Signs of an approaching full-scale war increased Friday afternoon, Nov. 16. The IDF obtained government approval to call up reserves in addition to the 30,000 already approved. Hospitals across the country were placed on emergency footing and patients not needing urgent treatment were sent home. The security cabinet meets urgently after 550 Palestinian rockets fired in three days. Jerusalem and Tel Aviv were targeted Friday by Hamas which reported firing two “homemade M-75” missiles each at Israel’s capital and commercial hub. There were no casualties in either town.
The Jerusalem siren was heard in outlying towns Mevaseret Zion, Motza Ilit, Beitar Ilit, Kibbutz Maaleh Hahamisha, Ora and Har Adar.

Israeli ground forces continue to stand by on the Gaza border awaiting government orders to go in.
debkafile reported earflier Friday: As Hamas government officials greeted Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil on his arrival for a short visit to the Gaza Strip, Friday morning, Nov. 16, Palestinian rocket crews stepped up their barrage against Israel. After Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu acceded to Cairo’s request to suspend military action for the visit, air strikes were resumed over northern Gaza to counter Palestinians fire across the South: Dozens of rockets exploded in Beersheba, Ashdod, Hof Ashkelon, Ashkelon, Shear Hanegev, Ofakim, Sderot, Eshkol and Kiryat Malachi. There were several panic victims and direct hits to houses.

Thursday night, long-range Fajr rockets exploded in Greater Tel Aviv region, Israel’s urban and commercial heartland (3 million population) – two landing near Bat Yam or the sea and one or two between Rishon Lezion and Palmachim.

IDF armored, artillery and mechanized infantry units continued to stream to the Gaza border Thursday and Friday, gathering at jumping-off positions for crossing into the enclave in the next stage of the operation. Reservists are reporting for duty on the orders the defense minister issued for 30,000 call-ups. They are reporting at schools in various towns which were converted to registration stations.
Schools in the heavily battered south remain closed indefinitely and all locations within 40 kilometers stay on emergency footing for rocket attacks.

The IDF is rushing forward the completion of the fifth Iron Dome battery after the first four stopped some 150 incoming rockets in the last 48 hours.

debkafile: Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz and the high IDF command are pushing for the ground operation, Stage B of the Pillar of Cloud operation, to start without delay. The prime minister and defense minister prefer to wait.

Thursday night, as the operation wound up its second day, the Israeli Air Force intensified its action, conducting 250 strikes across the territory, supported from the Mediterranean by the Israeli Navy. They targeted rocket-launching positions, stores, silos, arms and ordnance dumps and the eight tunnels snaking under the border fence for use in terrorist attacks and exploding booby-traps. A generator was hit near the residence of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

Our sources report that Thursday, some international airlines cancelled flights to Israel. International airline officials told debkafile that security in central Israel is uncertain after Palestinian rockets from Gaza reached the Tel Aviv area. They fear Ben Gurion international airport at Lod may be next.

The sources noted that the landing of a rocket in the sea off Bat Yam posed a serious aviation hazard because it occurred under the flight path of passenger planes bound for and departing Israel. Intense Israeli Air Force activity over Gaza was making commercial flights additionally “hazardous if not impossible,” they said.
Air France was the first to reschedule flights and advise passengers to call in before setting out for their airport of departure.
Also on Thursday, the US embassy in Tel Aviv advised its nationals and staff to avoid non-essential travel to southern Israel and the children of staff to stay home from their schools in the Tel Aviv area.
A skeleton staff would operate the embassy with most of the diplomats and personnel taking the day off and staying home for their own safety, in case Yarkon Street where the building is situated were to come under Palestinian rocket fire.

In Greek mythology, the Phoenician princess Europa was abducted and raped by the king of the gods, Zeus.

But her image will from next year replace pictures of windows and doors on euro banknotes as a security and deocrative feature.

"Portraits have long been used in banknotes around the world and research has shown that people tend to remember faces. Is there any better figure than Europa to serve as the new face of the euro?" the chief of the European Central Bank (ECB), Mario Draghi, said on Thursday (8 November) according to Bloomberg.

She will first appear on the €5 note in May, with other notes introduced in ascending order in the next few years.

Europa's face will be shown as a watermark and as a hologram. Until now, euro notes carried pictures of windows and doors in various architectural styles in a symbol of openness designed not to offend national sensibilities.

More Missiles Hit Tel Aviv As Egypt Threatens Israel

Israel Today - Ryan Jones

At least one missile hit Tel Aviv on Friday afternoon. The missile landed in an open area and did not cause any injuries, but the impact and explosion could be heard and felt across the Greater Tel Aviv area.

On Thursday, Tel Aviv was hit by two missiles from Gaza. It was the first time Israel's coastal metropolis had sustained a direct missile attack since the first Gulf War over 20 years ago, and marks a major escalation in the current conflict.

Earlier on Friday, dozens of missiles fired by Gaza-based terrorists hit cities across southern Israel. At least three people were wounded, and widespread damage was reported.

All this happened as Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil was paying a solidarity visit to Hamas in Gaza. Kandil provided both cover and legitimacy to the Hamas regime, and blamed Israel alone for the ongoing violence.

Kandil claimed to be in Gaza for the sake of restoring calm, but his boss, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi revealed that the real reason behind the visit was to threaten Israel.

Following morning prayers in Cairo, Morsi was quoted by Egyptian newspaper A-Sharq as saying that "Gaza won't be alone this time" and cautioning that Israel will "pay a heavy price if it continues to attack in Gaza."

Israel did continues to strike Hamas installations in Gaza throughout the day. But the missile strikes on Tel Aviv marked a serious escalation for which many in Israel demanded a more serious response.

On Friday morning, Israel's military leadership began the call-up of a first wave of 16,000 reserve soldiers. At the same time, media outlets reported that Israeli armor was massing on the Gaza border.

RED AURORAS
The apparition might be related to rare all-red auroras sometimes seen during intense geomagnetic storms. They occur some 300 to 500 km above Earth's surface and are not yet fully understood. Some researchers believe the red lights are linked to a large influx of low-energy electrons. When such electrons recombine with oxygen ions in the upper atmosphere, red photons are emitted. At present, space weather forecasters cannot predict when this will occur.

New Zealand volcano on verge of eruption: volcanologists
The government's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences ( GNS Science) said the temperature beneath Ruapehu's Crater Lake was about 800 degrees centigrade, but the lake itself was only 20 degrees centigrade, which suggested a vent was partly blocked. That could lead to a pressure build-up beneath the Crater Lake, indicating a heightened likelihood of eruptions over the coming weeks to months.

Red Flag Over the Atlantic
Terceira...has one big attraction for Beijing: Air Base No. 4. Better known as Lajes Field, the facility where Premier Wen’s 747 landed in June is jointly operated by the U.S. Air Force and its Portuguese counterpart. If China controlled the base, the Atlantic would no longer be secure....Chinese planes could patrol the northern and central portions of the Atlantic and thereby cut air and sea traffic between the U.S. and Europe. Beijing would also be able to deny access to the nearby Mediterranean Sea.

Growing concerns over 'in the air' transmission of Ebola
Canadian scientists have shown that the deadliest form of the ebola virus could be transmitted by air between species. In experiments, they demonstrated that the virus was transmitted from pigs to monkeys without any direct contact between them. The researchers say they believe that limited airborne transmission might be contributing to the spread of the disease in some parts of Africa.

Petraeus Scandal Reveals Massive Islamic Infiltration In Obama Administration
Kelley, who is part of the soap opera that the Petraeus scandal spawned, was in charge of hosting parties and social events to push the Islamic agenda of Middle Eastern countries. She was seen by Muslim Mid-East nations, especially Hezbollah-controlled Lebanon, as the “go to” woman to push their agenda on top American generals. IAF Hits 70 Gaza Targets After Rockets Trigger TA Sirens

Israel strikes 320 targets in the Strip since launching Operation Pillar of Defense with assassination of Hamas military chief; 16 Palestinians killed; Gazans fire over 300 rockets into South, killing 3.

The Israeli Air Force struck some 70 targets in the Gaza Strip in one hour's time, the IDF Spokesman's Office said Thursday night. Among the targets, the IDF statement said, were underground medium-range rocket launching pads. The most recent blitz of air strikes brought the total number to some 320.

Palestinians have fired over 300 rockets from Gaza into the South since the IDF launched its operation. Two rockets triggered an air raid siren in Tel Aviv, marking the first time that a real siren was sounded in Tel Aviv since the Gulf War in the early 1990s.

According to Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency, 16 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the operation. At least two children, including an 11-month-old baby were among the casualties.

The IDF shifted infantry brigades and tank columns to the Gaza border, and announced the call-up of 30,000 reservists, as it made preparations for a possible ground incursion into the Gaza Strip.

“The aim of the attacks is to disrupt the ability of the terrorist organizations to fire rockets,” the IDF said. “Terrorist cells involved in firing rockets have also been hit.”

The targets were chosen after intelligence reports on their locations were gathered over recent months.

“The IDF is landing painful blows against Hamas and against terrorist infrastructure,” Defense Minister Ehud Barak said. He said the rocket fire on greater Tel Aviv was “an escalation, and the other side will have to pay a price for this escalation.

Earlier on Thursday, Barak hinted that Operation Pillar of Defense against Gaza-based terrorists could be a lengthy battle.

Addressing the possibility of a ground operation, the defense minister said he had instructed the IDF to prepare for “any type of development, if and when necessary.”

On Wednesday, the IAF struck and killed Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari, marking the start of the operation. One other person was killed in the attack.

Following the assassination, the IAF struck over 20 underground rocket launchers belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The airstrikes targeted long-range rockets in the possession of terror organizations, such as the Fajr-5 and other rockets that are capable of striking Tel Aviv from Gaza. Palestinian sources said that six Gazans were killed in the IDF strikes.

In response to the attacks, Hamas said that "the occupation has opened the gates of hell."

Senior Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq said the assassination will not "break the will of our people, nor weaken our resistance," Al Ahram reported. Al-Rishq made the comments on his Facebook site, adding that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is using the "war crime" to boost his chances of reelection, but that it could "cost him his political future."

Wednesday's violence came after a four-day rocket barrage which began Saturday appeared to have come to an end on Tuesday evening. The hostilities saw over 100 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel and Israeli retaliatory strikes which killed six Palestinians.

Both Israel and Hamas sent signals to each other via Egypt that they would hold their fire unless attacked, after five days of mounting violence.

Greyerz - There is a Tide in the Affairs of Men...

With continued volatility in global markets, today Egon von Greyerz spoke with King World News about the precarious state of the financial world and key markets, including gold and silver. Here is what Greyerz had this to say: “I was talking to you last week about how Japan was a disaster waiting to happen. I was pleased to see John Embry agreeing with me on Japan because John is one of the wisest men I know. So Japan is in a mess, but you don’t have to go far to look at another problem which is China.”

“China has been dealing with over-investment and easy credit for years, and it’s a bubble. There is a bubble in the economy in China, there’s a credit bubble, there’s a property bubble. China is the only economy in the world that is totally built on credit.

Most emerging economies are built on investment out of profit....

“This is not the case with China. Therefore, they have a massive economy based on credit. This makes China’s situation even more dangerous and more vulnerable.

If we look around the rest of the world, Europe is in recession. We have already seen two negative quarters of growth in Europe. Within that, Germany and France are still showing positive growth, but both Germany and France are declining now.

Then we have the problems all over Europe with the strikes and riots. We are seeing strikes and riots in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, France, and even Belgium. This will just be the beginning. Sadly, conditions will just continue to deteriorate.

Moving to the Middle-East, it’s a time bomb. Israel is preparing to move troops into Gaza because rockets are being fired into Israel. So the Middle-East is a powder keg waiting to explode, and we may be seeing the beginning of that explosion right now. The hungry people, combined with the economic conditions, and the political conditions, will lead to many more revolts, smaller wars, and possibly bigger wars in the Middle-East.

Conditions are also deteriorating in the United States. We just had the Philly Fed Index out today, which was -10.7 vs +5 last month. We also just had another survey released which predicts general business conditions six months forward to be the worst since the collapse back in 2009.

Manufacturing is also predicted to be the worst since 2009. That means factories are less likely to hire, and more likely to fire people over the next six months. This will increase unemployment in the US going forward. Initial Jobless Claims also spiked to 439,000 today in the US. Retail sales are also falling. So the US is deteriorating like everybody else.

I stated last week that 2013 would be a very difficult year. The statistics I am discussing with you today are just signals of things to come. I think 2013 will be an annus horribilis, and people can expect to see major change. I am not a pessimist by nature, but I am a realist, and right now investors need to be warned about what is coming.
