North Korea vows nuclear attack on US, as UN prepares to vote on sanctions
North Korea on Thursday vowed to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States, amplifying its threatening rhetoric hours ahead of a vote by U.N. diplomats on whether to level new sanctions against Pyongyang for its recent nuclear test. An unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry said the North will exercise its right for "a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors" because Washington is pushing to start a nuclear war against the North.

Rome's mayor claims new pope likely to be enthroned on 17 March
"Three exceptional events are in the offing on 17 March, celebrations to mark the [152nd anniversary of the] unification of Italy, the probable enthronement of a new pontiff and the 19th Rome marathon," Alemanno stated. ''If the new pope is enthroned on that day, the marathon will be postponed until the afternoon," Alemanno told an event in Rome presenting the upcoming race.

The paper said three mega-multinationals now control better than 40 percent of global coffee sales, for example. Eight companies control the supply of cocoa and chocolate. Maryland County Exec. Discovers Secretive Network of 500+ Surveillance Cameras Operated Out of Unmarked Room
A network of hundreds of cameras inside and outside Anne Arundel County public buildings in Maryland, unbeknown to the local authorities and county officials, was shut down earlier this week. Now officials are trying to find out more about the extensive operation. The system of more than 500 cameras, the Baltimore Sun reported, was discovered by County Executive Laura Neuman, who just recently was sworn into the position. The Sun describes the room where the surveillance operation was conducted as small, unmarked and unknown to many until now.

Official of Bank in Italy Is Dead
The spokesman of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, an Italian bank at the center of an inquiry into suspected corruption and fraud, was found dead at the bank’s Siena headquarters, a judicial source told Reuters on Wednesday. The body of the spokesman, David Rossi, was found covered with a sheet, beneath an open window overlooking a courtyard outside the building, a restored 14th century fortress.

Ahmadinejad predicts Chavez will be resurrected with Jesus, Muslim prophet
“I have no doubt he will come again along with all the righteous people and the Prophet Jesus and the only successor of the righteous generation, the perfect human,” Ahmadinejad said in a statement released in Persian on the president's official website Wednesday, the New York Times reported. The "perfect human" refers to the Hidden Imam, who Shiite Muslims believe disappeared in the ninth century but expect to re-emerge.

“Large release” of methane off Los Angeles coast — Unusual concentrations detected by haz-mat crews — Gas may be from shift in tectonic plates
Authorities say a foul odor that spurred calls to fire departments throughout the city on Sunday is possibly the result of the large release of methane in the Santa Monica Bay. Santa Monica Fire said in a department statement that they believe the strong odor was caused by a naturally occurring methane leak below the ocean floor. “This morning there was a large release of natural ocean floor methane released in the Santa Monica Bay,” the statement said. [...] Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, said the odor was noted inland from the Santa Monica Bay.

Tectonic Plates moving Again: Will South America split away from Central America?
One of the expectations of Earth Change researchers is that with the evidence of the folding of the tectonic plates under the Pacific Ocean and the collapsing or subduction of the Western Regions of the Ring of fire in the Far East, that these collapsing plates will eventually pull the Northern Regions of South America to the west into the Pacific Ocean and tear away South America from Central America. 3.4 magnitude earthquake recorded in central Oklahoma
The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 3.4 magnitude earthquake has been recorded near Prague in central Oklahoma. The Lincoln County Office of Emergency Management says there were no injuries or damage reported.

Conclave start seen delayed as Vatican muzzles cardinals

Egypt court suspends April parliamentary elections
A court in Egypt has suspended the parliamentary elections which had been scheduled to begin next month. The Cairo Administrative Court said the electoral law promulgated by President Mohammed Morsi needed to be reviewed by the Supreme Constitutional Court. Mr Morsi said he respected the ruling and that an appeal was unlikely.

Mikhail Gorbachev denounces Putin's 'attack on rights'
Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has denounced laws passed in Russia as an "attack on the rights of citizens". In an interview with the BBC he called on President Vladimir Putin "not to be afraid of his own people". Mr Gorbachev also criticised Mr Putin's inner circle, saying it was full of "thieves and corrupt officials".

Arkansas bans abortion at 12 weeks, earliest in nation
The nation's most restrictive abortion law is set to take effect in Arkansas later this year, after the state's House of Representatives on Wednesday overrode Governor Mike Beebe's veto of legislation mostly banning the procedure after 12 weeks of pregnancy. The Republican-controlled House voted 56-33 to override the veto by Democrat Beebe, which followed the state Senate's override on Tuesday. In Arkansas, lawmakers can override a veto with a simple majority vote.
