Hong Kong protests: Demonstrators defy ban on march
Hong Kong police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds of protesters who defied a police ban and marched through the city. Demonstrators lit fires and attacked the parliament building as thousands joined the march. An event to mark five years since Beijing ruled out fully democratic elections was banned by officials and called off by organisers.

Assam NRC: What next for 1.9 million ‘stateless’ Indians?
India has published the final version of a list which effectively strips about 1.9 million people in the north-eastern state of Assam of their citizenship. The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a list of people who can prove they came to the state by 24 March 1971, the day before neighbouring Bangladesh declared independence from Pakistan. People left off the list will have 120 days to appeal against their exclusion.

Iran tanker row: US blacklists vessel ‘bound for Syria’
The US Treasury has blacklisted an Iranian tanker it says is being used to ship oil to Syria. The Adrian Darya 1, previously known as Grace 1, was detained by British authorities in Gibraltar in July after it was suspected of moving oil to Syria in breach of EU sanctions. It was released earlier this month after Iran gave assurances it would not discharge its cargo in Syria.

Syria war: Russia announces ceasefire in Idlib rebel stronghold
A ceasefire by Syrian government forces will come into force on Saturday morning in the rebel-held province of Idlib, Russia has announced. The unilateral agreement will begin at 06:00 (03:00 GMT), Russia’s defence ministry said. Syrian forces intensified their efforts to recapture Idlib in April.

UN chief Guterres fears eruption of ‘full civil war’ in Liby
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has said he fears Libya will end up in a “full civil war” unless moves are soon made to end the conflict. “Unless action is taken in the near term, it is highly likely that the current conflict will escalate into full civil war,” Guterres said on Thursday in his latest report on the UN Support Mission in Libya.
