Strong Quake Strikes Vanuatu; No Injuries or Tsunami Threat
Another strong earthquake struck the Pacific nation of Vanuatu on Thursday but there was no tsunami threat and no immediate reports of any damage or injuries. The magnitude-6.9 quake was the third strong earthquake to strike Vanuatu since Sunday, although none have caused problems.  

Earthquake Hits Major Volcano Site
There was a major earthquake on the northern edge of the Bárðarbunga volcanic craters at around midnight last night. The quake measured 4.2 on the Richter scale and is therefore the largest quake to have hit the famous volcano since it stopped erupting in February last year.  

Pakistan, India peace talks 'suspended'
Pakistan's ambassador to India has said the peace process between India and Pakistan is currently suspended. Abdul Basit said no meetings were currently scheduled between the foreign secretaries of the two countries. Diplomatic talks were postponed after an attack on an Indian air base in January which Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based militants.

NGO Monitor on Thursday released a report highly critical of a UN agency deemed so biased in Jerusalem that the Foreign Ministry, according to diplomatic sources, stopped cooperating with it in any meaningful way several years ago. ...According to the NGO Monitor report, the group “regularly presents data in a manipulative way that erases the context of terrorism and distorts law and morality.”  

Turkey says reconciliation deal with Israel set to be finalized
Turkish and Israeli teams made progress towards finalizing an agreement to mend ties between them in talks in London and agreed a deal will be finalized in the next meeting to be convened very soon, the Turkish foreign ministry said on Friday.

U.S. deploys B-52 bombers to Qatar for fight against Islamic State
The U.S. Air Force deployed B-52 bombers to Qatar on Saturday to join the fight against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the first time they have been based in the Middle East since the end of the Gulf War in 1991. U.S. Air Forces Central Command said it last flew the long-range bombers operationally in the region in May 2006 as part of the war in Afghanistan, and during a U.S.-led military exercise in Jordan in May 2015.  

Chinese Researchers Experiment with Making HIV-Proof Embryos
Chinese fertility doctors have tried to make HIV-proof human embryos, but the experiments ended in a bust. The new report is the second time researchers in China revealed that they had a go at making genetically modified human embryos. The controversial experiments are, in effect, feasibility studies of whether it’s possible to make super-people engineered to avoid genetic disorders or resist disease.

Clusters of small earthquakes have been reported recently in a northern area of the Grand Canyon.  

North Korea 'tests long-range missile engine'
North Korea says it has successfully tested an engine designed for an intercontinental ballistic missile. The new type of engine would "guarantee" the ability to launch a nuclear strike on the US mainland, the KCNA news agency said. The test was conducted at the country's long-range missile launch site near its west coast.

Five female suicide bombers killed in Maiduguri
Five female suicide bombers were intercepted on Friday morning in Maiduguri by members of the youth vigilante group, popularly called Civilian JTF in Borno State, North-East Nigeria, Speaking to our correspondent on the incident, the spokesman of the youth vigilante group, Mr. Jubrin Gunda, said the suicide bombers were intercepted at about 5.20am while trying to gain entry into Maiduguri.
