The Second Coming

“And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.”

The climactic moment has arrived, this is the event toward which the world has been moving since Adam fell into sin. When Adam fell into sin, all of creation was cursed. Today, 6,000 years later, the world is still waiting for that curse to be lifted.

We read about this situation in Romans 8:22, “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” Pollution, disease, storms, hatred, war, envy, strife, poverty, hunger, pain, cancer, suffering, and death are all a part of the results of the curse of sin that has come upon our world. Romans 8:19 describes the present moment, “For the earnest expectation of the creature (creation) waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.” Man and all of creation longs for the day when the curse will be lifted. The entire physical world, all of the animals and all of mankind are groaning for the curse to be lifted.

Away back 3,000 years ago God promised through Isaiah that someday the curse would be lifted. What a day that will be, no more hospitals. No more jails. No crutches. No hunger. No pain. No grief. No cancer. No more war and strife.

Isaiah 11: 6-9, “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”

When will all this take place? We go back to Romans 8:19 which tells us, “For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.” The key is the, “manifestation of the sons of God.”

Someday the children of God will be revealed for what they really are. Someday we will be changed.

We have been saved from the penalty of sin. In our position we are cleansed and stand holy before God.  In our position all of the riches and blessings of heaven is ours.

We are being saved in the sense that we are being sanctified; we are gradually being changed into the image of Christ in this present life.

But someday we will glorified. We read about that day in 1 John 3:2, “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” The timing of this event is given in the phrase, “when he shall appear,” that is the rapture. Notice the transformation, “We shall be like him,” when we are caught up to heaven at the rapture we will be changed. Paul says in Corinthians, “We shall be changed.”

Our old bodies will be gone and we will have glorified bodies like the body of the Lord Jesus Christ after his resurrection.

Our old sin nature will be gone forever. No more sin of any kind and no more possibility of sinning. What a transformation!

We will be like Christ. We will be fashioned into His image; we will be conformed to his likeness. The world has never seen anything like that. Jesus was the first-fruits when He was raised from the grave, in power and glory, He was the first-fruits of what we will be at His coming.

Understand that Christ did not reveal himself to the world at that time. He will not reveal himself to the world until He returns to the earth in glory at His second coming. Understand also that we will not be revealed to the world in our glorified state at the rapture. We will not be revealed to the world until we return with Him in glory at His second coming. Romans 8:18, “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

At that time the curse will be lifted off the whole of creation. Verse 19 tells us that, “For the earnest expectation of the creature (creation) waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.” Why does the creation wait for that day? Verse 21 tells us, “Because the creature (creation) itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” That is the lifting of the curse from the earth. That is exactly what we are facing in our text verse, the moment has arrived. This tremendous event takes place here in chapter 19.

Christ will come out of heaven in His long promised, long awaited glorious second coming to the earth. Here is a tremendous truth, we will come with Him, what a prospect!

Look at our text verse again, “And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.” We will be riding white horses. I don’t exactly know what kind of horses they will be, I am content to wait and see, but I know it will be a thrilling moment that is beyond our present comprehension. “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Cor. 2:9). I do not know about you, but that draws my heart to the lord, that stirs me to live a life that pleases Him.

Notice our garments, “Clothed in fine linen, white and clean.” We will be presented to the world clothed in the righteousness of Christ. We will share in His glory, what a prospect we have! How dare we be downcast over our present circumstances?

We need to labour and pray that others may join with us in this wonderful prospect that is ours.
