_Joseph and His Brothers

Israel’s future is foreshadowed in the relationship between Joseph and his brothers, Joseph being a type of Christ and his brothers representing Israel.

Outline – Genesis 39-41

1- Joseph presents himself to his brothers as one sent from the father.

2-  His brothers reject him and put him in the pit, the place of death.

3-  God raises him up and exalts him.

4-  God gives him a bride.

5-  When his brothers are broken and prostrate before him, he blesses them.

6-  He becomes the channel of blessing to them and to the whole world.

In Joseph’s experience with his brothers we have insights into the latter day experiences of Israel. During the time that Joseph was in Egypt and until he chose to reveal himself to them, he was hidden from his brother’s view.

His brothers would go through a time of soul searching and arrive at the place of deep conviction for their sin against Joseph. The years would roll on and his brothers would seem to have no thought about what they had done, life went on as usual. But God moved into the situation, and then came seven years of plenty and seven years of famine.

What was going on? Who sent them? The call of hunger and God’s sovereignty brought them guilty to the feet of Joseph.

Genesis 42:21-22, “And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required."

We see the fulfilment of that type on a future day in Zechariah 12:9-11, “In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.”

We see the ultimate restoration at the Lord's return in Zachariah 13:9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

God is not finished with Israel. Today we are seeing the Lord beginning to work with Israel again to ultimately restore them to the place of blessing and preminence among the nations.

Israel has yet to go through the fire of God's chastening hand. But God will keep His promises to His chosen people.

All the Children of Israel Had Light in Their Dwellings - Exodus 10:23

WITHOUT, darkness that might be felt; within, light. This should be the condition of each believing heart. The sun may have gone down, and the moon withdrawn herself in the firmament of the world; the darkness of perplexity and trouble may envelop Pharaoh and all his chosen counsellors; all things may wear the aspect of approaching dissolution: but with the Lord as our everlasting Light we walk in the light of life.

Light is purity. - The soul which is exposed to the indwelling of God, purifies itself even as He is pure; and walks as Jesus did, with white and stainless robes. He that says he has fellowship with the Holy God, and walks in the darkness of his own lusts, lies. Where God is really hidden in the heart, the beams of His lovely purity must irradiate and beautify the life.

Light is knowledge. - There is a wisdom, an insight, an understanding of the Divine mysteries, which the mere intellect could never give, but are the product of the Divine indwelling in the holy soul. All around men may be groping aimlessly after truth, trying to discover the secret of the Universe, whilst to the loving, childlike soul, in which God has taken up His abode, these things, which are hidden from the wise and prudent, are unveiled.

Light is love. - It steals so gently over the world, blessing flowers and birds, little children and invalids. Everywhere it is the symbol of the beneficent work of its Creator. His eldest daughter! Thus amid the selfishness of the world, let Jesus dwell deep in thee, that thou mayest be rooted and grounded in the love of God, which shall illumine thy dwelling, and ray out to the world.
