Calling it a “threat to the entire world,” the head of the World Health Organization sounded the alarm over the Middle Eastern virus that has so far killed 24 people.

Speaking on Monday in Geneva at the global health monitor’s annual conference, Dr. Margaret Chan did not mince words about the SARS-like novel coronavirus that researchers call MERS.

“Looking at the overall global situation, my greatest concern right now is the novel coronavirus. We understand too little about this virus when viewed against the magnitude of its potential threat. Any new disease that is emerging faster than our understanding is never under control,” Dr Chan said. “These are alarm bells and we must respond. The novel coronavirus is not a problem that any single affected country can keep to itself or manage all by itself. The novel coronavirus is a threat to the entire world.”

One day after Chan’s speech, health officials in France announced the death of a 65-year-old man who had apparently contracted the MERS virus after traveling to Dubai.

So far, the WHO says that more than half of the people who have been diagnosed with MERS have died. The organization said that 24 of 44 confirmed MERS cases have ended in death.

The building of this center takes Turkey's "outreach" in America out of the realm of the subtle.

TurkishMosqueMarylandIP

The government of Turkey is building a 15-acre, $100 million mega-mosque in Lanham, Maryland. Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdogan visited the site on May 15 as part of his official visit to the U.S.. The state of Maryland was officially represented at the event by its Secretary of State John McDonough.

The event was also attended by the leaders of two U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entities.

The mega-mosque is called the Turkish American Culture and Civilization Center and, according to the Muslim Link,  it “will likely become the largest and most striking examples of Islamic architecture in the western hemisphere” when it is finished in 2014. The Muslim Link explicitly says it is “a project of the government of Turkey.”

On May 15, Prime Minister Erdogan spoke to hundreds of people at the construction site and said he’d come back for the opening ceremony next year. He warned the audience that there are groups promoting “Islamophobia,” branding potential critics as paranoid bigots. Erdogan recently said that “Islamophobia” and Zionism are equivalent to fascism and anti-Semitism, saying they are a “crime against humanity.”

On this trip to the U.S., Erdogan brought the father of one of the Islamists killed while on a Turkish flotilla which was trying to break Israel’s weapons blockade on Gaza. Gaza is controlled by Hamas, which is a designated terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department. Erdogan reportedly wanted to him to meet President Obama. (In the end, the father met with Secretary of State John Kerry.)

Netanyahu: We Anticipate a Deterioration

Israel is gearing up for a deterioration in the regional situation, with a growing number of new threats facing the Jewish state, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday, the AFP news agency reports.

Netanyahu made the comments as he watched an exercise simulating the response to a chemical attack on a residential neighborhood in Jerusalem as part of an annual civil defense drill.

His remarks came after several ministers raised the alarm over the planned delivery of Russian anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad has been waging a bloody two-year war against insurgents bent on overthrowing him.

"These things we are seeing here are meant to protect Israel from an accumulation of new threats. These threats are piling up around us," he said in remarks communicated by his bureau.

Israel, he said, was working with "prudence and great responsibility" but was gearing up for the regional situation to get worse.

"We are anticipating a deterioration," Netanyahu said, without elaborating.

Earlier, public radio said Netanyahu had ordered his cabinet to stay silent on the issue of Russian missile deliveries to Syria a day after two senior ministers criticized Moscow and warned that Israel would not sit quietly if it felt under threat. Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon had on Tuesday warned Israel would "know what to do" if Russia delivered anti-aircraft missiles to Assad.

"The deliveries have not taken place, and I hope they do not. But if, by misfortune, they arrive in Syria, we will know what to do," he told reporters.

Israel has launched several air raids inside Syria this year, targeting convoys transporting weapons to its arch foe Hizbullah in Lebanon.

Intelligence and Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz also confirmed Israel would "react to any threat".

"I hope Damascus understands that. We will react forcefully," he told reporters on Tuesday, describing Russia's planned delivery of the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles as "morally wrong".

Moscow on Tuesday defended its arms shipments to Damascus.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the missiles were a "stabilizing factor" which could act as a deterrent against foreign intervention, as fears grow that the Syrian conflict, which has claimed more than 94,000 lives, could spill over into neighboring countries.

Privacy advocates wary of push to mandate auto 'black boxes'
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is seeking a law that would require automakers to install "black boxes" in every new car and light truck sold starting September 2014. But unbeknownst to their owners, many vehicles already carry event data recorders, or EDRs. The NHTSA estimates that about 96 percent of all 2013 vehicles have the devices. The recorders, typically triggered by a crash or air bag deployment, can produce data generated shortly before and during a crash, including vehicle speed, whether the brake was used and whether the driver's seat belt was buckled. The device records data from a variety of vehicle sensors and typically is attached to the floor.

'Silent' quake gently rocks Wellington
"This is what we call a silent earthquake," Geonet scientist Caroline Little said on Firstline this morning. "Instead of this movement happening in seconds, this will take around a year to move." Normal earthquakes release all their energy when one side of a fault suddenly slips past the other, and can be incredibly destructive – as the people of Christchurch know all too well. But in a silent earthquake the energy is released slowly, and in some cases can be predicted in advance.

TEL AVIV — Israel has launched a major civil defense exercise. Officials said the exercise, dubbed “Steadfast Home Front-1, was meant to simulate a ballistic missile attack on Israel.

The officials said the exercise, part of a multi-year defense plan, also tested interoperability by the military, Defense Ministry, other ministries and local authorities.

“Israel is the most threatened state in the world; it is under missile and rocket threat,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

The exercise, which began on May 26, was the seventh edition of the annual civil defense drill. Officials said the latest exercise, scheduled to
end on May 29, was meant to prepare military and civil authorities for a chemical or nuclear attack.

“This year, the national exercise will focus on preparing the home front for required government, civilian and military response to an unconventional weapons scenario within the home front,” the military said.

During the exercise, sirens sounded in cities throughout Israel. Officials said a key scenario was of a Hizbullah and Syrian ballistic missile strike, including those with CW warheads.

Liberty Counsel said DOJ employees were emailed a brochure called “LGBT Inclusion at Work: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Managers.” The brochure was created as a resource from DOJ Pride, an association of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees of the DOJ.

A Department of Justice spokesperson did not return calls seeking comment. Fox News also reached out to DOJ Pride for comment – but emails were not answered.

Among the directives in the brochure is an order for workers to vocally affirm homosexuality.

“Don’t judge or remain silent,” the brochure read. “Silence will be interpreted as disapproval.”

They were also told to post “DOJ Pride” stickers in their office to indicate “that it is a safe place.”

One gay DOJ employee is quoted in the directive; “Silence seems like disapproval. There’s still an atmosphere of LGBT issues not being appropriate for the workplace (particularly for transgender people), or that people who bring it up are trying to rock the boat.”

Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, said every American should be outraged by the DOJ orders.

Chinese cyber spies have reportedly obtained top-secret information on major weapons systems in the US, including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The Washington Post says a confidential report prepared for the Pentagon reveals the designs for more than two dozen weapons systems were compromised.

They include the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which Australia is buying from the US, the Osprey aircraft, and a new US Navy combat ship, according to the Post.

The Post has also cited the advanced Patriot missile system, the Navy’s Aegis ballistic missile defence system and the Black Hawk helicopter as being among the systems hacked.

It is not clear when the hacking occurred.

The Post says the breaches were part of a broad Chinese campaign of espionage against US defence contractors and government agencies.

If the reports are true, there are serious implications.

The Chinese military would have an advantage against those weapons in the field by being able to work out ways of disrupting, corrupting or diverting them.

Bennett: Israel Belongs to the Jews, Period

The only way to fight anti-Semitism and any racism is “to call a spade a spade” and speak the truth, said Minister Naftali Bennett on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Global Forum for Combating Anti-Semitism, Bennett, who serves Minister of Diaspora Affairs, told attendees, “I’m asking all of you – go out. Don’t relent. Don’t be quiet. Speak up.”

One of the more clever methods of anti-Semitism is to claim that Israel’s sole mission is to be a refuge for Jews after the Holocaust, thereby asserting that the land of Israel isn’t Jewish land, said Bennett.

“Part of the truth is that this land, where we are right now – Jerusalem and Israel – is the land of the Jewish people,” he declared. “It’s so very simple: Israel belongs to the Jews. Period. It’s not a compensation for the Holocaust. Israel is the Jewish State. We have to say that again and again.”

He added, “Friends should absolutely criticize us, which is fine. We’re far from perfect. No one’s perfect, but we’re trying to strengthen the only pillar of democracy in an ocean of radical Islam which is out to wipe out the world. We’re here fighting. It’s not easy, but we’re doing it. We’re doing it and we’re creating start-ups. We’re trying to do good. We don’t always succeed, but we try.”

“We’re doing our best and we’re going to continue doing our best, but we need you guys to go out and tell people the truth, and the truth is that Israel is the land of the Jews and we’re here to stay, and we’re not going to be silent anymore,” said Bennett.

Torah scroll found in University of Bologna library
This Torah scroll may be more than 850 years old

The University of Bologna in Italy has found what it says may be the oldest complete scroll of Judaism's most important text, the Torah.

The scroll was in the university library but had been mislabelled, a professor at the university says.

It was previously thought the scroll was no more that a few hundred years old.

However, after carbon dating tests, the university has said the text may have been written more than 850 years ago.

The university's Professor of Hebrew Mauro Perani says this would make it the oldest complete text of the Torah known to exist, and an object of extraordinary worth.

The university says that in 1889 one of its librarians, Leonello Modona, had examined the scroll and dated it to the 17th Century.

However, when Prof Perani recently re-examined the scroll, he realised the script used was that of the oriental Babylonian tradition, meaning that the scroll must be extremely old.

Another reason for the dating is that the text has many features forbidden in later copies under rules laid down by the scholar Maimonides in the 12th Century, the university says.
