Blessings in Suffering

“Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.”  Psalm 84:6

“Baca” means place of weeping. “Pools” are equated with blessing. Alexander Maclaren paraphrases this verse, “Who passing through the valley of weeping make it a place of blessing.”

We are often called by our Lord to go through deep sorrows. Our Lord has many varied purposes in His working in our lives. Our sorrows are designed to draw us closer to Him, to teach us faith and trust and patience. It is often in the place of weeping that we gain a right perspective on our lives and upon His love and grace.

In our darkest hours the tears may fall as rain and we wonder why? Even as the rain brings the blessing of a rich harvest, so also our tears can bring a wonderful harvest of blessing in our lives and in the lives of others. As we pass on down to verse 11 we see the sun break through the clouds, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”

God understands your sorrow; he sees the falling tear,

 And whispers, “I am with you, then falter not nor fear”

God understands your heartache; He knows the bitter pain;

O trust Him in the darkness, you cannot trust in vain.

Paul tells us about a very painful trial that came into his life. He tells of a thorn in his flesh, a thorn is a very painful thing. Paul did what the Lord encourages us all to do in such a situation. We are exhorted to come boldly before the throne of grace and make our desires and needs known to God.  Many of us have done that and found God’s deliverance.

But Paul this time found a very different response from the Lord. “For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.”
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
(2 Corinthians 12:8-9)

God had a very special purpose in Paul’s pain, and out of it came the power of God on his life. Remember when the tears come, God has a purpose in them. Wait on Him until He chooses to reveal the purpose.
