'Snakeskin' for soldiers repels chemical attacks
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has created a new material for military uniforms that can automatically repel chemical and biological agents -- and shed contaminated layers like a snakeskin.

Superstorm Sandy breaks records
The hurricane-turned-cyclone can claim several historical titles. Sandy's strength, as indicated by barometric pressure just before landfall, set a record. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm. When hurricane hunter aircraft measured its central pressure at 940 millibars -- 27.76 inches -- Monday afternoon, it was the lowest barometric reading ever recorded for an Atlantic storm to make landfall north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Father Of Slain SEAL To WH: "You Have The Blood Of An American Hero On Your Hands"
...there are people in the White House -- whoever it was that was in that room watching that video of my son dying, their cries for help, their order 'don't help them at all, let them die' --

China 'makes first test flight' of new stealth fighter jet
The J-31, the second stealth plane to be unveiled by China in less than two years, flew for 11 minutes on Wednesday morning, the state-run Global Times reported, citing an eyewitness. Photos posted online by Chinese military enthusiasts appeared to show the black-painted combat plane in mid-flight. Images of the aircraft were first leaked online in September.

US withdraws support for Syria's opposition leadership
The US wants the opposition to rally wider support and resist attempts by extremists to hijack the revolution against the Assad regime. Speaking to reporters in Croatia's capital, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the administration was suggesting names and organisations that should feature prominently in any new rebel leadership that emerges from talks starting next week in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Court May Force Mentally Disabled Nevada Woman to Have Abortion
With obvious public outcries against forced abortions in China and forced sterilizations of mentally handicapped individuals in Nazi Germany, one might assume the United States knows better. However, today, in Nevada, the life of an 11-week-old unborn baby and the future of his or her 32-year-old mother hang in the balance as a judge considers whether or not to order the woman to undergo an abortion and sterilization against her will.

US to hit borrowing ceiling at year-end: Treasury
The United States will hit its statutory borrowing limit near the end of 2012, just as a new Congress gears up to do battle over the country's huge debt burden and fiscal deficits. The country's current debt is around $16.2 trillion, and continued borrowing needs to finance the budget shortfall will send the government past the fixed $16.39 trillion sometime in the final days of the year.

US monitoring Iranian warships' Sudan visit
The United States said Wednesday it was monitoring a visit by two Iranian warships to a Sudanese port this week, but had no details about it. The warships left Port Sudan on the Red Sea earlier, an AFP photographer said, after a visit that coincided with Khartoum's denial that Iran is making weapons in Sudan.

Court OKs warrantless use of hidden surveillance cameras
CNET has learned that U.S. District Judge William Griesbach ruled that it was reasonable for Drug Enforcement Administration agents to enter rural property without permission -- and without a warrant -- to install multiple "covert digital surveillance cameras" in hopes of uncovering evidence that 30 to 40 marijuana plants were being grown.

Greece warned: Revamp or no more bailout
Greece doesn't yet merit more bailout aid, so it must resolve its internal issues and back new cuts and taxes if it wants to avoid default, euro ministers said. "We called on the Greek authorities to solve remaining issues so as to swiftly finalize the negotiations with the troika institutions," eurozone finance ministers said in a statement after a Eurogroup conference call.

Hit by crisis, Greek society in free-fall
To the casual observer, all might appear well in Athens. Traffic still hums by, restaurants and bars are open, people sip iced coffees at sunny sidewalk cafes. But scratch the surface and you find a society in free-fall, ripped apart by the most vicious financial crisis the country has seen in half a century. Vigilantes roam inner city neighborhoods, vowing to "clean up" what they claim the demoralized police have failed to do. Right-wing extremists beat migrants, anarchists beat the right-wing thugs and desperate local residents quietly cheer one side or the other as society grows increasingly polarized.
