Pakistan church blast kills dozens
A bomb blast outside a church in the Pakistani city of Peshawar has killed at least 60 people and injured more than 100 others, officials say. They say two suicide bombers blew themselves up as people were coming out after Sunday Mass. The victims were said to include women and children.  

'Turkey will likely never join the EU due to members' prejudice'

Report: Israelis join Kenyan effort to rescue hostages from terrorists
Israeli forces have joined Kenyan troops in the effort to save hostages from al-Qaida-linked Somali terrorists at a Nairobi mall where gunmen killed at least 59 people on Saturday, AFP reported on Sunday. "The Israelis have just entered and they are rescuing the hostages and the injured," AFP quoted a security source as saying.  

Russia ready to send observers to Syria
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Russia is ready to send military observers to Syria to ensure security for efforts to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons. But he says Russia is not considering sending a full military contingent. Under a U.S.-Russian plan, Syria is to give up its chemical weapons. Security is one of the plan's major challenges, including how to prevent theft of the weapons.

Islamist militants were holed up with hostages on Sunday at a shopping mall in Nairobi, where at least 59 people have been killed in an attack by the al Shabaab group that opposes Kenya's participation in a peacekeeping mission in neighboring Somalia.

As Japan undergoes a seismic shift in economic policy that promises to end two decades of stagnation, one unsuspecting segment of society may be getting a raw deal: the elderly. More than 60 killed in Iraq funeral bombing
At least 60 people have been killed at a funeral in the mainly Shia Muslim Sadr City district of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. A tent where mourners were gathered was hit by two explosions, one of them a suicide car bomb. A third explosion followed as police, ambulances and firefighters gathered at the scene, according to one report.

Venezuela seizes toilet paper factory to avoid shortage
The Venezuelan government has taken over a toilet paper factory to avoid any scarcity of the product. The National Guard has taken control of the plant, and officers will monitor production and distribution. Earlier this year officials ordered millions of toilet rolls to be imported to counter a chronic shortage.  

Russia says opposes any resolution threatening force against Syria
Russia on Sunday criticized what it said were Western attempts to use a Syrian chemical arms disarmament deal to seek a U.N. resolution threatening force against President Bashar al-Assad's government. Syria has handed over information about its chemical arsenal to a U.N.-backed weapons watchdog, meeting the first deadline of the ambitious U.S.-Russia deal that averted the threat of Western air strikes.
