UK braced for severe storm and heavy rain
Millions of people in England and Wales have been warned to prepare for heavy rain and hurricane-force winds on Sunday night and Monday. Gusts of up to 80mph (130km/h) are predicted as the storm hits the South West then moves north and eastwards. There are fears of flooding, damage to buildings, trees falling and disruption to power supplies and travel.  

Brazil protests: Sao Paulo bus station attacked
Hundreds of protesters have attacked a bus station in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, setting fire to a bus and destroying cash and ticket machines. Riot police responded with tear gas and at least six people were arrested. Protesters were demanding free public transport. High transport costs triggered protests in Sao Paulo in June that later spread across Brazil.  

United Arabs Emirates to grant Egypt additional $3.9b. in assistance
Egypt signed an agreement for $4.9 billion with the United Arab Emirates on Saturday in which it decided to support the country’s development with an additional $3.9b. in aid after previously agreeing to around $1b. in July. The signing of the agreement took place in the presence of General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces...  

Report: Putin seeking to resume Russia-Egypt military ties amid US vacuum
Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning a possible state visit to Egypt in order to take advantage of frayed ties between Washington and Cairo and possibly gain access to Egypt's Mediterranean ports, The Sunday Times reported. The United States announced October 9 that it had decided to "hold the delivery of certain large-scale military systems and cash assistance...  

Mount Etna eruption lights up Sicilian sky
An eruption by Europe's most active volcano has sent a tower of sparks and fire into the sky around it. The plume of ash rising from Mount Etna can be seen across much of eastern Sicily. Its eruptions are not infrequent, but the last major one occurred in 1992.  

Iran Executes 16 Sunni Insurgents in Retaliation for an Attack
The Iranian authorities executed 16 Sunni insurgents on Saturday, Iranian media reported, in retaliation for an attack a day earlier that killed 14 guards on the volatile southeastern border with Pakistan.

A handful of Saudi women have taken to the streets in their cars on a day of collective protest against the ban on female drivers. Several videos of women driving have been posted online despite official warnings that women who took part risked sanctions.  

Syria Kurdish fighters seize border post from Islamists
Kurdish fighters in north-east Syria have taken control of a border crossing with Iraq from Islamist rebel groups. The Yarubiya border post was captured after three days of clashes with groups linked to al-Qaeda, the fighters said.  

'We've reached the end of antibiotics': Top CDC expert declares that 'miracle drugs' that have saved millions are no match against
A high-ranking official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared in an interview with PBS that the age of antibiotics has come to an end. 'For a long time, there have been newspaper stories and covers of magazines that talked about "The end of antibiotics, question mark?"' said Dr Arjun Srinivasan. 'Well, now I would say you can change the title to "The end of antibiotics, period.”'  

Steinitz to US: Israel’s ‘minimum’ on Iran is no enrichment
Strategic Affairs and Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz told his American counterparts in the Israel-US strategic dialogue that Israel’s “minimum” in any deal with Iran was no uranium enrichment. Steinitz described his meeting Wednesday with a US team led by William Burns, the deputy secretary of state, as long and productive. Such meetings take place about twice a year.  

Japan PM warns China on use of force
Japan is ready to counter China if it resorts to force in the pursuit of its geopolitical interests, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in an interview published Saturday. "I've realized that Japan is expected to exert leadership not just on the economic front, but also in the field of security in the Asia-Pacific," Abe told the Wall Street Journal, speaking after a series of summits this month with regional leaders.
