GAZA ROCKETS CAN REACH ISRAEL'S 5th LARGEST CITY
By Nissan Ratzlav-Katz - The head of the General Security Services (Shabak), Yuval Diskin, told the cabinet on Sunday that Palestinian Authority terrorists in Gaza are already equipped with missiles capable of hitting the port of Ashdod and Kiryat Gat. According to Diskin, the enemy in Gaza must be defeated immediately if a greater escalation is to be avoided.
SECOND TEMPLE PERIOD QUARRY DISCOVERED
By Shauna Naghi - Dr. Gerald Finkelstein, who is leading a new archaeological dig in Jerusalem, claims to have discovered the very quarry which supplied stones used thousands of years ago to build Jerusalem's Western Wall, also known as the Kotel.
Pottery from the Herodian period through the destruction of the Second Temple was found at the excavation site. These finds, paired with the type of stone, further suggested the quarry's connection to the construction of the supporting walls surrounding the Temple Mount, including the Kotel.
ANALYSIS/ PRICE OF QUIET IN LEBANON IS HEZBOLLAH IN POWER
By Zvi Bar'el - The smiles, handshakes and congratulations that followed the election
of Lebanese President Michel Suleiman yesterday were unable to erase questions
and fears over what Hezbollah has in store for the country, and the region as a
whole. That is because the lovely principle of "no victor, no vanquished," as
the emir of Qatar described the deal reached in Doha that allowed for Suleiman's
election, does not reflect reality.
Lebanon did manage to engage the
emergency brake before spiraling into civil war, and can even look forward to a
period of relative quiet. But the price is liable to be Hezbollah's long-term de
facto control of Lebanon.
PALESTINIANS REJECT ISRAELI OFFER TO HAND OVER 91.5% OF WEST BANK
Palestinian officials close to peace talks said Sunday that
Israel has offered a West Bank withdrawal map that leaves about 8.5 percent of
the territory in Israeli hands, less than a previous plan but still more than
the Palestinians are ready to accept.
Also Sunday, Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas was quoted as telling backers that the negotiations have achieved
no progress since they were restarted last November with a pledge to U.S.
President George W. Bush to try for a full peace treaty by the end of the year
The Palestinian officials said Israel presented its new map three days ago in a negotiating session. The last map Israel offered had 12 percent of the West Bank remaining in Israel. Israel wants to keep West Bank land with its main settlement blocs, offering land inside Israel in exchange.
LETHAL STORMS KILL 8 IN IOWA AND MINNESOTO
AP Photo: Cars damaged by a powerful storm are seen in Parkersburg, IowaBy HENRY C. JACKSON, - DES MOINES, Iowa - Powerful storms packing large hail, heavy rain and tornadoes made for a deadly Memorial Day weekend across the nation's midsection, killing at least seven people in Iowa and a 2-year-old child in Minnesota.
Iowa Homeland Security administrator Dave Miller said seven people were killed Sunday by a tornado in northeast Iowa — five from Parkersburg, a town of about 1,000 some 80 miles northeast of Des Moines — and two from nearby New Hartford. At least 50 injuries were reported.
Witnesses reported parts of Parkersburg — particularly the town's south side — were reduced to rubble, including most of the town's high school and homes. In the Des Moines area, there was heavy rain and lightning Sunday night with wind gusts of 70 mph.
CHURCH TO DEBATE CONVERT MOTION
A traditionalist Anglican has said he will continue with a campaign for the Church of England to work explicitly to convert Muslims to Christianity.
Paul Eddy, a lay member of the General Synod, has come under intense pressure from bishops to withdraw his plan.
But he has secured enough support for his motion to be debated at the next meeting of the Church's ruling body.
The motion calls on the Church to proclaim Christianity as the only route to ultimate salvation.
Mr Eddy, who is training to become a priest, has been denounced by some Muslims, but says the Church can no longer avoid hard questions about its beliefs.
He said he had received angry e-mails and telephone calls from senior figures in the Church denouncing his motion.
No-go areas
Mr Eddy claims to have the backing of at least 124 members of the synod, including the Bishops of Rochester, Carlisle and Chester.
Speaking to the Sunday programme on BBC Radio Four, he said that in an effort to be inclusive and inoffensive, the church had "lost its nerve" and was "not doing what the Bible says".
"Both Christianity and Islam are missionary faiths," he said. "For years, we have sent missionaries throughout the whole world, but when we have the privilege of people of all nations on our doorstep, we have a responsibility as the state church to share the gospel of Jesus Christ."
IRAN'S NUKE PLANS SPARKS RACE - 13 Mideast working on their own agendas
From Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin
LONDON -- Agents with Britain's MI6 intelligence agency who are based in the Middle East have established that 13 countries in the region have drawn up new plans -- or reviewed previous ones -- to build nuclear stations following in the path of Iran's push for an enriched uranium program capable of producing nuclear weapons, according to a report in Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
"It is clear that those countries are motivated by what Tehran is doing to enter into the nuclear weapons club," states an MI6 report.
And the International Institute for Strategic Studies, IISS, confirming MI6's findings, said the other nations "have embarked on their programs in order to give them each the option of building a nuclear bomb in the future."
