“Stormy Protests Against Morsi in Alexandria”
by debkafile
November 23rd, 2012

Protesters broke into and torched President Mohamed Morsi’s offices in Alexandria Friday after he issued a decree giving himself sweeping powers. Muslim Brotherhood offices were set on fire in the Suez Canal cities of Suez, Port Said, and Ismailia. In Cairo, demonstrators rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square against the new decree, while Muslim Brotherhood supporters gathered outside the presidential palace in Cairo to support him. Morsi’s new decree also bars Egypt's judiciary from dissolving the upper house of parliament and the 100-member assembly drafting a new constitution introducing strict Sharia law to Egypt. The measure effectively neutralizes the judiciary system in favor of the ruling Muslim Brotherhood.
