"When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?" (Matthew 16:2b-3). Jesus taught that signs from heaven portend things to come and testify to God's intention. Weather watching illustrates this. Jesus Christ's first coming and His great works were signs of God's gracious intention to provide free salvation for sinners through Him.

But God also gives signs of grimmer events approaching. Sometimes the face of the sky is gloomy and heavy. This tells of another intervention by God in the course of world history. A time of great troubling is coming to this world because it has rejected the gentler offering of forgiveness through the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us to watch for the signs of the quickly approaching end. The growing turmoil of world events is a call to be ready. November reminds me of the signs of the times.

November stands alone - its solemn days, its sober sights, Without October's joys, or winter's cheery lights. A chill is in your bones, the early morn and evening gone. The frost turns into ice, which lingers farther on.

At times it rages fierce; a stormy blast, a wintry rush. At times it stands so still; a silent waiting hush, And yet a still small voice, for those who pause with ears to hear: November's sober call - the prophet of the year.

Majestic, even stern; It makes you feel what lies ahead. November tells the wise, "Prepare for winter's dread!" The future holds a storm; The truth is in the greying skies, Of coming wind and ice. And fonder hopes are lies.

The skiff of early snow, that stays like grey hairs here and there, The cold that comes so fast, the blast of winter air. It's coming soon we know. We read his face - intense, austere; November gives us facts - the prophet of the year.
