What happens if Cyprus collapses?
What happens if Cyprus' banks collapse? If its government goes broke? If it leaves the euro? The European Union, the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the country's leaders are trying to find a deal to secure a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) loan for Cyprus and stave off a failure of its banking system. The Cypriot parliament has already rejected one deal, which would have taxed all bank deposits in the country. The ECB has now put a ticking timer on this drama by declaring it would cut off emergency support to Cyprus' banks on Monday if no deal is found.

Freezing Britain was last night facing the unprecedented prospect of gas rationing. A combination of bitterly cold weather and pipeline failures has left the energy grid at breaking point. The country has less than 36 hours of gas reserves remaining and one energy expert warned yesterday that if the cold snap continues, rationing is ‘inevitable’.

With US-Russia relationship toxic, Moscow looks to strengthen ties with China
It's probably no coincidence that newly-minted Chinese leader Xi Jinping chose Moscow, where he arrived Friday for a three-day visit, to be his first foreign destination. ...But underlying that is a growing sense that the two countries are being driven together by shifting geopolitical winds, which are alienating each from the West while intensifying the need for more reliable partnerships.
