The Authority of Scripture‏
Mar 2nd, 2017
Commentary
William Webster
Categories: Exhortation

Jesus clearly taught that Scripture is inspired by God. He regarded it as truth-infallible, inerrant, historically reliable, authoritative for living, and an all-sufficient rule of faith. He could say, for example, when speaking with the Pharisees or Sadducees, "Have you not read what God said?" and then quote from Scripture (Matt. 22:31-32). In Matthew 4:4-10, Jesus repeatedly answers Satan by using the Old Testament as the Word of God, saying, "It is written." He maintained that not one jot or tittle would pass from the law until all was accomplished (Matt. 5:17) and that the Scriptures cannot be broken (John 10:35). In the prayer to his Father on the night before he was crucified, Jesus declared that "Thy word is truth" (John 17:17). He affirmed the historicity of Adam (Matt. 19:4), Cain and Abel (Luke 11:51), Noah (Luke 17:26), Jonah (Matt. 12:40), the creation account (Mark 10:6-9), and the reality of heaven and hell (Mark 9:44-46).

Jesus also used the Word of God as an ultimate standard of authority when he came into conflict with other people. He rebuked men with Scripture; correcting their false concepts, teaching and misinterpretations of Scripture by using scriptural proofs. Matthew 22:23-33, for example, describes how Jesus told the Sadducees that they were greatly mistaken in their denial of the resurrection because they did not know the Scriptures or the power of God. Then he quoted a passage from the book of Genesis as an authoritative declaration from God to correct them. It is highly significant that Christ never appealed to tradition as a standard of authority; instead he used Scripture to correct the errors of tradition.

Palestinians Still Teach Their Children to Hate

On February 23, the Israeli Education Ministry, Jerusalem District Police and Shin Bet security agency closed down a Hamas-operated school in east Jerusalem for teaching a violent, antisemitic and anti-Israeli curriculum.

The question is: How did a terrorist organization manage to infiltrate the Israeli school system?

Israels public education system was created almost 65 years ago, with the passage of the National Education Law, which allowed the Arabs, ultra-Orthodox, religious Zionists and secular Jews to maintain separate school systems.

The result has been a farcical testament to the folly of multiculturalism which only encourages minority groups to isolate themselves, propagate their grievances and promote victimhood.

In the early 1990s, the Oslo Accords mandated that the educational system in east Jerusalem be run by the Palestinian Authority (PA).

As a result, only eight out of approximately 180 schools in East Jerusalem teach the Israeli curriculum and only two of those are public schools.

So what happens when the Palestinians teach their own children?

In 2015, an exhaustive report published by Palestinian Media Watch revealed that the PA Israels ostensible peace partner is teaching its children to hate (and murder) Israelis.

In fact, the PAs official educational system uses virulent antisemitic concepts and materials, making it one of the greatest obstacles to peace.

And Israeli citizens are feeling and dying from the effects. For example, most perpetrators of the knife intifada that engulfed Israel last year were young Palestinians who came from east Jerusalem.

The segregated nature of Jerusalems school system also touches upon the festering issue of sovereignty. If Jerusalem is indeed the undivided capital of Israel, then there cant be separate curricula for Jews and Arabs.

More broadly, Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem should mean that there are no separate laws for Israelis and for non-Israelis, as Israeli President Reuven Rivlin recently said.

Therefore, if the true goal of public schools is to develop well-rounded citizens who can think critically, process information, make good decisions, support themselves and serve the needs of society, what can Israel do to reform its divisive educational system?

One idea is for all schools to feature a morning core curriculum, with separate afternoon classes. Such a system would enable students from minority groups to explore their distinct ideological values and religious teachings, while simultaneously obtaining a valuable and comprehensive education.

Less grandiose, but more realistic, is the Education Ministrys plan to offer extra funding to East Jerusalem schools that switch from the Palestinian to the Israeli curriculum.

Under this initiative, schools that either partially or completely adopt the Israeli educational plan will receive additional resources for things such as counseling, music and art classes, teachers continuing education and more.

Despite the incendiary rhetoric of autocratic and corrupt Palestinian leaders, most Arabs living in Israel quietly understand that the key to obtaining a better life is a better education for their children.

But today, young Arab men and women going to school in east Jerusalem are being brainwashed to take up arms and fulfill the jihadist mandate to destroy Israel, instead of improving their own lives.

If there is ever going to be peace in the region, this must change. And soon.

Why are "giant fountains of lava" suddenly pouring out of some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the entire planet, and why are so many long dormant volcanoes suddenly roaring back to life?

The spectacular eruption of Mt. Etna in Italy is making headlines all over the world, but it is far from alone.

According to Volcano Discovery, 35 major volcanoes either are erupting right now or have just recently erupted, and dozens of others are stirring.

So what is causing this upsurge in volcanic activity?  Is something strange happening inside the Earth?

According to the USGS, magma is "molten rock underground", and lava is molten rock "that breaks through the Earth's surface".

Right now, something is pushing magma up through the crust of the Earth at a number of key spots around the planet.  On the island of Sicily, the "giant fountains of lava" that are coming out of Mt. Etna can be seen 30 kilometers away...

Giant fountains of lava could be seen sprouting from the volcano, located on the isle of Sicily, as far away as Catania, around 30 kilometres away, and the resort town of Taormina.

The Meteorological Observatory in Nunziata said: "You can clearly see the lava fountains, although currently modest, as it escapes from the crater in the southeast."

An orange air alert has been issued, meaning that airspace will remain open but authorities will continue to monitor the situation.

On the other side of the world, a constant stream of molten rock has been springing out of Guatemala's "Volcano of Fire" since February 25th...

Guatemala's Volcano of Fire erupted Saturday (Feb 25), spewing lava and sending up plumes of ash that rained down on nearby communities and could eventually reach the capital, civil protection authorities said.

The Volcan de Fuego, one of the country's three active volcanoes, is located about 45km southwest of the capital Guatemala City. It was the volcano's second eruption this year.

And in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a "firehose of lava" has been pouring out of the Kilauea Volcano since December 31st.

Meanwhile, a number of large volcanoes that have been dormant for a very long time all over the world have started springing back to life.

For instance, the only active volcano in India has suddenly started "spewing lava and ash" after being silent for 150 years...

Barren Islands volcano, India's only active volcano, is reportedly spewing lava and ash after a gap of 150 years. It erupted for about four hours in January, scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) claimed.

The volcano is situated in Barren Islands in the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago. Some unsubstantiated reports even claim that it is South Asia's only active volcano.

Its first recorded eruption dates back to 1787. Since then, the volcano has erupted more than ten times, including the one this year.

At one time scientists would speak of "dead volcanoes", but now we learning that it really isn't safe to speak of any volcano as being completely "dead".

So many of these long dormant volcanoes are roaring back to life, and why this is suddenly happening now is puzzling many of the experts.

And as you have seen, this isn't isolated to just one or two geographic regions.  It literally is happening all over the globe.

Last month, Indonesia's Mount Sinabung in the southern hemisphere erupted seven times in the space of a single day, and meanwhile authorities in the northern hemisphere were warning us that four of Iceland's biggest volcanoes are preparing to erupt.

Indonesia and Iceland are about as far apart as you can get, and yet they are both being affected by this worldwide phenomenon.

Without a doubt, something definitely appears to be causing a significant increase in worldwide seismic activity.

Let's talk about earthquakes for a moment.  A website known as the Big Wobble recently published an article that included two extraordinary maps.

The first map showed the number of major earthquakes from January 1900 to January 1917, and the second map showed the number of major earthquakes from January 2000 to January 2017.

The difference between the two maps was startling to say the least.

It is becoming extremely difficult to deny that something is happening to the crust of our planet, and many are becoming concerned about what we could soon experience if the level of seismic activity continues to rise.

We already talked about Mt. Etna, but a much greater threat in Italy appears to be awakening under the city of Naples.  A massive supervolcano known as "Campi Flegrei" is close to a "critical state", and if it erupts the consequences will be beyond catastrophic.  The following comes from National Geographic...

A long-quiet yet huge supervolcano that lies under 500,000 people in Italy may be waking up and approaching a "critical state," scientists report this week in the journal Nature Communications.

Based on physical measurements and computer modeling, "we propose that magma could be approaching the CDP [critical degassing pressure] at Campi Flegrei, a volcano in the metropolitan area of Naples, one of the most densely inhabited areas in the world, and where accelerating deformation and heating are currently being observed," wrote the scientists--who are led by Giovanni Chiodini of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics in Rome.

If that supervolcano were to fully erupt, millions could die, the skies in the northern hemisphere would be darkened for months and the resulting "volcanic winter" would cause famines all around the globe.

And the same things could be said about the supervolcano that is awakening in North Korea too.

In the United States, we should be watching the volcanoes on the west coast for signs of trouble, and my regular readers know that I am particularly concerned about Mt. Rainier.

Someday Mt. Rainier will erupt, and the horror that this will mean for the Northwest is beyond anything that I could put into words for you right now.

We live at a time when our planet is becoming increasingly unstable, and a major natural disaster could change all of our lives in a single moment.

Just because our lives have been somewhat "normal" for an extended period of time does not mean that they will always be this way, and those that are ignoring the rumblings of our planet do so at their own peril.

France: Deradicalization of Jihadists a Total Fiasco

The French government's flagship program to deradicalize jihadists is a "total failure" and must be "completely reconceptualized," according to the initial conclusions of a parliamentary fact-finding commission on deradicalization.

The preliminary report reveals that the government has nothing to show for the tens of millions of taxpayer euros it has spent over the past several years to combat Islamic radicalization in France, where 238 people have been killed in jihadist attacks since January 2015.

The report implies that deradicalization, either in specialized centers or in prisons, does not work because most Islamic radicals do not want to be deradicalized.

The report, "Deindoctrination, Derecruitment and Reintegration of Jihadists in France and Europe" (Désendoctrinement, désembrigadement et réinsertion des djihadistes en France et en Europe) the title avoids using the word "deradicalization" because it is considered by some to be politically incorrect was presented to the Senate Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs on February 22.

The report is the preliminary version of a comprehensive study currently being conducted by a cross-party task force charged with evaluating the effectiveness of the government's deradicalization efforts. The final report is due in July.

Much of the criticism focuses on a ¬40 million ($42 million) plan to build 13 deradicalization centers known as Centers for Prevention, Integration and Citizenship (Centre de prévention, d'insertion et de citoyenneté, CPIC) one in each of France's metropolitan regions, aimed at deradicalizing would-be jihadists.

The original plan, which was unveiled with great fanfare in May 2016, called for each center to host a maximum of 25 individuals, aged 18 to 30, for periods of ten months. The government said that 3,600 radicalized individuals would enter these deradicalization centers during the next two years.

The government's first and, until now, only deradicalization center, housed in the Château de Pontourny, an isolated 18th-century manor in central France, opened in September 2016.

When Senators Esther Benbassa and Catherine Troendlé, both of whom are leading the task force, visited Pontourny on February 3, they found only one resident at the facility. That individual has since been imprisoned for committing "acts of domestic violence."

After just five months of operation, Pontourny is now empty, even though it employs 27 people, including five psychologists, a psychiatrist and nine educators, at an annual cost of ¬2.5 million ($2.6 million).

Although France is home to an estimated 8,250 hardcore Islamic radicals, only 59 people have inquired about going to Pontourny since its opening. Of those, only 17 submitted applications and just nine arrived. Not a single resident has completed the full ten-month curriculum.

One of the residents was a 24-year-old jihadist named Mustafa S., who was arrested during a counter-terrorism operation near Strasbourg on January 20, 2017.

Police said he has links to one of the authors of the November 2015 jihadist attack on the Bataclan Theater in Paris. Mustafa S. was arrested while on leave from Pontourny: He was allegedly on his way to join the Islamic State in Syria.

Another one of the residents of Pontourny was a 24-year-old pregnant woman named Sabrina C., who lived in the facility from September 19 to December 15. She revealed to a local newspaper that she has never been radicalized but took advantage of Pontourny to escape her "family cocoon" and get some "fresh air":

"At no time did I feel interested in any religion whatsoever. My family is Catholic, non-practicing, we go to church from time to time, but no more. My boyfriend wanted me to wear the headscarf, but I always refused."

Sabrina's mother said the deradicalization facility "was an opportunity for our daughter to attend vocational training, to learn cooking, to be near the animals."

Sabrina added that her stay there was a nightmare: "I wept every night, I did not feel in my place. In Pontourny, they treated me like a criminal." She speculated that the only reason she was allowed into the facility was because the government needed "to make the numbers."

The government has also failed in its efforts to stamp out Islamic radicalization in French prisons. In October 2016, the government reversed a policy to house radicalized prisoners in separate units after an increase in attacks on prison guards.

The original idea was to isolate Islamists to keep them from radicalizing other inmates, but Justice Minister Jean-Jacques Urvoas admitted that by housing them in separate prison wings, the Islamists actually had become more violent because they were emboldened by what he called "the group effect."

The report also denounced the emergence of a "deradicalization industry" in which associations and non-governmental organizations with no experience in deradicalization have been awarded lucrative government contracts.

"Several associations, seeking public funding in times of fiscal shortage, turned to the deradicalization sector without any real experience," according to Senator Benbassa.

Benbassa said that the government's deradicalization program was ill-conceived and rushed for political reasons amid a growing jihadist threat.

"The government was in panic as a result of the jihadist attacks," she said. "It was the panic that guided its actions. Political time was short, it was necessary to reassure the general public."

French-Iranian Sociologist Farhad Khosrokhavar, an expert in radicalization, told France 24 that the government's only option for dealing with hardcore jihadists is to lock them up:

"Some people can be deradicalized, but not everyone. It's impossible with the hardcore jihadists, those who are totally convinced. These types of profiles are very dangerous and represent about 10% to 15% of those who have been radicalized. Prison might be one of the only ways of dealing with these die-hard believers."

In an interview with L'Obs, Benbassa said the government has also failed to address prevention:

"Young candidates for jihadism must be socialized. We must teach them a profession, professionalize them and offer them an individualized follow-up. This involves the help of the family, imams, local police officers, educators, psychologists and business leaders, who can also intervene....

"I also think that our political leaders should adopt a little sobriety and humility when approaching this complex phenomenon. The task is extremely difficult.

'Deradicalizing' someone does not happen in six months. These people, who have not been given an ideal and who have clung to Islamic State's ideology, are not going to get rid of it just like that. There is no 'Open Sesame.'"

Senator Philippe Bas, the head of the Senate committee that commissioned the report, described the government's deradicalization program this way: "It is a total fiasco. Everything must be rethought, everything must be redesigned from scratch."

College Campus Battleground Over Free Speech

College campuses were once a place for the free exchange of ideas and the center for vigorous intellectual debate, but increasingly this is no longer true as liberal intellectuals have tightened their hold on schools across the country.

Increasingly, conservative viewpoints, as well as any that don't align with the left's agenda, are shutout or outright banned under the guise of creating safe zones free from "offensive" viewpoints.

Pro-life students on the UC Davis campus recently sat at a table and asked passing students their opinion with a simple question, "Should abortion be legal?" The opinions provided were "yes", "no" and "it depends".

In this entirely inoffensive act of outreach, the students attempted to connect with their fellow students without any of the usual passion which can charge abortion debates.

What was the response of abortion-supporting students? To form a protest with signs warning approaching students of "graphic images ahead" and offering use of umbrellas to safely escort them past.

When other students caught on to the fact that there were no offensive images, the abortion group responded by forming a line in front of the table and shouting angry vitriol. The tactic?

Drown out rationale debate with loud, offensive language. The conservative students petitioned the university to protect their right to free speech but the university decided to do nothing.

Worse still is when a university uses policy to enforce censorship. In Brandon University, the University Student Union has decided that since the pro-abortion group Brandon University Women's Collective already addresses the issue of abortion, there is no need for any other group to do so.

For this reason, they canceled the official club status of the Brandon University Students for Life Club and banned it from campus.

The university claims that pro-life groups makes some students feel uncomfortable.

It assumes that the comfort of students takes precedence over healthy debate and intellectual freedom.

The university has offered to restore the club's status if its members will only "change their views" to those that are approved by the student union.

The Student Union has generously even offered to help reeducate them on the pro-abortion position if they embrace the killing of unborn babies.

On other campuses, the administration actively blocks students from taking classes taught by conservative professors, such as lecturer Keith Fink.

His popular class  "Communication Studies 167: Sex, Politics, and Race: Free Speech on Campus" used to fill up to the maximum size designated by the university, but he was able to freely admit other students with a common university waiver system for individual class registration.

Now, these permissions are being denied by the administration. A lecture hall that can accommodate 292 students is now holding a class of 200 and the 41 additional students who attempted to register were all blocked from enrolling.

As if such broad and bureaucratic policies of censorship were not enough, universities have begun forming "bias response teams" like the one at Appalachian State University and Ohio State University.

One study recently found 230 such groups that encourage students to report any speech that they deem offensive, no matter if it is protected by the First Amendment or not.

At the University of California San Diego, a university newspaper satirizing "safe spaces" is now being sued by a university legal team for offending those who need to use safe spaces, free of ideas that don't fit their views.

Such "response teams" acting in an official capacity on university campuses have encouraged a climate of fear as they encourage students to report one another.

Opposing views are censored and a sort of "group-think" reminiscent of totalitarian states is enforced.

Step outside that "safe" little box of liberal ideology and you may be labeled too offensive or disruptive for the university.
