The State Department: US is suspending hundreds of millions in military and other aid to Egypt, a substantial portion of the regular annual $1.5 billion due this year, as well as the delivery of four fighter jets and other large weapons systems. Washington acted after more than 60 Muslim Brotherhood protesters were killed in clashes with military forces on the Oct. 6 anniversary of the Yom Kippur war with Israel and the announcement that deposed President Mohamad Morsi would go on trial on Nov. 4.
Congresswoman Michele Bachmann seems to think the guy on the street corner with the sign that reads “the end is near” might be on to something. The Minnesota congresswoman told Christian radio host Jan Markell “we are in God’s End Times” in an interview that aired this past weekend.
“President Obama waived a ban on arming terrorists in order to allow weapons to go to the Syrian opposition,” she said, according to an audio clip posted by Right Wing Watch. Bachmann seemed to be referring to a recent decision by the Obama administration to allow “non-lethal assistance” into Syria, which the White House specifically described as ”part of longstanding and ongoing efforts to provide life-saving chemical weapons-related assistance to people in need in Syria.”
“As of today, the United States is willingly, knowingly, intentionally sending arms to terrorists,” Bachmann added. “Now what this says to me, as I’m a believer in Jesus Christ, as I look at the End Times scripture, this says to me that the leaf is on the fig tree and we are to understand the signs of the times, which is your ministry, we are to understand where we are in God’s End Times history.”
Bachmann, though, said we shouldn’t be too worried about that.
“Rather than seeing this as a negative, Jan, we need to rejoice, ‘Maranatha Come Lord Jesus, His day is at hand,’” she continued. “And so when we see up is down and right is called wrong, when this is happening, we were told this, that these days would be as the days of Noah. We are seeing that in our time.”
The host agreed, saying “We’re privileged to live [in these times].”
Megachurch pastor Rick Warren, who often has drawn criticism in the Christian community regarding his engagement with Islam, is stirring the pot again.
This time he’s tweeted about a visit from Yusuf Islam, who was Cat Stevens before he became a radical Muslim.
On his @RickWarren account, Warren said: “Legendary Cat Stevens came by to see me today as I worked at home on a sermon.” The tweet includes an image of the two.
The statement immediately drew a reaction from Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch, who noted Stevens enthusiastically endorsed the Ayatollah Khomeini’s death fatwa against author Salman Rushdie in 1989 for insulting Islam.
“Who knew that Rick Warren and Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) were this close?” Spencer wrote. “Did they sing a few choruses of Cat’s nasheed that contains the lines, ‘I’m praying to Allah to give us victory over the kuffar?’”
The odds are pretty good that Comet ISON will survive its much-anticipated close solar approach next month, a new study suggests.
As long as ISON is a fairly typical comet — one with “normal” size, density and rotational characteristics — it probably won’t disintegrate during its upcoming flyby, which will bring the icy wanderer within just 730,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) of the sun’s surface on Nov. 28, researchers report.
That’s good news for skywatchers, for Comet ISON could potentially put on a dazzling show if it manages to weather its solar encounter. And it’s also good news for scientists, who have been planning their most intense observations of the comet for after the flyby (since ISON will be easier to see from Earth after the approach than before).
In the new study, Matthew Knight of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., and Kevin Walsh of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio conducted simulations of Comet ISON’s upcoming solar approach, then put the results in context by looking at how other “sungrazing” comets have performed during their encounters with our star.
One of the nation’s top credit-rating agencies says that the U.S. Treasury Department is likely to continue paying interest on the government’s debt even if Congress fails to lift the limit on borrowing next week, preserving the nation’s sterling AAA credit rating.
In a memo being circulated on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Moody’s Investors Service offers “answers to frequently asked questions” about the government shutdown, now in its second week, and the federal debt limit. President Obama has said that, unless Congress acts to raise the $16.7 trillion limit by next Thursday, the nation will be at risk of default.
Not so, Moody’s says in the memo dated Oct. 7.
” We believe the government would continue to pay interest and principal on its debt even in the event that the debt limit is not raised, leaving its creditworthiness intact,” the memo says. “The debt limit restricts government expenditures to the amount of its incoming revenues; it does not prohibit the government from servicing its debt. There is no direct connection between the debt limit (actually the exhaustion of the Treasury’s extraordinary measures to raise funds) and a default

Poll: Majority of Israelis believe US projecting weakness on Syria, Iran
Two thirds of Jewish Israelis believe that US president Barack Obama will fail to keep his promise to prevent Iran’s development of nuclear weapons, while only 27% believe he will succeed, according to the monthly Peace Index poll taken by the Israel Democracy Institute and Tel Aviv University, which was released Thursday.
President Barack Obama has notified Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that his administration will soon start the partial and gradual easing of economic sanctions against Iran, debkafile reports exclusively from its Washington and Jerusalem sources. The reduction would apply to “non-significant” yet “substantial” sanctions, the message said.
Israel is the only American ally to receive prior warning of this decision - and the only one to be briefed in detail of the understandings Washington has reached with Tehran, including Iran’s concessions on its nuclear program. Neither European, nor Persian Gulf leaders led by Saudi Arabia have been let in on the scale of reciprocal concessions approved by Obama and Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
These concessions will start coming to light when they are put on the table of the nuclear negotiations beginning in Geneva on Oct. 15 between Iran and the P5+1 group (five Security Council permanent members and Germany).
Meanwhile, high-ranking British, French and other European emissaries arrived in Jerusalem Thursday night. They said they were coming to discuss the latest developments on the Iranian question, but their real purpose was to discover the content of Obama’s message to the Israeli prime minister.
A high-placed American source told debkafile early Thursday: “The American-Iranian cake is already in the oven and half done.
