Ebola deaths surge in Sierra Leone and Liberia: WHO
Ebola continues to spread in Sierra Leone, Liberia and to a lesser extent in Guinea, with a combined 44 new cases and 21 deaths between July 6-8, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday. This brought the total in West Africa's first outbreak of the deadly viral disease to 888 cases including 539 deaths since February, the United Nations agency said.  

WHO warns HIV 'exploding' among gay men, urges preventive drugs
"We are seeing exploding epidemics," warned Gottfried Hirnschall, who heads WHO's HIV department. Infection rates are rising again among men who have sex with men -- the group at the epicentre of AIDS pandemic when it first emerged 33 years ago, he told reporters in Geneva.

'Heavy Ukrainian losses' as rebels fire rockets in east
Pro-Russian separatists have fired a big barrage of Grad rockets at Ukrainian troops in the eastern region of Luhansk, killing as many as 30, Ukrainian officials say. Russian Grad rockets are classed as heavy artillery weapons, fired in batches from trucks. Unconfirmed reports put the Ukrainian death toll as high as 30, with dozens more wounded, near Zelenopillya.  

Chinese hackers 'broke into US personnel network'
Chinese hackers broke into a US government network in an attempt to gain personal information on thousands of employees, US media report. First reported by the New York Times, the hackers in March allegedly targeted those applying for high-level security clearance positions. Secretary of State John Kerry called the incident an "attempted intrusion" that was still under investigation.

One rocket was fired from Lebanon on Friday morning on a village in the Upper Galilee. There were no injuries in the attack. Artillery fire was directed at the area from which the rocket was fired, a senior army source said. The rocket was not fired by Hezbollah but by a small radical organization in Lebanon...

Hamas's armed wing has warned...it intends to target Israel's Ben-Gurion Airport with its rockets...Gaza... "In the light of Israel's ... attacks on the residents of Gaza Strip ... Frequent, rumbling tremors beneath the earth may be a common occurrence in California, but Oklahoma has now surpassed the state in the number of earthquakes felt this year-a trend that is surprising geophysicists and raising concern.
