Palestinians reject Netanyahu's 'economic peace' plan
Jul 9th, 2009

Prior to the elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented his program for "economic peace," which he said would improved the quality of life for Palestinians in the West Bank. However, 100 days after having formed his coalition government, there is no practical progress on economic projects.

The main reason for this is the refusal of senior Palestinian Authority officials to cooperate with Netanyahu and Vice Premier Silvan Shalom, who has been assigned the task of promoting the "economic peace" initiative.

The ministerial committee handling the matter met again Wednesday, deciding to open the Allenby Bridge to traffic 24 hours a day to encourage Palestinian imports and exports to Jordan.

Shalom also presented a list of projects that had been delayed for years due to various bureaucratic difficulties. These include an industrial zone in Bethlehem, (funded by France), as well as one near Jenin (funded by Germany and another near Jericho (paid for by Japan). Netanyahu had instructed all ministries to further his "economic peace" efforts by getting rid of red tape.

Palestinians block progress

The committee also discussed the PA's role in blocking progress. In essence, its senior officials are boycotting their Israeli counterparts.

PA President Mahmoud Abbas refuses to meet Netanyahu, and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad will not meet with Silvan Shalom, while Palestinian officials are not permitted to meet their Israeli counterparts.

"Israel wants to promote economic peace, and I am calling for increased cooperation from the Palestinians," Shalom said during the meeting.

According to a senior political source, all contacts on economic issues with Palestinian officials are carried out through the Quartet's special envoy, Tony Blair. Even though the former British prime minister is pressing the Palestinians to meet with the Israelis, he has been unsuccessful.

"The Palestinians are concerned that if they cooperate on economic peace, Israel will be able to avoid the political process," the source said.

The Palestinian refusal to meet senior Israeli officials resulted in the cancellation of a joint conference scheduled to take place in Tokyo on the Jericho industrial zone.

It was to be attended by senior Japanese, Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian officials, but the Palestinians announced that at this stage they would not participate, saying this stemmed from the lack of progress on the peace process with Israel.

Former IMF Adviser: As Bad As Great Depression

Contrary to what many economists think, the economic crisis is the worst since the Great Depression, and the downturn has been even more severe in many other parts of the world than in the United States, said Barry Eichengreen, a former senior policy adviser at the International Monetary Fund.

The crisis has highlighted the growing importance of major emerging-market economies, such as Brazil and China, Eichengreen told Bloomberg Markets.

What’s more, the resilience and stockpiles of currency reserves of these economies will make them a “force to be reckoned with” in any debate over global finance, he said.

“This is the first time we’ve had a major global economic slowdown from which they have not suffered disproportionately,” Eichengreen said. “They have skated through as a group more successfully than the advanced countries because their fiscal policies have been stronger. And their regulation of markets has been tighter.”

EU retracts statement on settlements

An EU official's statement earlier this week that settlements are strangling the Palestinian economy and costing the EU taxpayers money by fostering PA dependency on European aid does not reflect the opinion of the European Commission and was not issued with Brussels' approval, Israel's envoy to the EU was told Wednesday.

The envoy, Ran Curiel, met Wednesday in Brussels with a senior European Commission official who distanced himself from the statement, saying it was the initiative of Roy Dickinson, the No. 2 official at the European Commissions Technical Assistance Office in east Jerusalem.

According to the Foreign Ministry, and confirmed by a senior EU diplomat, Curiel was told Dickinson acted on his own initiative, and not according to directives emanating from Brussels.

The positions articulated in the statement do not reflect the position of EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferraro-Waldner, Curiel was told. The European Commission has given instruction to take the statement off of all official EU Web sites.

Wednesday's meeting in Brussels came a day after Foreign Ministry senior deputy director-general Rafi Barak summonsed EU Ambassador Ramiro Cibrian Uzal to the ministry to protest the statement.

According to the senior European Commission official, the unauthorized statement was part of the Technical Assistance Office's attempt to raise its profile and not only deal with aid and technical issues, but also with political ones, something Jerusalem wants to prevent.

EU parliament 'has equal power' to member states

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Parliament is on a level power footing with member states in the EU's complex institutional triangle after years of being a mere afterthought for EU governments, its outgoing president has said.

Urging his successor to keep up the fight to "defend" parliament's interests, German conservative Hans-Gert Poettering on Wednesday (8 July) said: "We are very successful now as European Parliament to be as equal partners of the council."

He suggested that the parliament already has the upper hand over the commission, because it "only comes into office …once we have voted in favour."

This "institutional link" for controlling the council is missing Mr Poetterig said, but parliament should be "ambitious" to increase MEPs' powers towards member states.

Looking back to 30 years ago, when he was first elected, he noted that the assembly had "zero legislative competence" and now it is "responsible for 75 percent of legislation."

His words come as the parliament stands to gain even more law-making power if the EU's new institutional rules, the Lisbon Treaty, enters into force in the coming months.

In addition, the parliament has just thwarted member states' plans to secure a quick vote on the nomination of the next European Commission president, arguing that it should not be treated as a "rubber stamp" institution. The vote is now set to take place in September and not July.

Episcopal Bishop calls individual salvation 'heresy,' 'idolatry'

ANAHEIM, CA - Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori says it's "heresy" to believe that an individual can be saved through a sinner's prayer of repentance.

In her opening address to the church's General Conference in California, Jefferts Schori called that "the great Western heresy: that we can be saved as individuals, that any of us alone can be in right relationship with God."

The presiding bishop said that view is "caricatured in some quarters by insisting that salvation depends on reciting a specific verbal formula about Jesus."

According to Schori, it is heresy to believe that an individual's prayer can achieve a saving relationship with God. "That individualist focus is a form of idolatry, for it puts me and my words in the place that only God can occupy."

Editors Note.....It has often been the case that it is the religous leaders that oppose the truth of God. Jesus said to the religous leaders of His day. "But woe unto you scribes and phariseees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yoursellves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in" Matthew 23:13. Salvation is by grace through repentance and faith, revealed in a hundred scriptures. It is true that salvation cannot be obtained through empty words, but that does not negate the truth that God will always hear and save the sinner who cries out in repentance and faith. A thousand scriptures teach that a man or a woman can be in a right relationship with God and that individual salvation is essential for a man or woman to escape the fires of hell and dwell in God's presence for ever. The true believer is called to seperate from apostasy and to come out from such heresy.

Al Gore has compared fighting against climate change to the battle with the Nazis and Hitler

Speaking at Oxford University in England, The Former Vice President Al Gore accused governments around the world of exploiting ignorance about the dangers of global warming to avoid taking difficult decisions and compared the fight that he is leading against climate change to the fight Winston Churchill waged against Nazism in World War II in order to save civilization. Gore admitted that it was difficult to persuade the public that the threat from climate change was as urgent as that from Hitler and the Holocaust but the level of awareness must cause political leaders to feel that they must make change.

There are numerous scientists and and those who have studied weather patterns for years who totally disagree with Mr. Gore and his campaign to ward off the potential danger from global warming.

Jimmy's Prophetic Prospective on the News

To compare the fight against global warming and the horrific disaster of the Holocaust shows a man's total ignorance of the Bible and God's plan for the future.

For a number of years, the Former Vice President Al Gore has been waging a campaign to alert the world to the potential danger from the so called global warming that is supposedly happening today. Through his worldwide travels and the use of multimedia, Gore has fought the good fight for raising funds, passing legislation, and calling governments to take actions in the fight against global warming.

However, every scientist and meteorologist have not bought in totally to the Vice President's campaign. They deny there is any such thing as global warming or climate change that would be taking place now which would be out of the ordinary.

For the Vice President to compare his fight to the fight against Hitler and Nazism is a display of ignorance to God's word and its prophetic prospective for this world. The Bible rejects the potential for global warming when it states that Jesus Christ created all things in this world including the Earth and that by Him, by Jesus, are all things held together (Colossians 1:16-17). There will be ecological judgment during the Tribulation period (Revelation 8 and 16) but it is not global warming.

As for the Holocaust of Hitler's day, that was not the worst Holocaust ever. During the Tribulation, two out of every three Jews will be killed (Zechariah 13:8) and that will be the worst Holocaust to ever come upon the Jews.

Al Gore comparing his fight against global warming and the fight against Hitler and the Holocaust is indeed setting the stage for Bible prophecy to be fulfilled.
