At least 514 people were killed in recent days due to the extensive floods in India. According to the local authorities, about 17 million people in 29 different districts have been directly affected by the floods in the eastern part of the country. In addition, thousands have been evacuated from their homes.
Floods are common in the region during this time of year, between the months of July and September. However, local officials are stressing that this year has been the worst in regard to the extent of the floods compared to recent years.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the flooded areas of eastern India last week. During his trip, he announced that a $78 million aid package would be granted to the eastern state of Bihar.
