'KASSAM COMMUNITIES' CONTINUE TO GROW by Israel Today May 28 2008

Kassam rockets may be falling on the southern communities in the Negev, but people are still moving into area. In the past year alone, more than 120 families have moved into these “kassam communities” while only few have left the region.
“There are no available rooms on any kibbutz or moshav,” said Haim Yellin, head of Eshkol Regional Council. “There are no rooms on the kibbutzim for the students of Sapir College. People are actually fighting for apartments. Even if people sometimes threaten they will leave, they then stop for a minute, think twice about it and realize that in spite of everything, you can live a very good life here.”
Despite the falling rockets, communities in the south are declaring full occupancy. Students are calling on the government to establish new communities in the region because vacancy is full and people refuse to leave.
“This is my home,” Amit explained, “Even if the security situation here is dangerous, I feel like this is the safest place in the world. My children have learned to live with the kassams.”
