“Gen. El - Sisi Accuses Washington of Turning Its Back on Egyptians”
by debkafile
August 4th, 2013

“You left the Egyptians. You turned your back on the Egyptians, and they won’t forget that,” an indignant Gen. Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi accused the Obama administration Saturday in his first interview since the overthrow of president Mohamed Morsi last month.  He accused Washington of disregarding the Egyptian popular will and providing insufficient support amid threats of civil war. If the US wants to avoid further bloodshed, it must persuade the Brotherhood to back down from its Cairo sit-ins, he said. “The U.S. administration has a lot of leverage and influence with the Muslim Brotherhood, and I’d really like the U.S. administration to use this leverage with them to resolve the conflict,” El-Sisi said. The bitter tone of the general’s remarks confirms DEBKAfile reporting on the anti-US turn taken by Egypt's military.
