“Israeli FM: Peace With Palestinians not Possible”
by Israel Today
December 27th, 2010

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Monday reiterated his belief that concluding a genuine and lasting peace deal with the Palestinian Authority is simply not possible at this point in time, and that Israel should instead aim for a long-term interim understanding.

Speaking to Israel Radio, Lieberman said that making further concessions to the Palestinians was not going to bring Israel any closer to the peace and security it desires. He pointed out that Israel has fully surrendered Gaza and had been willing to make even greater concessions at the 2000 Camp David summit.

Despite all that, explained Lieberman, Israel is actually further from a lasting peace today than when the peace process started more than 15 years ago.

Lieberman made similar remarks on Sunday at an annual meeting of Israeli ambassadors and consul-generals in Jerusalem. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to release a statement reminding everyone that Lieberman’s personal views are not representative of Israel’s official policies.
