Rampage Hits 'untouchables' Again in India

A marriage was the spark that sent angry mobs of caste Hindus out into three areas of Tamil Nadu, India. Gospel for Asia reports that almost 300 homes were destroyed by a mob, incited by the marriage of a caste Hindu girl to a Dalit boy.

Upon learning of the marriage, the girl's father committed suicide, and mobs took fierce revenge on unsuspecting families in not only the boy's colony, but two adjoining colonies as well.

An estimated 1,500 homeless Dalits spent the night in fear without shelter before being housed in government schools.

[The] founder and president of GFA, says the plight of the Dalits--India's "untouchables"--is growing more critical daily.

"Christians everywhere are called to urgent prayer for these oppressed people who are crying out to God for hope," said Yohannan. "Only Jesus Christ can offer the ultimate hope and freedom these abused people seek."

This story was actually broken by a major Indian newspaper, "The Hindu." Few of these stories ever make the papers, indicative of the silent suffering of the Dalits who almost never receives public attention.

This kind of violence inflicted by the upper castes is not an isolated incident...The Dalits are considered subhuman, less valuable than farm animals and therefore not even part of the lowest of the caste system. They are segregated, treated as slaves, and mercilessly abused. In many places, they are denied access to safe water, education, and choice of faith and occupation. In their suffering, they are opening their hearts and seeking hope.

It's Khaled El-Masri's first major judicial victory after trying in the U.S. and Europe to get authorities to recognize him as a victim. Israel to Withhold PA Funds Till March

Israel will withhold funds collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority until at least March, according to Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Speaking to Yisrael Beyteynu activists in Tel Aviv on Tuesday night, Lieberman warned that the transfer of monies to the PA might not take place even in March, adding that the entity owed Israel NIS 1.6 billion.

"The Palestinians can forget about getting even one cent in the coming four months, and in four months' time we will decide how to proceed,” Lieberman said.

The transfer of monies that was due this week has not taken place.

Instead, the Cabinet decided at a meeting last week to use those funds to offset the $200 million debt owed to the Israel Electric Company by the PA for its use of Israel's electricity grid.

In addition, the PA also owes money to the Israel Water Authority.

"Israel is not prepared to accept unilateral steps by the Palestinian side, and anyone who thinks they will achieve concessions and gains this way is wrong,” Lieberman said.

The European Union criticized Israel on Monday for the move, saying “Contractual obligations... regarding full, timely, predictable and transparent transfer of tax and custom revenues have to be respected.”

However, the majority of EU nations voted to approve de facto recognition of the PA as a sovereign nation at the United Nations General Assembly last month when a resolution passed to grant the entity status as a nonmember observer state -- a blatant violation of the PA's contractual obligation under the internationally-recognized Oslo Accords to reach a final status agreement with Israel through direct negotiations.

Only seven nations – including Israel, Canada, the Czech Republic and the United States – opposed the resolution.

Cameron to Support Plans for Eurozone Super - State

David Cameron is preparing to back the first detailed roadmap to a European “super-state” with centralised powers over tax and public spending.

The Prime Minister will travel to Brussels for a summit with European leaders on Thursday to discuss a proposed two-year timetable to a political union in which countries lose the right to set their own budgets.

But he has postponed a landmark speech setting out how he will give voters a say over the future of Britain’s relationship with the EU until next year.

Mr Cameron was said to have been considering announcing his policy on a possible referendum next week.

Last week, Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London and a potential leadership rival to the Prime Minister, warned that the coalition’s policies of encouraging ever closer economic links between eurozone countries was “morally wrong”.

Mr Johnson demanded that the Prime Minister call a referendum on whether Britain should remain part of a new “pared down” European Union focused on trade through the single market.

However, the Prime Minister is understood to be prepared to defy Mr Johnson and indicate that he will not obstruct moves towards political and economic union among the 17 countries in the euro.

Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, who will chair the EU summit, will table the plan for “complete economic and monetary union”.

Over the next 12 months, the plan would see eurozone banks become regulated by the European Central Bank, rather than financial watchdogs in individual countries.

After 2014, the roadmap would culminate in the establishment of a eurozone budget and “enhanced coordination” of tax and employment policies across the 17 member states in the single currency.

EU officials now believe that a new Treaty to establish the new framework is “inevitable”.

However, eurosceptics, including Mr Johnson, are likely to object to the plans which will see eurozone countries surrendering economic sovereignty to the EU.

The masterplan is also likely to trigger a fierce debate in Britain over a referendum on the UK’s continuing membership of the EU in the last half of 2014, months before a general election in the summer of 2015. The coalition has promised to hold a referendum if a new EU Treaty cedes further power from the UK to Brussels.

Other European proposals include plans for a new banking regulator for the 17 countries in the eurozone.

Mr Cameron understood to be determined to ensure that any new rules do not undermine the operation of the European single market, which benefits the British economy.

Mr Van Rompuy said: “The main purpose of this meeting will be for us to discuss a specific and timebound roadmap for the completion of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

“It is indeed crucial that, in order to boost confidence in the long term viability of the EMU, we set out the milestones that will ensure we close the gaps in the EMU architecture which were revealed by the crisis.”
