The lawsuit alleging negligence by the government said that the Defense Department is avoiding legal and financial responsibility for the killings by referring to the shootings as "workplace violence" rather than as a terrorist attack. The group also is suing the estate of Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical U.S.-born Islamic cleric who the victims say inspired the Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, to carry out the attack. The two men exchanged emails before the shootings.

5.8-magnitude quake reported in Indonesia
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake, 10.4 miles deep, jolted Indonesia's Gorontalo province, north of Sulawesi Island, early Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Baltimore announces city-wide surveillance roll out that records passenger conversations on city buses
The surveillance society continues to grow unabated, as the city of Baltimore becomes the latest governmental entity to trample civil rights in the name of “public safety.” According to the Baltimore Sun, city officials have now authorized the recording of private conversations on public buses “to investigate crimes, accidents and poor customer service.”

Russian Sub Skirts Coast
A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine cruised within 200 miles of the East Coast recently in the latest sign Russia is continuing to flex its naval and aerial power against the United States, defense officials said. The submarine was identified by its NATO designation as a Russian Seirra-2 class submarine believed to be based with Russia’s Northern Fleet.

Greece grinds to halt amid mass austerity strike
The 48-hour strikes have brought most of the country to a standstill, shutting down public transport, schools and air traffic control. Hospitals are also working with skeleton crews. Broadcasts and publications were halted until further notice as journalists joined the nationwide strike.

A 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Santa Monica Bay shortly before 6:40 p.m. Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No damage has been reported. Dispatchers at the Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach police departments said they felt the quake, but had no calls reporting damage.

Nor'easter to Lash Sandy-Ravaged Areas

UN-Arab League envoy: Syria risks becoming failed state
The international envoy for Syria fears the country could turn into a new Somalia unless its crisis is resolved, warning of a scenario in which warlords and militia fill a void left by a collapsed state. In an interview with the London-based al-Hayat newspaper, veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi played down the risk of sectarian and ethnic partition of Syria, but said: "What I am afraid of is worse...the collapse of the state and that Syria turns into a new Somalia."
