“Active Volcano Prompts Concern in Central Mountains of Costa Rica”
by Chicago Tribune
November 6th, 2014

French Polynesia: Health officials reported the first cases of locally transmitted chikungunya in Tahiti, as well as on Austral and Palliser islands. Chikungunya symptoms include fever and joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling or rash. The only protection is to avoid mosquito bites.

Costa Rica: The U.S. Embassy advises tourists to use caution while traveling near the Turrialba volcano, in the country's central mountain range, about 15 miles from the city of Turrialba. Because of ongoing volcanic and seismic activity, authorities raised the alert level for the volcano to yellow, the second-highest on a three-level alert system. Access above La Pastora also has been restricted. Some areas, like San Jose, Alajuela and Heredia provinces, have been affected by ash from the eruptions, and there is potential for travel disruptions.

France: Protests in Nantes and Toulouse turned violent Nov. 1 over the death of an environmental activist allegedly killed by police, while actions in Lille, Bordeaux and Avignon remained mostly peaceful. The activist died while demonstrating against the controversial Sivens Dam project in the Tarn region in southwestern France. Because talks about the future of the dam are still underway, there is potential for more protests. Tourists should follow local media for updates and avoid large crowds during demonstrations.

Austria: Tourists in Vienna should be aware of planned protests at the U.S. Embassy. The demonstrations, organized by the Iranian Human Rights Organization, will take place 3 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday in November. Authorities expect the actions to be peaceful, but visitors should be cautious.

China: Travelers visiting Guangdong province, which borders Hong Kong, should be aware that an outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever has been reported in the region. At least 30,000 cases have been logged, though health officials are working to control the outbreak. Dengue can cause fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash and pain in the eyes, joints and muscles, and in acute cases, severe vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, and death. The only protection is avoiding contact with mosquitoes.
