The Last Days Apostasy

Apostasy is the turning away from the truth of God’s Word. In the letter to the Ephesians Paul warned that apostasy would grow in the church and come to a climax in the last days.

In the letters to the seven churches John outlines the progression of apostasy throughout the church age.

The head of the church has given His Church its mandate.

1 – To worship God and to glorify Christ.

2 – Win the lost to Christ.

3 – To disciple believers and teach them God’s Word.

4 – To separate from the world and to live godly in this present evil world. “Be ye Holy, for I am Holy, saith the Lord.”

Only as a church fulfils these instructions does it justify its existence.

When a church fails to conform to God’s plan and purpose, that church will have its candlestick removed and be de-commissioned. It will vanish off the scene or go on to become an arm of the apostasy that is identified as Christendom.

The process of apostasy has been unfolding throughout the church age. That process will climax in the tribulation period after the true church, the bride of Christ is raptured. It will climax in the counterfeit harlot church.

We can follow the progression of apostasy through the history of the seven churches.

Remember these are seven churches that actually existed in the first century. Their characteristics both good and bad are a warning and an exhortation to all churches and believers of the entire church age.

They also present a prophetic history of the various eras of the church age.

Ephesus was the church of the first century. It was a model church in its early days. It was all that a church should be, but something tragic happened. The church lost its first love for Christ and decline set in.

The basic element of both the believer’s and the churche’s relationship to Christ is love. Without love there is no relationship. Christianity is a love relationship with Christ.

Eventually the Lord removed their candlestick, they were de-commissioned as a church and they ceased to be a church of Christ.

That story has been repeated throughout history.

Smyrna was prophetic of the church that existed from 100-312AD. Smyrna means crushed. It was a church that was crushed by persecution. In spite of the persecution the church grew numerically and spiritually.

When a church is faithful to the doctrines of God’s Word as Smyrna was it will be despised and persecuted by the world. This is one of only two churches that the Lord had only commendation for. The other was Philadelphia.

Pergamos (312-500) was a church that gave up its pilgrim character and was thoroughly married to the world. It was the epitome of compromise that has plagued the church and lives of believers throughout the church age. It also had its candlestick removed and ceased to exist.

Thyatira The church of Thyatira (Rome) held sway in the world for 1000 years, AD 500 to 1517. During those Dark Ages, Thyatira so corrupted itself with false doctrine that the truth of the gospel was largely hidden from the world.

When Martin Luther nailed his 95 protests to the door of the Wittenberg Church, it was the beginning of the end of the absolute domination of the Roman Catholic Church over all of Christendom. Thyatira remains in the world today and will be swept into the tribulation period along with Sardis and Laodicea.

Sardis was born in the reformation that followed the decline of Thyatira. Great Biblical truths were rediscovered. Salvation by Grace through Faith alone and not of works was reaffirmed. Rome still teaches today that salvation is by works and not faith alone.

Sardis=” The escaping ones.” Multitudes escaped the darkness and tyranny of Rome.

However Sardis did not abandon all false doctrine. They still held to state churches and to infant baptism. Eventually unregenerate people filled the churches and apostasy overtook them. Sardis also had its candlestick removed and it remains in the world today as the mainline protestant state churches.

Philadelphia - Sardis came out of Thyatira as a protest against it, so Philadelphia came out of Sardis. Philadelphia returned to the fundamentals of the Biblical faith.

Fact one about Philadelphia. They were and still are a small group. They have been called the “church of the feeble few.”

Verse 8, “Thou hast a little strength.” “Strength”= The Greek word “Dunamin”= Dynamite; you are a little Dynamo.

They were and still are weak and despised in the eyes of the world but mighty with God. Little assemblies scattered across the country.

Fact two about Philadelphia. Philadelphia would continue in the world until the rapture. Revelation 3:10, “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.”

So this little remnant will continue in the world, until the rapture. It will continue in the world alongside the monolithic structures of Thyatira, Sardis and Laodicea. This great structure of apostasy will go into the tribulation period as the harlot church.

Even now they are coming together, preparing to become the harlot which will be joined together with all of the people of the entire earth.

Observe the characteristics of Philadelphia.

They loved – Philadelphia means “brotherly love.”

They loved one another. They loved Christ. They loved the lost. They were the source of the greatest missionary movement since the first century.

They loved His name. “And thou hast not denied my name,” Revelation 3:8.

They loved His appearing and were promised to be delivered from the tribulation period. They were and still are a premillennial church looking for the rapture. It is a church that never loses its first love.

They loved God’s Word – And hast kept my Word.”

In the period from about 1800 to 1950 the Philadelphian church was in the ascendency. Bible Churches, Methodist Churches, Brethren Assemblies and Fundamental Baptist Churches loved God’s Word and held to it tenaciously. They preached it and practiced it. It was the only authority of their lives. I remind you that it was one of two churches that the Lord had only commendation for.

The Philadelphian Church is still in the world today as a remnant below the world’s radar screen.

Laodicea is the last church of the church age and is the ascendant church in the world today.

The record of Laodicea is found in Revelation 3:16-20; “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and thatthe shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

Laodicea is an unregenerate church that will be spewed into the tribulation period. If you are in a New Evangelical church, you are in the Laodicean church.

In 1948, with the birth of New Evangelicalism, Philadelphia lost its predominance to the new fledgling Church of Laodicea.

Dr. Harold Ockenga said, “New Evangelicalism was born in connection with a convocation address which I Gave in Civic Auditorium in Pasadena.

While reaffirming its theological view of fundamentalism, this address repudiated its ecclesiology and its social theory. The ringing call for a repudiation of separation and the summons to social involvement received a hearty response from many evangelicals. It differed from fundamentalism in its repudiation of separation and its determination to engage in the theological dialogue of the day.”

Basically it pronounced the end of separation from the world and from apostate groups and opened the way to dialogue and fraternizing with liberals and Catholics. This totally reversed the belief and practice of Philadelphians. It reversed the clear instruction of God’s Word for the followers of Christ.

Laodicea repudiated the very things that make a church a church and therefore was stillborn and not a part of the body of Christ from the start.

The Word of God clearly describes what a Christian and a church is to be.

1 – The word church = called out ones. Called out of the world and called out from apostasy as found in the liberal churches around it. “Come out from among them and be ye separate.”

2 –The church of Christ will be hated by the world and will keep itself separate from it.

3 – It is to deny worldly and ungodly lusts.  It is called to walk the straight and narrow road. “Love not the world, if any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15). Today Laodicea is doing the opposite.

4 – By virtue of what it is, the church is the enemy of the world. And the world is the enemy of the true church.

4 – It is to go without the camp bearing the reproach of Christ.

On the basis of the above, the New Evangelical/Laodicean church is an unregenerate group.

With the declaration of Harold Ockenga in 1948 a great transition began. Something new began. Out of Philadelphia apostate Laodicea was born.

Philadelphia from that point on was no longer the dominant church. It declined in numbers but not a decline in sound doctrine. Not a decline in faithfulness to God’s Word or in its love for Christ. It did not decline in its love for the souls of men or in its missionary zeal. It did not decline in its willingness to contend for the faith. While evangelicals grew in numbers,  Philadelphian churches actually declined in numbers and continued to be a faithful few.

Philadelphia is still alive but it is now insignificant in the eyes of the world. It is also true that some churches that have been Philadelphian in character are even now departing and becoming a part of the Laodicean apostasy.

The word “evangelical” which had stood for fundamentalism in the past has now been corrupted by New Evangelicalism. New Evangelical means a different kind of evangelicalism which is not fundamentalism. Both words have lost their original meaning.

This new thing that began in 1948 was different in three ways.

FirstNew evangelicals have abandoned separation.

The New Evangelical said, “I will not practice separation from apostasy or separation from the world.

The watchword of fundamentalists

“Be not unequally yoked” - “Come out from among them” - “Be ye separate” - “Touch not the unclean thing” - “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.”

The watchword of new evangelicals

“Stay in” - “Associate” - “Infiltrate”- “Dialogue.” This is a turning away from the requirements of God’s Word for the believer and the church.

Very significant changes came into this new church.

Second New Evangelicals have espoused ecumenism

Two years after New Evangelicalism was founded ecumenical evangelism was born in the Billy Graham Evangelistic Crusades. Liberals and Catholics were full partners in evangelism with evangelicals. The wall of separation began to come down. We can’t even begin to comprehend the devastating effect this has had on the body of Christ. The ecumenical evangelism was used effectively to bring great destruction upon the church.

Third – New Evangelicals adopted a new gospel, the social gospel. The Biblical pattern is for the gospel to save and transform lives. That transformation brings benefits and blessing to all around.

The social gospel plans to better the sinner’s lot in order to attract him to the gospel. There is a world of difference. This is another gospel which is under the curse of God (Galatians 1:6-8).

The first  problem with the social gospel is that it is unbiblical. “The gospel….is the power of God unto salvation….” It is the gospel plus nothing, no social engineering and no manipulation of people. The social gospel actually hides the true gospel.

The Second problem with the social gospel, as mentioned above, is that it breaks down the walls of separation between the church and apostate liberals and Catholics.

The Third problem with the social gospel is that in befriending the sinner it removes the conviction of sin. It replaces the fact of the wrath of God against sin and tends to give wrong emphasis of God’s love which can only be experienced after salvation.

The moment New Evangelicalism came along, it brought a whole host of issues which brought Evangelicals, Liberals and Catholics together to preach the social gospel and to fight good causes.

It was the first step in bringing all religions together, which is where we are heading today.

Compromise

Today as a result of New Evangelicals’ compromise with the world, the church has now indulged in the world’s music, the world’s methods and the world’s entertainment.

All the water in the world can never sink a ship unless it gets inside the ship. Laodicea has sprung a leak and the world is in the ship and the ship has gone down. It has been de-commissioned, it has lost its candlestick and is now an arm of the apostasy.

I am old enough to remember the 1940s, the last days of the Philadelphian era. The evangelical church of that day was totally unrecognizable to the new evangelical church of the present hour.

In that day, church members did not smoke, drink, go to shows, they completely eschewed the world and all its sinful activities. They lived separated lives.

There was a Holy reverence with a sense of awe at being in the presence of God. Along with that, there was a spirit of joy and rejoicing as believers gave testimony to the great things God was doing in their lives. There was rejoicing over the salvation of souls.

All the churches used the same old hymns of the faith. There was no room for the music of the world. Believers attended all of the services of the church.  When there was a week of meetings the whole family was there each night in spite of the fact that life was much more demanding in those days. The world did not come into the home or into the church.

Today the worldly, uncommitted new evangelicals claim that those earlier Christians were legalistic and their hearts were no different than the church today.

The Bible denies that in the description it gives of the Philadelphian Church. As a witness to those days, I also deny it. Remember, Revelation describes the Philadelphians as loving God’s Word, loving God, loving their brothers and loving the lost. That is the opposite of legalism.

Church Growth Movement

After ecumenical evangelism came the church growth movement. New methods were found to fill the church that was now seeking numbers instead of purity, sound doctrine and obedience to God’s Word.

Peter Drucker was a businessman who did not claim to be a Christian. He developed secular methods of drawing crowds into the church. This was a further apostasy that abandoned the teaching of the Word of God for the methods of the world.

His methods worked and churches were filled with unsaved people.

The false gospel of easy-believe-ism gave multitudes of unregenerate people a false assurance of salvation.

Now the goal of the church and its pastors is to become as much like the world as possible in order to draw the world into the church.

Pastors and members now dress like the world; go to the same places the world goes and have become just like the world. Instead of the church capturing the world, the world captured the church.

Cool pastors trying to be trendsetters in order to be acceptable to the world are pathetic followers of whatever the world happens to be wearing, hearing or doing.

Such churches have lost their pilgrim character and have had their candlestick removed and have been de-commissioned by the Lord.

This is actually forecast of the present day church of Laodicea by the Lord Himself in Revelation 3:16, “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

The Laodicean/Evangelical church has become an arm of the Last Days great apostasy.

Contemporary Christian Music

In another move away from God’s Word, going deeper into apostasy, the New Evangelical church has introduced rock music into the sanctuary where God’s people go to worship Him. Someone has called it 7/11 music because it has seven words repeated eleven times.

The issue is not only the words but the beat. It is sensual music that gives sensual emotions. The beat appeals to the senses, not the spirit of the man. CCM appeals to the emotions no matter what the words are. I repeat; it is not of the Spirit but of the flesh.

When professing Christians sit in churches listening to rock music, they are not worshipping the God of the Bible or the Jesus of scripture. They are being drugged by the music and are having a nice, emotional religious experience.

Rock musicians have stated that rock music is the most powerful drug known to man. The listeners are emotionally moved not by the Holy but by another spirit. They are totally deceived.

One rock musician has stated, “The great strength of rock music lies in its beat. It is music which is basically sexual, un-puritan and a threat to established patterns and values.” Irwin Silber.

If you are in such a church you need to run as fast as you can to escape the deception.

Contemplative Meditation

In spite of the depth of deception above, there is yet a deeper deception now plunging new evangelicals into even deeper levels of apostasy. Many terms are used for this new spirituality; Contemplative, Eastern Mysticism, Altered State of Consciousness, New Emerging Christianity, etc. Whatever you call this new spirituality, it involves an encounter with demons who pose as a god within you.

The purpose behind it all is to bring the whole world together with a sense of oneness. We are all part of god and therefore we are all one.

The following is a quote from lighthouse Trails. “A move away from the truth of God’s Word to a mystical form of Christianity has infiltrated, to some degree, nearly all evangelical denominations. Few Bible teachers saw this coming. Now that it is underway, most do not realize it has even happened.”

Christianity has been drastically changed in such a short time.

Quotation, “The Hindu, the Catholic, the Liberal Protestant, the Evangelical, the secular person involved in Yoga or Transcendental Meditation and all others can be involved in this wonderful new spirituality.”

We see that our world is rapidly heading toward this incredible unity which will be harnessed by the coming Antichrist.”

Alice Bailey, the founder of the modern new age movement said, “The new age is upon us and we are witnessing the birth pangs of the new civilization. This is now in progress, that which is old and undesirable must go. The spirit has now gone out of the old faiths and the light is transferring itself into a new form which will manifest itself on earth as the new world religion.”

Many leaders today are unknowingly furthering Alice Bailey’s teachings and are calling for changes to so-called old-fashioned Christianity. This is a rejection of God’s Word by men who have no real understanding of God’s design and purpose for the church and the believer.

Eastern religions introduced the idea that you can relate to the god that was supposedly within you, through an altered state of consciousness that is brought on through eastern meditation.

Eastern mysticism does not believe that man is a sinner, but rather, man is ignorant of his innate divinity.

They call this mind experience an awakening. It is supposed to be an awakening to the spiritual world, not realizing that they are involved in the world of demons.

In mysticism we are told that what separates us from God is our ignorance of the fact that we have an internal divinity. Through the techniques of eastern mysticism man can connect to the oneness that is within him.

Evangelicals have discovered “contemplative” and with this new power within they can not only change themselves but they can use this new power to change the world.

The social gospel of the liberals took root in the evangelical church. The gospel of Christ morphed into the new gospel of the new spirituality.

Many are unaware of this tide that is sweeping down upon that which claims to be the church of Christ.

If Christians are not serious about the Bible they will be seriously deluded by the blanket of deception that is falling over the world.

God’s Word reveals that its truth is our only protection from deception.

The coming Antichrist will probably not be Christian, a Hindu, a Buddhist, nor an American, Jew, Russian or Italian. His title is not important. He is for all of humanity, to unite all religions, philosophies and nations.

Alice Bailey has stated, “The Christian church in its many branches can serve as a St.John the Baptist, as a voice crying in the wilderness, and as a nucleus through which world illumination may be accomplished.”

In other words the church can be captured to promote contemplative meditation. That is exactly what is happening today.

“The Christian is not to become a Hindu or a Buddhist, nor a Hindu or a Buddhist to become a Christian. But each must assimilate the spirit of the others.” (Vivekananda)

We are headed for a one world with an unusual unity.

Warning

The evangelical church been overtaken in apostasy. Paul warned about this latter day falling away in 1 Timothy 4:1, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”

“….Giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.” Seducing spirits are exactly what we find in contemplative meditation. Paul was speaking of our day. “…doctrines of devils.” That is teachings of devils and that is exactly what is going on in contemplative meditation today. Unfamiliar spirits masked as angels of light are teaching those who are meditating according to New Age practice.

Evangelical churches have apostatized and have had their candlesticks removed. They have been de-commissioned by the head of the church. Just as five churches of Revelation had their candlesticks removed.

Apostate pastors teach truth but they are apostates because of what they leave out.

The gospel message is a message of pardon. It is also a message of repentance, temperance, righteousness and separation from the world. It is also a message of self-denial and cross carrying. It is also a message of being faithful unto death. To fail to declare these things is to deny the message of Christ.

In the evangelical pulpit today you will not hear a loud and clear warning about hell. You will not hear about the signs of the times and the soon coming of Christ. You will not hear, “Be ye Holy because I am Holy, saith the Lord”

You will hear “peace and safety.” You will hear a shallow message that makes no serious demands on your life. You will hear a message that leaves you content and sleeping while the world is being deceived and going to hell.

Instead you will be exposed to attempts to cause you to conform to the world, the music of the world and the things of the world. You will not be warned about contemplative meditation.

That is apostasy.

In Revelation3:15-18 we have a message to present-day evangelicalism. “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and thatthe shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.”

New evangelical churches are apostate. New evangelical pastors are apostate.

New evangelicals cannot tell the difference from the holy and the profane. Ezekiel 22:26, “Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.”

If you are in new evangelicalism why have you allowed yourself to be deceived?

Are you a part of unregenerate Laodicea or a part of body of Christ as found in the Philadelphian Church.

To Laodicea the Lord had only condemnation and no good thing to say. To Philadelphia the Lord had only good things to say and promised blessing for them.

I am crying out to evangelicals who are deceived and blinded by apostasy to come out of it.

The Coming Global Church

Apostasy is the turning away from the truth of God’s Word. In the letter to the Ephesians Paul warned that apostasy would grow in the church and come to a climax in the last days.
