in verse 2, are all in the present tense in the Greek. This emphasizes continuous action. So the nation of Israel is seen as being continuously in pain to be delivered. That is, the nation of Israel from its beginning as it longed to give birth to its deliverer.

The nation of Israel is characterized in the Old Testament as a woman, the wife of God (Isa.54:5 - Jer. 31:8).

Add to that the fact that Israel  in verse 14, is said to be given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to be preserved for 3 ½ years. Jesus confirms this time of preservation for Israel in Mat. 24.

The Church is not referred to as a woman or a wife prior to Christ's second coming, but is identified as the Virgin Bride of Christ.

To prove that the woman in chapter 12 is Israel and not the Church or Mary is to forever sound the death knell to Replacement Theology. God has chosen Israel as his people forever. Israel's sin and unbelief caused the Lord to set Her aside for a season, with promise to chasten Her and to restore Her forever. In chapter 12, the chastening program now begins to come to its climax.

Remember: This chapter is about Israel, that is the key.

SO Bildad spoke, suggesting that Job was not pure and upright, since God did not appear to deliver him. The premises from which he argued were that God always delivers and prospers pure and upright men, and that therefore, if a man were not delivered and prospered, he was proved to be neither pure nor upright. The fallacy lay in the premiss. It is not universally true that God delivers his saints from adverse circumstances, or prospers them with outward good. There have been in all ages thousands of devoted servants of God who have been destitute, afflicted, and tormented; and there are thousands of such to‑day in prisons, in hospital wards, in every condition of privation and trial; but in none of these cases can there be the least imputation on the love and righteousness of God, nor necessarily on their fidelity and goodness.

God's arrangements for us are not governed by the superficial philosophy which would make material prosperity a sign of his favor, and adversity of his displeasure. There are many considerations beside. Our privations in the outward strengthen and ripen the inward. As the outward man decays, the inward is renewed day by day. We have to learn and manifest those passive virtues which can only mature in silence and sorrow. We must be taught to be largely independent of circumstances, and to find in God Himself the springs of unfailing supply. We must learn to carry the sentence of death in ourselves, that we may not trust in ourselves, but in the living God. We have to stiffer with and for others. All these things worketh God with us to make us partakers of his holiness. But amid all our sorrows, He is always awake for us.

If you could go back to 1950, would you do it?  There would be no Internet, no cellphones and you would only be able to watch television in black and white.  But even though they lacked many of our modern conveniences, people genuinely seemed to be much happier back then. 

Families actually ate dinner together, neighbors knew and cared about one another, and being an "American" truly meant something. 

Today, we like to think that we are so much more "advanced" than they were back then, but the truth is that our society is in the process of falling apart all around us.  Could it be possible that we could learn some important lessons by looking back at how Americans lived 70 years ago?

Of course there has never been any era in our history when everything has been perfect.  But without a doubt, things are vastly different today than they were back in 1950...

In 1950, Texaco Star Theatre, The Lone Ranger and Hopalong Cassidy were some of the most popular shows that Americans watched on television.

In 2020, a Netflix film entitled "Cuties" is so trashy and so disgusting that four states have sent a letter to Netflix asking for it to be removed because it is "fodder for those with criminal imaginations, serving to normalize the view that children are sexual beings."

In 1950, television networks would not even show husbands and wives in bed together.

In 2020, "adult websites" get more traffic than Netflix, Amazon and Twitter combined.

In 1950, people would greet one another as they walked down the street.

In 2020, Americans are too enamored with their cellphones to be bothered with actual human contact.

In 1950, gum chewing and talking in class were some of the major disciplinary problems in our schools.

In 2020, kids are literally gunning down police officers in the streets.

In 1950, people would make an effort to dress up and look nice when they would go out in public.

In 2020, most of the population has become utter slobs and "People of Walmart" has become one of our most popular memes.

In 1950, the typical woman got married for the first time at age 20 and the typical man got married for the first time at age 22.

In 1950, the total U.S. national debt reached the 257 billion dollar mark for the first time in our history.

In 2020, we added 864 billion dollars to the national debt in the month of June alone.  In other words, we added over three times more to the national debt in that one month than the total amount of debt that had been accumulated from the founding of our nation all the way to 1950.

In 1950, most Americans were generally happy with their lives.

In 2020, the suicide rate is at an all-time record high, and it has been rising every single year since 2007.
