An about-face in American liberal newspapers’ views of the Middle East reached a new extreme Sunday with The New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman writing, “The Israeli-Palestinian peace process has become a bad play.”
Most of the largest American newspapers in the past two decades have followed the Palestinian Authority policy that eastern Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and Gaza are “occupied territories,” the dateline usually used in their articles from those areas.
However, U.S. President Barack Obama’s switch of gears from the Roadmap Plan has left his policy in quicksand, according to influential newspaper columnists. The liberal Washington Post surprised observers this past summer with a number of editorials and op-ed articles highly critical of President Obama for driving up expectations in the Arab world by demanding Jews stop all building in eastern Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.
The newspaper’s senior columnist Jackson Diehl wrote three weeks after President Obama’s “reaching out to Muslims” speech in Cairo, “How foolish it would be to squander it over a handful of Israeli apartment houses.”
Friedman, who once equated Jewish residents in Judea and Samaria with terrorists, wrote Sunday, “The Israeli-Palestinian peace process has become a bad play….This peace process movie is not going to end differently just because we keep playing the same reel. It is time for a radically new approach. And I mean radical. I mean something no U.S. administration has ever dared to do: Take down our “Peace-Processing-Is-Us” sign and just go home.”
Echoing sentiments voiced for years by nationalists in Israel and in the Diaspora, the popular columnist added, “Right now we want it more than the parties. They all have other priorities today. And by constantly injecting ourselves we’ve become their Novocain. We relieve all the political pain from the Arab and Israeli decision-makers by creating the impression in the minds of their publics that something serious is happening. “Look, the U.S. secretary of state is here…. Look, I’m doing something important! Take our picture….
“Stay out of our lives. We have our own country to fix.”
Friedman’s “radical” approach was published two days before Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is to meet with President Obama, whose administration is being blamed by many observers for the announcement by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas that he will not run for reelection in January.
His announcement came after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton publicly praised Prime Minister Netanyahu for “unprecedented” steps in reducing Jewish construction.

WASHINGTON, Nov 9 - President Barack Obama was due to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Monday amid floundering U.S. efforts to jump-start stalled Middle East peace talks.
The meeting between the two leaders is likely to anger Palestinians, who are already frustrated by what they perceive as backsliding by the Obama administration on the contentious issue of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
An Obama administration official said the president would meet Netanyahu, in Washington to address a forum of North American Jewish leaders, but offered no details about what they would discuss.
There had been doubts about whether Obama would even meet Netanyahu until Sunday afternoon, when the U.S. official confirmed Israeli media reports.
Aides to Netanyahu said the two leaders would discuss the peace process and the nuclear stand-off with Iran.
Despite the Obama administration giving high priority to restarting peace talks and dispatching envoys to the region, prospects for a meeting between the Israelis and Palestinians soon have grown ever fainter.
Obama's drive to revive the peace process faced a setback last week. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a pivotal partner in any negotiations, accused Washington of retreating from its demand for a freeze on settlements and threatened not to stand in elections in January.
Such a move could force a postponement in peace talks for months to come.
Obama has eased U.S. pressure on Israel over settlements, calling for restraint in construction where he had earlier pushed for a freeze. Palestinians say that shift in policy has killed any hope of reviving negotiations soon.

SETTLEMENTS AN OBSTACLE
Netanyahu has rebuffed Obama's call for an immediate halt to construction of settlements and said it should not be a precondition to restarting peace talks.
The settlement issue is a major obstacle in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and has opened the most serious rift in Israel's relations with the United States in a decade.
Washington says it still wants a freeze on settlement building but that it need not be a precondition for talks, as Abbas, a moderate supported by the West, is demanding.
"We are ready to talk and the Palestinians aren't. It's as simple as that," Netanyahu told reporters traveling with him to Washington on Sunday.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faced strong Arab criticism over the U.S. stance on the settlement issue during a visit to the region last week.
She insisted Washington still wanted a freeze on settlement construction but believed that resuming peace talks was the best way to curb them.
A U.S. official said the push for talks was aimed in part at seeing what Netanyahu envisioned when he offered to negotiate immediately. Thus far most of the pressure had been on Abbas to agree to talks, the official said.
Netanyahu will likely address the issue when he speaks at the forum of Jewish leaders in Washington on Monday. Obama was also due to speak there, on Tuesday, but canceled his appearance in order to attend a memorial service for soldiers killed in a mass shooting at a U.S. military base last week
Obama admits he is a Muslim, "I'm one of them...I will convey our deep appreciation of the Islamic faith which has done so much over the centuries to shape the world...a great and celebrated culture...I know civilization's debt to Islam..that carried the light of learning through so many centuries paving the way for Europe's renaissance and enlightenment....Islam is not part of the problem in combating violent extremism, its an important part of promoting peace - the enduring faith of over one billion people is so much bigger than the narrow hatred of a few...in the US, rules on charitable giving have made it harder for Muslims to fulfill their religious obligation (Caryl's note: most Muslims mandatory tithe goes towards jihad terrorist activity) ...that's why I'm committed to working with American Muslims to ensure that they can fulfill zakat (a religious obligation demanding 2.5% of annual income)...it's important for western countries to avoid impeding Muslims citizens from practicing religion as they see fit and I consider it a part of my responsibility as President of the US to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear......US has been enriched by Muslim Americans...." One American Muslim who saw fit to practice his religion was Major Nidal Malik Hasan who yesterday murdered Americans doing their duty. Others who saw fit to practice their religion were 19 Muslims who murdered 3000 innocents at 9/11 tragedy causing millions of dollars of damage. Obama overtly praises and glorifies this religion, his religion, which he campaigns for and sees it to be his duty as President to continue forging its Ummah (domination) into Christian-founded America |
U.S. Islamic street preachers declare Fort Hood victims got just deserts
A radical Muslim group was videotaped condoning the massacre at Fort Hood by Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan because it was a military target.
"America's chickens have come home to roost," shouted a representative of the group.
A website run by Revolution Muslim is also honoring Hasan, the man accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas, as an "officer and a gentleman," saying his actions should not be denounced.
The massacre, which also left more than two dozen injured, was called a "pre-emptive attack" by supporters of the group.
Hasan, a Muslim psychiatrist who reportedly had been disciplined for pushing Islam on his patients at one point in his career, had given away his furniture and handed out Qurans before going to the military post and firing on soldiers at a processing center where soldiers prepared to deploy.
There were multiple reports he had objected to being placed in the position of possibly having to fight fellow Muslims by his scheduled deployment to the Middle East.
"Get Well Soon Major Nidal We Love You," said the website run by radicals who follow an imam once jailed in Britain. "Major Nidal Hasan M.D. An officer and a gentleman was injured while partaking in a pre-emptive attack."
The website lists as its imam Sheik Abdullah el-Faisal, who in February 2003 was sentenced to nine years in jail, reduced to seven on appeal, after being convicted of soliciting murder and inciting racial hatred in England.
According to reports in the London Guardian at the time, hundreds attended his lectures, possibly including James Ujaama, a U.S. citizen accused of trying to help the Taliban in Afghanistan; Richard Reid, who attempted to detonate a bomb in his shoe while crossing the Atlantic in a jetliner; and Zacarias Moussaoui, jailed for the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the U.S.
The reports said el-Faisal, who later was released and returned to his home in Jamaica, suggested Muslims attend training camps to gain the skills to wage jihad on the West.
He was recorded praising Osama bin Laden and saying, "You have to learn how to shoot and fly planes and drive tanks."
El-Faisal also said chemical weapons should be utilized to "exterminate non-believers" and said Muslim mothers should buy toy guns for their children to providing training opportunities.
"We do NOT denounce this officer's actions, we do however apologize for the following acts committed by our country," the U.S.-based website's supporters said. They listed: "Bay of Tonkin, The East Timor Massacre by USA Supported Suharto, 1902 Samar Massacre in the Philippines by the USMC, 1,000,000 Dead Iraqis, Afghani & Pakistanis Killed by the USA, Starvation of Africa & Rape of it's (sic) Resources by the USA, Support of the Brutal 'Israeli' Occupation Entity, Etc. Etc."
"Every day is Fort Hood for the world community due to USA policies and their tyrant totalitarian puppet regimes," the activists proclaimed. "Rest assure (sic) the slain terrorists at Fort Hood are in the eternal hellfire and it is not to (sic) late for YOU to change your policies," they said.
The website's mission statement states, "Revolution Muslim is a message and movement grounded in the sayings, deeds, actions and understanding of Ahlus Sunnah wal jama'ah (The collective body of those Muslims that adhere to the ways of the Prophet (SAWS) and the first four generations of Muslims)."
It continues, "We pray that we may witness the dismantlement of western, secular dominance across the world as we hold it to be pagan and idolatrous in the majority of its presumptions. We seek a resurrection of the just example set forth by centuries of Islamic rule throughout the ages and we hold it to be self evident for the objective soul and mind that Allah is One and that Muhammad ibn Abdullah is His Prophet and that the religion offers the solution to all of the world's ills and afflictions."
The post commander said soldiers reported they heard Hasan shout "Allahu akbar," or "Allah is the greatest," while he was shooting.
The site is disdainful of other Islamic organizations, citing a condemnation from the Islamic Society of North America regarding the shootings.
"ISNA - The house dog, barks once more to please its kafir Masters," Revolution Muslim wrote.
Hasan was born and raised in Virginia, but has family outside of Jerusalem. He enlisted and obtained his education from the military. He spent most of his career at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington until he was sent to Fort Hood this year, from where he apparently was to be deployed.
SUVA, FIJI — A major but deep earthquake shook the Fiji Islands on Monday evening, according to seismologists.
The epicenter of the tremor was located about 67 miles from Fiji’s capital, Suva. No strong damage is expected as the earthquake struck about 357 miles deep, making it an extremely deep earthquake. Shallow earthquakes often tend to cause more serious damage, and increase the risk of a destructive tsunami.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the earthquake as a 7.1 magnitude.
No tsunami warnings were issued following the earthquake, which struck at 10.45 p.m. local time. “A destructive tsunami was not generated based on depth of earthquake,” a bulletin from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center read.
In interview to al-Hayat newspaper, King Abdullah warns, 'If we miss this opportunity and peace is not achieved in a year or two, I believe our generation will not see peace'
Jordan's King Abdullah II warned on Monday against the continuation of the political stalemate reached in the region. In a special interview to London-based al-Hayat newspaper, Abdullah warned that if the current situation continues, it would be "heading towards an abyss. If there is no progress, if there is no vision, I am concerned about Palestine, and about the entire region."
In the first part of the two-part interview, Abdullah urged Israel to cease its "illegitimate steps that make chances for peace tough."
He said, "Jerusalem is the red line. The Israelis must understand Jerusalem's standing among the Arabs, the Muslims and the Christians, and should not play with fire."
He also commented on statements made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who said he does not plan to run for another term in office. "He is a true partner in the peace process, and does everything he can for his people's interests in order to obtain the Palestinians' rights and peace based on two states.
"I understand how President Abbas feels, and his frustration, we hope that it will be possible to move forward with the efforts and restart negotiations based on the right principles, and that President Abbas remains in his role so that a solution that meets the ambitions of the Palestinian people can be reached."
The king added, "We all felt the frustration in light of the fact that the necessary progress was not made. I believe that Israel acted in one way or another to push Abbas and the Arabs, to stop talks from resuming so that the Arabs could say they are not interested in negotiations, allowing Israel to use this as an excuse and say there is no partner for the peace process.
"I have warned more than once that if we do not make progress towards a solution, and if there is no clear and convincing progress, the region is open to some dangerous and difficult possibilities. Maintaining the current situation is unacceptable, and is means that the region is headed towards an abyss. If we miss this opportunity and peace is not reached in a year or tow, I believe our generation will not see peace."
On construction in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Abdullah said, "If the demand is not achieved to freeze the settlements in order to commence talks, there will be a need for binding American and international guarantees in writing via the UN that will confirm that the negotiations will cover all the issues of a permanent settlement, the borders, Jerusalem and the refugees, and will lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state in the 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital, in the frame of a clear timetable."
Art's Commentary.....This is nothing less than a call for Israel's total surrender to all the PA demands. A surrender which mean nothing less than the total demise of the State of Israel.

Lieberman Wants Senate Probe of Alleged Gunman
Gold prices hit a record above 1,100 dollars on Monday with the dollar weakening after a pledge by G20 countries to keep economic recovery pumped up with easy money.
In morning trading here, gold struck an all-time peak of 1,109.50 dollars an ounce as the euro rose to 1.50 dollars for the first time in two weeks. Gold "established itself above the psychological (1,100-dollar) level this morning as ministers at the weekend G20 meeting pledged to maintain their fiscal stimulus measures," said James Moore, an analyst at TheBullionDesk.com. The governments of the world's biggest and top emerging economies said in a statement over the weekend that "recovery is uneven and remains dependent on policy support." And "to restore the global economy and financial system to health, we agreed to maintain support for the recovery until it is assured," the G20 said in a communique issued after a finance ministers' meeting in Scotland. The International Monetary Fund meanwhile said on Saturday that emergency stimulus measures must remain to avoid endangering a "nascent" economic recovery. "An overarching risk is that the recovery stalls" owing to early exits from record-low interest rates and massive state cash injections, the IMF said in a report to coincide with the G20 meeting. "Premature exit from accommodative monetary and fiscal policies could undermine the nascent rebound, as the policy-induced rebound could be mistaken for a strong and durable recovery," the IMF said. Last week, the US Federal Reserve decided to hold rock-bottom US interest rates for "an extended period" and to keep trillion-dollar stimulus measures in place to support the United States' fragile recovery from recession.
An American soldier who opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas last week killing 13 fellow soldiers and wounding 30 others is now known to be an Arab Muslim of Palestinian decent.
While Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was born and raised in the US, his parents came from the currently Palestinian-controlled areas of the so-called "West Bank."
Hasan was described as a devout Muslim who on several occasions in recent years passed out Korans and tried to share the message of Islam with other soldiers. He is also suspected of having participated in several online discussions praising the use of terrorism against America and American soldiers, despite being one himself.
It is interesting to note that while they receive more aid per capita from the US than any other people group (roughly half a billion dollars ever year), the Palestinians perhaps more than any other group in the Middle East nurture a strong hatred for the US.
For example, when Muslim terrorists devastated the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, Palestinians rejoiced en masse in the streets of their cities, and even in Jerusalem. That despite the fact that for the previous eight years former US President Bill Clinton had been pumping money into the Palestinian economy and extracting far-reaching concessions from Israel.
Speaking at Organization of Islamic Conference economic forum in Istanbul, Syrian president says if 'occupied Syrian Golan' is not returned by Israel through peaceful means, 'this automatically means resistance is the alternative solution'
Syrian President Bashar Assad warned on Monday that if the Golan Heights are not returned peacefully – Syria will turn to resistance. Speaking at an economic forum of the Organization of Islamic Conference in Istanbul, Assad said, "The failure of negotiations towards the full restoration of rights automatically means resistance is the alternative solution."
According to Assad, "Resisting the occupation is a national duty. It is our legitimate and moral obligation to support it, and it is an honor that we take pride in. This does not contradict the constant desire to achieve a just and inclusive peace on the basis of the restoration of the occupied lands, starting with the occupied Syrian Golan."
The Syrian president also criticized the international community's approach towards Israel: "The events have proven that censure lacks any real value if it are not accompanied real steps, starting with applying pressure on Israel instead of rewarding it, and ending with supporting the original Arab residents' firm position, who face the Israeli occupation with a number of means."
He also slammed Israel for the situation at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem: "We felt this danger 40 years ago, when the Israelis tried to set fire to the al-Aqsa Mosque. Today these attempts are reoccurring in the most determined way, in an attempt to finally remove the mosque. At the same time, steps are being taken to Judaize Jerusalem by expelling Palestinians from their homes and housing settlers in their place."
Assad said the activity in Jerusalem is organized and accompanied by "daily aggression, collective acts of massacre and the destruction of the infrastructure aimed at pushing the Palestinians to complete despair, to have them immigrate out of Palestine, and this is an attempt to achieve a pure Jewish state."
