THE RIDER ON THE BLACK HORSE - Revelation 6: 5,6.
A REMINDER! - The first four seal judgments are represented by four riders on four different colored horses. In each case it is the same rider, the antichrist, in four different early tribulation period scenarios.
The FIRST horse was a white horse on which the antichrist came to power saying peace and safety. He conquers the world by deception, by signs and wonders, promising peace.
The SECOND horse was a red horse, representing bloodshed and war. Antichrist's peace initiative gives way quickly to war - war which engulfs the whole world. (1 Thess. 5:3 )
Today, we come to the rider on the THIRD horse, the black horse. Black = Famine, in Lam. 5:10 "Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine" Now, the scenario is a terrible famine that comes upon the whole earth.
Famine is a horrible thing! Famine often goes with and follows war. Men are pre-occupied with fighting, and crops are not sown. Ploughshares are beaten into swords, not literally, but swords occupy the time and attention and ploughs and harvesters sit idle.
In recent days, news items have reminded us that our world sits between a delicate balance of scarcely enough to feed the world and a terrible famine.
I remember as a boy during W.W.11, going to the corner grocery store with ration books for sugar, tea, coffee, butter, etc. they were all strictly limited.
"And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts" verse 6. This is undoubtedly the voice of God Himself. This judgment comes directly from the hand of God!
Notice what He decrees, "a measure of wheat for a penny," A penny in John's day was equal to a day's wage. "A measure of wheat", is equal to a quart, enough to feed one man for one day. As you see, many will go hungry! If the daily wage is $l00.00 per day, a bushel of wheat will be worth $3,000.
He goes on to declare, "Three measures of Barley for a Penny." In John's Day barley was feed for cattle and horses, the quality of food will greatly decline. People will be forced to eat filth in order to try to survive.
"And see thou hurt not the oil and the wine."
The lifestyle of the upper class will be unchanged, even in the midst of disaster some will go on in drunkeness and debauchery without thought of responding to God's judgments.
Notice in verse 5..."And He that sat on him had a pair of balances in His hand." On each different horse, in each different scenario, antichrist has a weapon in his hand. In each case he uses that weapon to dominate the world.
FIRST on the white horse he has a bow with no arrows, He initially conquers the world with a Peace Initiative, promising Peace and Prosperity.
SECOND on the red horse he has a great sword in his hand which the nations give to him. He uses war and anarchy to persuade the nations to put their armies and police forces under his control. How cunning and deceptive he is! The world responds by giving him this Great Sword, the Military Might of the nations.
THIRD, on the black horse, he carries in his hand another weapon, a means to gain further control over the world. This time it is a"set of scales" - scales speak of Trade and Commerce.
As the famine and economic chaos hits the world with disastrous affect, antichrist again, with cunning and great deception appeals to the nations and peoples of the world to give him control over trade and commerce, agriculture and food supplies. He promises to solve the problems. Again, a desperate world responds.
The control over, and manipulation of food supplies, and all trade and commerce is a tremendous tool to control the world. "And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark of the beast---. " That is the ultima the control of all men on the face of the earth. See Rev. 13:16, 17 - Rev. 17:18:
In a short period of time, antichrist has gained total and absolute control over the whole earth.
