Discussion on Islam, the Islamic State and its threat to Israel and the West, and Arab Tribalism

I had the pleasure of meeting Mordechai a few years ago when we were co-panelists at a conference at Ariel University in Samaria on the topics of Jordan and the security challenges facing Israel on many fronts.

He is an Israeli scholar of Arabic literature and a lecturer at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv. He speaks Arabic fluently.

He is an academic expert on the Israeli Arab population. He served for 25 years in IDF military intelligence, where he specialized in Islamic groups, the political discourse of Arab countries, the Arabic press and mass media, and the Syrian domestic arena.

  • Islam came into the world to replace Judaism and Christianity, not live side-by-side with them.
  • Muslims view Jews as being under the wrath of their god, because they rejected his prophet, Mohammed.
  • Israel has no right to exist as a Jewish state, because Muslims occupied the land in the 7th Century; therefore, the land belongs to the Muslims.
  • If the Temple is rebuilt, and Judaism comes back to life, it would be a direct theological threat to Islam.
  • Muslims hate the United States not only because of its policies (e.g., support for Israel and Arab dictators), but because of what the U.S. represents. They see America as materialistic and permissive. They blame the U.S. for a cultural assault on Islam, since Americans invented TV, the Internet and much of the technology used in the modern world. The U.S. has defeated Muslims in their own homes, exposing their women and children to Western culture.
  • Islam was to unite all the Arab tribes and bring peace, stability and prosperity. It has failed. The U.S. succeeded in shaping a nation out of many diverse groups, while Islam failed. The U.S. is the opposite mirror image of Islam. The U.S. is successful, powerful and largely united. This is why Islamic fundamentalists envy and hate the U.S.
  • Muslims enslaved the black peoples of Africa and still see blacks as slaves. President Obama cannot tell the Muslim what to do because he is black. The same feeling was true for former Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice.

Islamic State

  • The leader of the Islamic State (IS), Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, claims to be the caliph of all Muslims. People around the world have pledged allegiance to him.
  • The IS is what al Qaeda was 14 years ago. It is reviving the state of Mohammed by using his operational code. This includes:
  1. Beheadings and mass killings everyplace it occupies.
  2. Using large forces to overwhelm the defenses of small towns, thus gaining tactical battlefield advantage.
  3. Posting its victories and terrorist acts on social media — a tacit of Mohammed’s, who recorded his battlefield victories in books to spread terror.
  4. Mohammed used camels; IS uses pickup trucks.
  5. Using ancient letters on its black flag to show itself true to original Islam.
  6. Cutting off the hands of thieves.
  7. Selling women of conquered peoples into slavery.
  • Muslims cannot denounce what IS is doing because Mohammed did the same things. To denounce them would be to denounce Islam.
  • IS terrorism has already come to the U.S. (in Okla.). It is an idea in the air spread by the media.
  • We are dying because of the media. All jihadists have to do is blow up a U.S. embassy and the media will cover it for days. It is free marketing for their ideas. In this way, the media encourages terrorism. The freedom of our media is a heavy price to pay.
  • There is a limit to what air power can achieve against IS forces, which are now using motorcycles to evade air strikes. IS will not be defeated unless its fighters are caught, one by one, and put in a place like Guantanamo.
  • IS is woven into the fabric of society. We would need boots on the ground to fight them home-to-home, and we would need to stay for a long time. It is the same situation that Israel faces with Hamas in Gaza.

Arab Tribalism

  • The Iraqi Army failed because it is not loyal to the state but to the tribes. This is the source of failure of the modern Arab state.
  • Arabs view the state as the enemy, because it tries to impose its agenda on them. In their world, loyalty to the tribe is paramount. They think, “Why should I die for the state (something I don’t believe in)?” Because the state is viewed as illegitimate, it can only rely on the loyalty of the clan of its rulers.
  • When society is tribal, the acts of its rulers are tribal. The only legitimate Arab states are the Gulf emirates. These are Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. They are successful not because of their oil but because each state is a single tribe. No one tries to undermine the government, and there is no need for elections.
  • The only real solution in the Middle East is to follow the tribes.
  • Former President George W. Bush should have divided Iraq into separate states by tribe. A homogeneous state is much more important than a big state. It is better to live in a small country that is stable. It was good for Bush to get rid of Saddam Hussein, but useless to resuscitate Iraq. The Iraqis should create as many states as they want. Once there is a stable society, the political arena can begin to function and the economy will improve.
  • Look at Dubai. It has no oil — nothing but sand — so its leaders created a free trade zone, and it became a business hub.
  • Is there an Iraqi people or a Libyan people or a Palestinian people? The solution is to follow the emirate model. Eight Palestinian emirates should be established in the West Bank and Gaza.
