Social Credit Score: China Set to Roll Out Orwellian Mass Surveillance Tool
Dec 11th, 2019

Categories: Warning

China is developing a new high-tech system of mass surveillance and coercion aimed suppressing political dissent among its 1.4 billion people, while forcing American and Western businesses to conform to the government’s communist policies if they want to operate there.

The system that critics call an Orwellian national-level control system has been dubbed the Social Credit System (SCS) and was set for launch in the coming year, although recent reports from China now say the rollout could be delayed until 2021.

The massive system has been tested in several major Chinese cities and uses millions of surveillance cameras linked to supercomputers containing massive databases. Face and voice recognition technology then identifies and monitors people with the goal of controlling behaviors that range from dissident political activity to jaywalking, ostensibly as part of a financial credit monitoring system similar to those used in the West.

Vice President Mike Pence called out the program in a recent speech, warning that China’s surveillance state is “growing more expansive and intrusive — often with the help of U.S. technology.”

“By 2020, China’s rulers aim to implement an Orwellian system premised on controlling virtually every facet of human life — the so-called social credit score,” Mr. Pence said. “In the words of that program’s official blueprint, it will ‘allow the trustworthy to roam everywhere under heaven, while making it hard for the discredited to take a single step.’”

Facial recognition tools are widely used now in China bolstered by cameras deployed along streets, on buildings, in train stations, in classrooms and subway lines. With the emergence of next-generation 5G telecommunications technology, the reach of the surveillance networks is only expected to increase.

As part of the stepped-up surveillance, the Chinese government announced this month that all who purchase SIM cards for mobile phones must first produce a facial recognition print.

Influence of Media on Our Morals: the Majority Does not Determine Morality

It's always nice to be able to point to the polls when they support your position. But polling, when done accurately, does nothing more than tell you what other people think. And just because you have the majority on your side doesn't mean you are right.

In fact, when it comes to morality, the majority is often at odds with the Bible, which sets the standard of morality for practicing Christians.

But this should come as no surprise. After all, Jesus famously said, "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few" (Matthew 7:13-14).

As the related saying goes, the road to destruction is broad.

Half of Americans Say Moral Values in the U.S. are Poor

Ironically, a Gallup article from June, 2018 indicated, "Forty-nine percent of Americans say the state of moral values in the U.S. is 'poor' -- the highest percentage in Gallup's trend on this measure since its inception in 2002. Meanwhile, 37% of U.S. adults say moral values are 'only fair,' and 14% say they are 'excellent' or 'good.'"

So, almost half of the country thinks that the moral values of the country are "poor." This leads us to an obvious question: Are we right about our morals being wrong? If so, then why are so many of us immoral?

Gallup reported in May of this year that, "A majority of Americans (63%) continue to say same-sex marriage should be legal, on par with the 64% to 67% Gallup has recorded since 2017."

As recently as 1996, however, only 27% of Americans believed same-sex "marriage" should be legal.

As for same-sex relationships in general (outside of marriage), Gallup reports that in 1987, 57% of Americans said that consenting, adult relationships between gays or lesbians should not be legal. Only 32% said they should be legal. By 2019, those numbers had more than flipped with only 26% saying they should not be 'legal' and 73% saying they should.

The Gallup chart is quite graphic, with the numbers crisscrossing somewhat through 2004 and then becoming an ever-widening gap from roughly 2005.

Opinions Changing on Marriage and Sexual Ethics... Including Polygamy

Are these numbers significant? Absolutely.

Do they point to major social shifts? Obviously, they do.

Are they great news for LGBT activists? Without a doubt.

Do they prove anything when it comes to determining what is moral? No, they do not.

During the time period from 2003 to 2017, support for polygamy in America rose from 7% to 17%, an even more dramatic shift from a statistical point of view. And it's up to 18% in 2019.

Gallup noted that this, "may simply be the result of the broader leftward shift on moral issues Americans have exhibited in recent years. Or, as conservative columnist Ross Douthat notes in his New York Times blog, 'Polygamy is bobbing forward in social liberalism's wake ...'" What does this mean?

"To Douthat that and other social conservatives, warming attitudes toward polygamy is a logical consequence of changing social norms -- that values underpinning social liberalism offer 'no compelling grounds for limiting the number of people who might wish to marry.'"

Gallup also observed that, "It is certainly true that moral perceptions have significantly, fundamentally changed on a number of social issues or behaviors since 2001 -- most notably, gay/lesbian relations, having a baby outside of wedlock, sex between unmarried men and women, and divorce."

The Influence of Media on Our Morals

Interestingly, Gallup also noted that there were social reasons that help to explain some of this larger leftward shift (including the rise in divorce and changes in laws; another obvious reason is that people have friends and family members who identify as gay or lesbian).

In contrast, "there is little reason to believe that Americans are more likely to know or be polygamists now than at any other time in the past. But there is one way Americans may feel more familiar with or sympathetic to polygamy: television."

But of course.

And it is television (and movies, print media and social media) which has helped change public opinion on same-sex relationships as well, along with other moral issues.

A recent article on the Oprah Magazine was titled, "Pete Buttigieg's Husband Chasten Has an Incredible Backstory." But the article's more important point was found in the subtitle: "With a win for Pete, Chasten would become First Gentleman of the United States."

Yes, let's normalize this concept too: The First [Gay] Gentleman! Let's get used to this new concept -- an utterly wrong and immoral concept -- using Pete and Chasten as our lovable role models. It's the new normal!

Remember: We're not talking about a female president and her husband, who would become the "First Gentleman of the United States." We're talking a male president with a male spouse who would be the "First Gentleman of the United States." That's quite a different story.

Yet it's a story that many Americans might soon be at home with, which proves that the majority does not determine morality. Morality must be determined on wholly other grounds and argued for holistically.

THIS is what we all say. We think more of the words than of the message; more of our eloquence or slowness of speech than of the King's seal and signature. Moses had learned many wholesome lessons through his long sojourn in Midian; but he had to learn this last one, that God does not want excellency of speech or of language in His messengers, but the unction and power which come on those who speak after direct audience with the Eternal. Aaron, who came to meet Moses, could speak well; but he was a weak man, whose alliance with Moses caused his nobler younger brother much anxiety and pain. However, God determined to send Aaron with him, to be his colleague and spokesman. Better a thousand times had it been for Moses to trust God for speech, than be thus deposed of his premiership.

Be sure to gel thy message from the King. - Wait before Him in the inner shrine, till He says the word which thou shalt speak. This will give thee the real eloquence of the heart.

Look up for the right words. - The Apostle said that the Corinthians were enriched in all utterance; and he said that he spoke the Divine mysteries in words which the Holy Spirit taught. Ask for these, and you will not be disappointed.

Rely on the Divine cooperation. - There is another force at work, more subtle and penetrating than the most eloquent words of man - the power of the Holy Ghost. Seek for His Divine demonstration and co-witness. And it shall come to pass, that mysterious influences shall move over the hearts of those that listen to thy words, which shall attest the mighty fellowship and cooperation of One whom the natural man cannot detect.

Don't Let Bernie Sanders Get Away With Redefining 'pro - Israel'

Linda Sarsour did it again. The Palestinian-American BDS activist/anti-Trump "resistance" activist spoke at a conference of American Muslims for Palestine and let loose with another rhetorical missile at the Jews. In a speech aimed at arguing that pro-Israel Jews could not also be accepted in progressive circles, she said the following:

"How can you be against white supremacy in America and the idea of being in a state based on race and class, but then you support a state like Israel that is based on supremacy, that is built on the idea that Jews are supreme to everyone else?"

She later attempted to clarify that remark to say that she didn't mean to say that all Jews thought they were superior to others. Rather, she said she meant it as a critique of the "racist" nation-state law passed by Israel in 2017, which merely reaffirmed the fact that Israel's mission is to serve as the national home of the Jews.

So instead of walking back the insult, she actually doubled down on the notion that support for Zionism -- the national liberation movement of the Jewish people -- is racism. Such anti-Zionist invective is inherently antisemitic since Sarsour and others who voice such sentiments are seeking to deny rights to Jews that are not denied to others.

That she made this statement at a conclave where attendees heard about plans to redouble efforts to isolate and stigmatize Jews and supporters of Israel on college campuses only made it worse. The fact that Sarsour is a vicious antisemite is not news.

Indeed, it is possible that far too much attention is paid to someone who is, for all of her noisy advocacy against both Trump and Israel, not a person of any great significance. But what makes her latest outrage newsworthy is that the presidential candidate for whom she serves as a surrogate -- Senator Bernie Sanders -- had absolutely nothing to say about any of it.

For many supporters of Israel, that's not surprising, since they dismiss the Vermont Socialist as an equally bitter foe of the Jewish state, if not an antisemite himself. But while Sanders is so critical of Israel and so supportive of the Palestinians that it is easy to mistake him for an enemy of Zionism, that is not, strictly speaking, an accurate characterization of his position.

As he made clear in a recent op-ed in the left-wing magazine Jewish Currents, he supports the existence of Israel and takes pride in it. Nor is this the first time he has said so publicly. It's also true that saying such things is not popular among the leftists who support him. Indeed, Sarsour has said it is one issue on which she disagrees with Sanders.

There was much that was wrong with Sanders' essay, especially his blind spot with respect to antisemitism that emanates from his fellow leftists. But I don't doubt that Sanders believes himself to be supportive of Israel. Nor do I disagree with his assertion in his op-ed that criticism of Israel's government is not antisemitic.

Of course, one can -- as most Israelis do -- criticize the policies of any Israeli government. The real problem is that he is attempting to effectively redefine the term "pro-Israel" in such a manner as to make it possible to claim that someone supports the Jewish state while being neutral about anti-Zionists and the antisemitic rhetoric they spout.

This is a discussion that is more important than Sanders' presidential hopes. It speaks instead to the future of an American Jewish community that prioritizes progressive politics and a social-justice agenda in such a way as to treat Israel as a secondary issue.

The refusal of some on the left to recognize that the intersectional ideology to which many progressives subscribe simply leaves no room for Jews to assert that Jewish rights to self-determination in their ancient homeland is the fatal flaw in the idea of contemporary liberal Zionism.

It is entirely possible to be an ardent friend of the Jewish state and to be as critical of its government and its policies as Sanders has always been. There's no contradiction between Zionism and modern political liberalism.

Sanders refuses to cut ties with people like Sarsour or Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who have engaged in antisemitic incitement as bad as that of Sarsour. He also refuses to repudiate many others in the ranks of his supporters, campaign surrogates, and officials who agree with them about Israel, all of which is incompatible with the idea that he is someone who supports Israel or the struggle against antisemitism in any meaningful sense of those terms.

For too long, many American Jews have been caught up in battles between conservative and liberal Zionists in which American partisan political battles were mixed up with those going on in Israel between right- and left-wing factions.

The real issue facing American Jews heading into the 2020 campaign isn't about settlements or a two-state solution that Congress and most Jews still want, but about which Palestinians have little or no interest. Instead, it's whether the vast majority of American Jews who identify as liberals and Democrats are willing to draw a line in the sand and utterly reject people like Sarsour, Omar, and Tlaib.

The answer coming from Sanders and all too many others is that the common ground they share with such people on Trump and other issues is more important than any residual affection for Israel or even sensitivities about antisemitism. If so, then they are not merely redefining "pro-Israel" in such a way as to render it meaningless, but also fatally undermining the struggle against antisemitism.

To understand the consequences of such a stand, you need only look at Britain, where radical antisemites seized control of the Labour Party. Here on the opposite side of the pond, we can only

tremble for the future of a Jewish community in which Sanders' comfort level with antisemites becomes normative behavior for American Jews.

You might never know their names. But you need to hear their stories. Two more pastors have been killed for their faith in India, yet the work they started continues.

It is very true that persecution is intensifying in India.

But the gospel cannot be stopped.

Not by mob violence. Not by government opposition. Not by intimidation. Not by bloodshed.

In the midst of many deadly challenges, the name of Jesus is being proclaimed.

Let me tell you the story.

I am just now returning from my 27th trip to India, a country I love dearly and a country I visit annually to spend time with dear friends there.

I heard the report about these two martyrs from another pastor who worked with them closely.

Not only so, but I was directly connected to both of them, having laid hands on them and commissioned them some years back. They had graduated from a colleague's ministry school, and I spoke at their graduation ceremony.

And when we prayed over them, we sent them out to share the good news of Jesus with the lost, whatever the cost or consequences.

All of the graduates pledged themselves for the gospel, whether by life or by death.

They did this in the spirit of Paul's words: ". . . it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death" (Philippians 1:20).

These were not just idle words for them. They knew the dangers inherent in their mission. They knew that standing for Jesus might literally cost them their lives, as it has with millions of others worldwide in previous generations.

On my first trip there in 1993, we visited a tribal region whose location I will not mention for security purposes. Suffice it to say it was quite remote, to the point that we were warned not to leave our guest quarters at night because a man-eating tiger was on the loose. (I kid you not.)

It was tribal in every sense of the word, and its many villages had almost no churches.

Over the years, every single village has been reached, as Christian workers trekked over mountains and endured all kinds of hardships to make Jesus known. The light has shined brightly in the darkness, and many thousands of lives have been transformed.

But there have always been militant Hindus who have opposed the work, along with radical communists (known as Naxalites).

And so, over the years, many of the workers have been threatened or beaten, and some have been killed.

But now, under the current government of Prime Minister Modi, hostility against Christians has been rising, to the point that India is now ranked #10 on Open Doors' list of the most dangerous countries for Christians. (This is the first time India has made the top ten.)

In short, Modi's party, the BJP, wants India to be a Hindu nation, and the chief threat to that is Christianity, which sees many Hindus converting every year. And although the BJP is not formally persecuting Christians, its openly hostile stance has stirred up negative sentiments among the populace, and more radical groups, like the RSS, are now running free.

As the Open Doors report states, "Hindu nationalists in India continue to attack Christians with what seems like no consequences."

A report on the With Open Eyes website sheds further light: "Modi has increasingly tied Hinduism to identity as an Indian citizen. The belief that any religion other than Hinduism is foreign to India and must be eradicated is emphasized through the pressures Christian converts face from family and friends to return to the national religion."

As a result of this hostile climate, pastors are being killed, church buildings burned down, and congregants dragged out of services and beaten. And for the most part, the police are simply looking the other way. Christians in the West must not ignore this!

In the case of these two pastors, within the last year, in different villages in this tribal region, they began to build small church buildings for their congregations. (In America, we would hardly consider these structures to be shacks. But in these villages, they take on great importance, especially since most of the people live in tiny hut-type homes.)

In both cases, the villages rose up as a whole to attack these men, and both were killed.

But that is not the end of the story.

Somehow, the construction was completed after their deaths, and their widows are now caring for the Christians who meet there.

As for their children, they are being cared for and educated in the ministry's headquarters in the main city about 5 hours away, where they have a thriving children's home and school. This is necessary, not only because of their husbands' deaths but because of constant health threats and virtually no schools.

As for the killers, not a single thing has been done, and no charges are being brought. After all, the villagers turned on these pastors together, and it was a Christian who was killed. Why would anyone care?

Yet it's not as if India does not know how to punish criminals. As the New York Times reported on December 6, "Extrajudicial killings are common in India. The term for a police killing here is 'encounter' and in recent years the Indian police have killed countless people in such encounters. Many of the killings are later revealed to have been staged or planned."

But there will be no justice in this world for the murderers of these two Christian pastors, both of them young men.

And the truth be told, they would not want to see justice as much as mercy. They would want to see their killers find forgiveness and redemption in Jesus. And it wouldn't surprise me to hear in years to come that some of their persecutors are now part of the church they once tried to destroy.

That is the power of the gospel, and that is why persecution and violence will never quench the flames of Christian love.

Please pray for the persecuted church of India.

You can also write to your elected officials, asking them to urge President Trump to call on Prime Minister Modi to foster an environment of religious freedom.
