After billion-dollar disasters, here’s what the US’ fall weather has in store
In mid-August, a peculiar storm system brought prolific lightning to California with little accompanying rain, sparking dozens of wildfires that have since merged into several massive complexes. The August Complex fire is now the largest fire in California’s record, which goes back to 1932. …the Pacific Northwest and New England (and Hawaii) are the only regions that are likely to see some improvement in drought. Drought is expected to expand in Southern California, across much of Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, as well as in Alabama.

Drought to Expand During Fall 2020
A turn from very wet to very dry conditions in the central U.S. during 2020 is forecast to continue through the end of the year. The official NOAA mid-September outlook calls for no drought easing in affected areas of the Midwest and Plains over the next three months. In fact, the outlook calls for drought to expand from the western Plains eastward to the Delta.

THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has disclosed that some parts of Western and Southern provinces have been affected by Red Locusts. DMMU in collaboration with the ministries of Agriculture and Defence and the International Red Locust Control Organisation for Central and Southern Africa, is working to ensure the affected communities and their crops are protected from the infestation of the red locust.

Most of Utah is now in “extreme” drought
More than four-fifths of Utah is experiencing an extreme drought, the U.S. Drought Monitor reported Thursday. It’s the second week they’ve reported that 83% of the state — essentially the entire state south of the Great Salt Lake — falls within that category at the very least.

San Francisco State University is scheduled to host next Wednesday an online event with Leila Khaled, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terrorist organization that has murdered Americans. Khaled is one of the PFLP’s most notorious members, becoming the first woman to hijack an airplane in 1969 as part of a massive terror operation by the group. She attempted to hijack another plane the following year and has since become one of the Palestinian terror faction’s most popular faces. The penalty for breaching sanctions law is a substantial fine and up to 20 years in prison.

According to the survey, there is a clear lack of knowledge, and many distortions, surrounding the Holocaust for millennials and Gen Z. Nationally, 63 percent of respondents didn’t know that 6 million Jews were killed during the years of World War II and the Holocaust, and 36 percent believed that 2 million Jews or fewer were killed.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Friday at age 87. “Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died this evening surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, D.C., due to complications of metastatic pancreas cancer,” the Court said in a statement to CBS News.

The new images were snapped on August 25, showing the giant planet in all its gassy glory. But what has astronomers particularly excited are the new features that have popped up very recently. In the mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere (upper left of the planet in the image) is a bright smear of white that represents a brand new storm brewing. This plume broke out on August 18 – just a week before this image was taken – and in the weeks since, astronomers say they’ve seen two more appear in the same cloud band.

Psychedelic enthusiasts are being awarded federal tax exemptions on the basis of religious freedom in Canada. Medicane Storm Ianos lashes western Greece
A rare hurricane-like storm is lashing islands in western Greece, bringing torrential rain and power cuts. Storm Ianos is described as a “medicane” (Mediterranean hurricane), a phenomenon that first appeared in Greece in 1995. The cyclone is moving eastwards, so at the weekend the winds – now up to 117km/h (73mph) – are set to hit the Peloponnese, then Athens and Crete.

Syria war: US deploys reinforcements to Syria after Russia clashes
The US has ramped up its military presence in Syria after a number of skirmishes with Russian forces intensified tensions in the country. US officials said six Bradley Fighting Vehicles and about 100 troops were part of the deployment to north-east Syria. Incidents between US and Russian forces that patrol that part of the country have escalated this year.

Two people have been killed and 14 others wounded after a shooting at a house party in the state of New York. Police in the city of Rochester said they arrived to find around 100 people running down the street. “This is truly a tragedy of epic proportions,” acting police chief Mark Simmons told reporters on Saturday.
