"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost" - Titus 3:5

God's sovereignty enables Him to deal in grace with erring mortals, apart altogether from any ability on their part to earn or deserve His loving favor. But our poor, legal hearts respond very feebly to His goodness and lovingkindness. It is difficult for us to abide in a sense of grace. We would far rather put God in our debt (Rom. 4:4) than take Him at His word and receive His gifts in simple faith. When we do come to Him in faith we are regenerated and God the Spirit takes His abode in us. - H. A. Ironside

Lord we are Thine: bought by thy blood. Once the poor guilty slaves of sin, But thou redeemed us to God,

And mad'st Thy Spirit dwell within: Thou hast our sinful wand'rings borne With love and patience all divine;

As brands, then, from the burning torn, We own that we are wholly Thine. --- J. C. Deck

LIKUD GAINS STRENGTH IN LATEST POLL

by Gil Ronen - A new poll shows Likud with a commanding lead, as the political arena is headed with increasing certainty towards elections. The Haaretz-Dialogue poll asked voters which party they would vote for if elections were held today. It shows Likud with 35 Knesset seats, compared with 29 in an April poll and 12 in the current Knesset. However, pollster Prof. Camille Fuchs noted that the Likud had reached 35 seats in previous polls, and that its relatively low April figure was the result of news reports about Binyamin Netanyahu's less-than-frugal accommodations and entertainment spending on a trip to London during the Second Lebanon War.

The poll shows Labor with 19 potential MKs (the same as in the current Knesset); Kadima with just 13 MKs (compared with 29 in the current Knesset, and down from 15 in April). Avigdor Lieberman's Israel Our Home (Yisrael Beiteinu) would receive 11 MKs, the same as in the current Knesset, and Shas would get 11 MKs, one less than in today's Knesset

MINISTER BARAK: THE DIE HAS BEEN CAST, PREPARE FOR ELECTIONS

by Nissan Ratzlav-Katz - Defense Minister Ehud Barak, as chairman of the Labor party, told his colleagues on Thursday to get ready for elections by the end of this year. In the ruling Kadima party, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni condemned the moral corruption exposed in recent days and said that Kadima should be prepared for any political development.

Minister Barak said Kadima was suffering from "moral paralysis."

Addressing a meeting of the Labor party directorate in Tel Aviv, Minister Barak announced, "The die has been cast, and it is now necessary to prepare for elections." To that end, Barak said that he had already assigned the party's General Secretary, Eitan Cabel, the task of "immediately putting together an election campaign staff for the coming elections."

SEA OF GALILEE DROPPING; BATHERS AND FISH IN DANGER

by Gil Ronen - The Sea of Galilee, known in Hebrew as the Kinneret, is nearing a critically low water level and this is affecting the safety of bathers in the sea as well as its fish population. The water shortage also threatens the fresh water supply to Israel's residents.

The sea's water level is currently reported at about 212.5 m. below sea level. This is just 50 cm. away from the "red line" of -213 m., the level at which the water supply situation is seen as worrying. It is not far away from the "black line," either: the absolute minimum level of -215 m.

REPORT: IRAN ARRESTS SUSPECTED CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY

By Joseph Abrams - Amid a growing crackdown on religious freedom, Iranian police reportedly have been rounding up people they suspect have converted to Christianity.

On May 11, police arrested eight people in the southern city of Shiraz, according to Carl Moeller, president of Open Doors USA, a Christian organization that fights religious persecution.

Converting from Islam is a crime in Iran; converts can face jail and other penalties.

Most of those detained have been released, but at least one of them, 21-year-old Mojtaba Hussein, is still behind bars and is not cooperating with his captors, according to Moeller.

“He may not be willing to give up the names of other Muslim converts. He may not be willing to recant his faith himself,” Moeller said.

GERMAN STUDENT TO BE DEPORTED FOR ALLEGED 'MISSIONARY WORK'

A student from Germany is set to be deported Friday, after the Interior Ministry determined that she was doing missionary work.

Barbara Ludwig, 32, who has been living mainly in Israel for the past decade, completed her undergraduate degree in philosophy here, and is now working on her master's degree in religious studies at the Hebrew University

"I was born in Germany, but I found my identity in Israel," Ludwig said.

However, at 6:30 A.M. on April 28, the Immigration Police knocked on her door and took her to Ma'asiyahu Prison in Ramle.

Despite attempts by the Hebrew University's legal department to demand her release so she could finish her studies, the Custody Tribunal at Ma'asiyahu ordered her to leave the country within 30 days.

Interior Ministry spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said Ludwig was being deported because she had not arranged her residency status. However, the head of the Population Administration's central region, Elinor Golan, sent two letters to Ludwig's lawyer stating that Ludwig's repeated requests for residency status had been denied because she was "doing missionary work."

Michael Decker, Ludwig's lawyer, said a hearing held on her case in 2004 in the Interior Ministry was a "humiliating religious interrogation," including asking whether she believed Jesus was the messiah.

Ludwig denied being a missionary, although she admits being in contact with Messianic Jews. "They may have seen me at some meeting of the Messianic Jews," she says. I go around with Jews, with Christians and with Messianics, and I read books about Christianity. So what? That's no a reason to deport me," Ludwig said.

GAY MARRIAGES IN NEW YORK FACE BATTLE, OPPOSITION ARISES AFTER GOVERNOR'S DIRECTIVE TO RECOGNIZE UNIONS

ALBANY, N.Y. - Religious and social conservatives vowed Thursday to fight Gov. David Paterson's directive requiring state agencies to recognize gay marriages performed legally elsewhere, saying it flouts traditional values and is a big step toward legalizing same-sex unions in New York.

"The definition of marriage predates recorded history," said New York State Catholic Conference Executive Director Richard E. Barnes. "No single politician or court or legislature should attempt to redefine the very building block of our society in a way that alters its entire meaning and purpose."

Paterson issued a memo earlier this month saying that gay New Yorkers who marry where it is legal will have the right to share family health care plans, receive tax breaks by filing jointly, enjoy stronger adoption rights and inherit property.

VOTERS TO DECIDE WHETHER UNBORN 'PERSONS'

Nation's 1st statewide initiative seen by some as threat to Roe v. Wade

Colorado voters in November will become the first statewide electorate in the nation to decide whether the unborn should be granted "personhood" under the law, pro-life advocates announced today.

Officials with Colorado for Equal Rights, which is sponsoring the proposed state constitutional amendment, confirmed state officials notified them enough valid signatures had been verified to place the issue on the election ballot.
